Brandt Snedeker has withdrawn from The PGA Championship

Brandt Snedeker will miss his fourth straight week with a nagging rib injury. Chris Kirk will take his spot in the field, and the timing of Snedeker’s announcement will prevent DFS sites from adding him to the player pool. Snedeker has a few more weeks to try and get his ribs ready for the end of the year FedEx Cup race. Currently ranked in the 55th position a healthy Snedeker still has a very good shot to make it to East Lake for the Tour Championship.

RotoGrinders Projections are live and Paul Casey ranks as a top play on DraftKings

The RotoGrinders DraftKings players projections have Paul Casey ranked as one the top picks in terms of PT/$K for the year’s final major. Considered to be on of the better ball strikers on tour, Casey has the game needed to play well at Quail Hollow. This 18th ranked player in the world comes into this week having posted two top five or better finishes in his last three events, and Casey is having another solid year on tour, in 19 starts this season he has 13 top 25 finishes. The difference between being a good and great on the PGA tour is measured by wins, and Unfortunately for Casey, there has only been one win in his career. Eager to return to the winner’s circle Casey comes into this week as a great value. At $7,800 on DraftKings you will be hard pressed to find a player that provides the valuable combination of consistency and upside.

Final players added to the DraftKings Millionaire Maker Pool

The 156 man field for the final major of the year has been set. Last week’s Barracuda Championship winner Chris Stroud earned a spot into this year’s PGA Championship. Since WGC Bridgestone Invitational winner Hideki Matsuyama was already exempt into the PGA Championship, PGA Tour veteran Chez Reavie officially became the last man into this week’s field. The 99th playing of the PGA Championship will start on Thursday, and the large majority of hype will be centered around the current Open Champion Jordan Spieth. A win at this year’s PGA Championship would make Spieth the youngest player to win the grand slam of golf. Much like Tiger Woods, Spieth has the ability to create an atmosphere bigger than the game itself. All eyes will be on Spieth this week, and it will be interesting to see how this young superstar handles the pressure. DraftKings pricing is one again very soft, and it will be fairly easy to fit Spieth in a variety of different roster constructions format. The chalk has been on fire of late, and Spieth should come in as one of the more popular plays for the week. A major challenge lies in front of the DFS golf community this week, and that is whether or not to fade Jordan Speith. Fading a hot player such as Spieth is always a risky proposition, but in order to win a top heavy GPP like the millionaire maker, you must be willing to take the chance on going against the popular mindset.

Adam Scott makes a push to play in The FedEx Cup

Scott will need to play well over the next few weeks. The worlds 17th ranked player confirmed Wednesday that he will miss the regular season finale and the first two Playoffs events in order to join wife Marie for the birth of their second child. Currently ranked in the 70th position in the FedEx Cup standings, Scott could use a few good weeks in order to ensure a spot in the tour championship. Missing the first two weeks of the FedEx Cup race will not be an easy task, but as a past champion of this event, Scott likes his chances to play well this week. His one win and four top ten finishes at Firestone Country Club should make Scott one of the stronger course history plays of the week. Accurate long golf shots could be a premium this week, and Scott has always been one of the better ball strikers on tour. Reasonably priced across the industry, Scott should easily fit into a variety of roster constructions.

Rickie Fowler sits at the top of the expert rankings

The RotoGrinders panel of golf experts has Rickie Fowler ranked as a top play for this week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational. As one of the more popular players on tour, Fowler is yet again having an excellent PGA Tour season. Currently ranked in the sixth position in the FedEx Cup standings, Fowler finds himself in a great spot to compete for the season ending prize of ten million dollars. In addition to his one win this season, Fowler has seven top 10 finishes, and he has only finished outside of the top 25 four times. Fowler has played at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational seven times and has four top-ten finishes. Fowler will yet again be one of the more popular plays, but the combination of his skill set and current form justifies his spot on your rosters.

Brendan Steele looks to bounce back from consecutive missed cuts

Steele started off the PGA Tour season on fire. The combination of his early season win and his nine top 25 or better finishes, have Steele in a great spot heading into the season ending FedEx Cup race. Currently ranked as the 16th player in the standings, Steele could fly under the radar this week. Recent game log watchers will see his last two missed cuts as a red flag. This no cut limited field event is a great spot for Steele to have a bounce back week. We are looking for players who can pay off a salary without a top five or better finish, and Steele has the ability to make a ton of birdies. In addition to him being great in terms of DK scoring, Steele has the tools needed to play well at this course. Half of Steele’s PGA Tour starts this season have resulted in a top 20 or better DK finish, and he has more than enough upside to pay off his low DraftKings salary this week.

Francesco Molinari ranks as a top value play on DraftKings

The RotoGrinders DraftKings players projections have Francesco Molinari ranked as one the top picks in terms of PT/$K for this week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational. Molinari is in the middle of having one of his better PGA Tour seasons. Currently ranked in the 41st position in the FedEx Cup standings, Molinari has a chance to make his first deep run in the season ending race. In sixteen starts this season, Molinari has posted 11 top 25 or better finishes. In six previous tries at the WGC Invitational, Molinari has only one finish inside the top 25. At $6,800 Molinari provides more than enough upside to pay off his price, and he provides the salry relief needed to fit a top named player in your roster.

