Webb Simpson sits at the top of the expert rankings

The RotoGrinders panel of golf experts has Webb Simpson ranked as a top play for this week’s Wyndham Championship. Although he is not a member at Sedgefield Country Club, Simpson is, however, a native of Greensboro North Carolina. In golf, we don’t have home games, but Simpson will have the luxury of sleeping in his own bed this week. In addition to being a past champion of The Wyndham Championship, Simpson has three top ten finishes in his eight tries at Sedgefield Country Club. Currently ranked in the 37th place in the FedEx Cup standings, Simpson comes into this week playing some of his best golf this season. It’s been over three months since he missed a cut, and during his last eight tournaments, Simpson has 4 top 20 or better finishes. The combination of his current form and course history makes Simpson a solid play in any format.

Kevin Streelman projects as a top play on FanDuel

The RotoGrinders FanDuel players projections have Kevin Streelman ranked as one the top picks in terms of PT/$K for this week’s Wyndham Championship. FanDuel pricing allows for a ton of different roster construction formats, and Streelman’s very affordable price makes him a top play in almost any format. This 82nd ranked player in the FedEx Cup standings is in the midst of playing some of his best golf of the season. Streelman has not missed a cut since early May and he has four top 20 or better finishes in his last six events. This two time PGA Tour winner will need a few more good weeks of play if he plans on playing in his third tour championship. Streemlan last played the Wyndham Championship in 2012, but he does have two top ten finishes in his only four visits to Sedgefield Country Club.

Past major champion needs a good week in order to play in the FedEx Cup Playoffs

It’s hard to believe that a player capable of winning a U.S. Open is in the position of needing a good week in order to secure a spot inside the top 125. Graeme McDowell will need a good week to avoid missing the FedEx Cup playoffs for the second time in the last three years. Since winning the U.S. Open McDowell has struggled to display the consistency needed to compete on the best tour in the world. An early win in the 2016 season allowed for McDowell to rebound from a dreadful 2015 season. Currently ranked at the 131st position in the FedEx Cup race, McDowell will need a solid week if he hopes to play his way into the FedEx Cup. The 2017 season has not been an overall bust for McDowell, in 16 events he has 4 top 25 or better finishes and has managed to only miss 5 cuts. Unfortunately for McDowell three of those missed cuts have occurred in his last three events. This