Jason Day continues to trend as a popular fade

The RotoGrinders ownership projections are out, and once again Jason Day appears to have fallen out of favor with the mass public. This number seven ranked player in the world has struggled to play well this season. In 14 events this season Day has only managed two top ten finishes. Day is one of the few players talented enough to win on any given week, and the potential for low ownership makes him an excellent tournament pivot play. Picking Day in a no cut event removes some of the risk, and barring an unfortunate withdrawal the upside he brings to the table makes him a very powerful GPP play. Very rarely will you get the opportunity to own a world class talent at such a low ownership level.

Rory McIlroy parts ways with long time caddie

Rory McIlroy parted ways with longtime caddie J.P. Fitzgerald on Monday, a week after a T-4 finish at Royal Birkdale. This past champion of the WGC Invitational will have long time friend Harry Diamond on the bag for this week’s tournament. While a caddie switch makes for good headlines, the impact of this change should be fairly small. McIlroy comes into this week off one of his better performances of the season. McIlroy has played in the WGC Invitational six times and he has posted 4 top tens including a win. Diamond is reportedly a short term option for McIlroy as a caddie.

With 9 top 25 finishes and one win, this 15th ranked player in the FedEx Cup race appears to be the odds on favorite for comeback player of the year. Stanley’s only appearance in the WGC Bridgestone yielded a top 20 finish. His five top ten finishes in the 2017 season offer enough upside to make Stanley an excellent option for this week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

Brandt Snedeker has withdrawn from the WGC Bridgestone

Injured ribs have forced Brandt Snedeker to withdraw from his third straight event. Currently ranked 51st in the FedEx Cup standings, Snedeker should be considered highly unlikely to compete in next weeks PGA Championship. If Snedeker can remain inside the top 75 in the FedEx Cup race, then he can potentially have another month of time to allow his ribs to heal. The current field for this week’s WGC Bridgestone stands at 76 players.

Martin Kaymer has withdrawn from the next two events

Early this morning Martin Kaymer posted via his official Facebook page that a bad shoulder will keep him out of the next two events. The timing of the injury is very unfortunate for Kaymer. Not only will he miss this week’s WGC, but he will also not make next week’s PGA Championship. Leading into this week, Kaymer had been in solid form. In 10 PGA tour events, this season Kaymer had 5 top 25 or better finishes.

Kevin Roth's official weather report for The RBC Canadian Open

RotoGrinders own chief meteorologist Kevin Roth posted his weather report for this week’s PGA Tour event in the main forum. Roth’s forecast calls for the best chance of rain to occur early in the day on Thursday. The chance of a few afternoon showers on Thursday is a possibility, but the afternoon should be drier than the morning. Friday through Sunday looks to be great weather for golf, so overall it looks like there is not an edge to be gained by stacking one tee time wave over another.

Charlie Beljan is no longer in the field for the RBC Canadian Open

Beljan should not be on the radar of many in the DFS community, but if he happened to be in your lineups please remove him immediately. Beljan is battling a wrist injury and he is not ready to return to competitive golf. Chris Stroud will take his place in this week’s tournament.

Patrick Cantlay gaining steam

The return of Patrick Cantlay to golf is one of the best stories of the year. This former number one ranked amateur golfer turned pro in June of 2012, and seem destined for big things on the PGA Tour. Cantlay’s first full season on tour was cut short by a severe L5 injury to his back. Three months of down town turned into a year, and then a year turned into multiple years. By January 2016, Cantlay thought he’d finally turned the corner. During his preparation to play the PGA Tour’s CareerBuilder Challenge, Cantlay felt discomfort in his back and the pain shot down into his legs. Once again Cantaly was sidelined and this time he was advised to sit out at least another 10 months. During his recovery time, Cantlay was hanging out with his close friend and caddie Chris Roth. The two long time friends spent their last night together some four weeks after Cantlay’s latest setback. During a night on the town, Roth was struck and killed by a hit and run driver. Cantlay was only ten feet from his friend, but there was nothing he could do. Cantlay’s world had hit complete rock bottom. The injuries would soon begin to heal, and Cantley was cleared to play golf. In eight events this season he has earned enough money to keep his PGA tour card, and he comes into this week’s RBC Canadian Open with a ton of fanfare. The RotoGrinders Draftkings ownership projections have Cantlay as one of the highest owned players for the week. While Cantlay has certainly played well this season, there is a strong argument to made for fading him due to lack of playing time. It’s been almost a month and a half since Cantlay last played a competitive round of golf. This young player has proven that he deserves a spot on the PGA Tour, and a good performance this week is certainly not out of the question, but if you are looking to gain an edge in large field GPP’s then this would be a prime spot for a fade.
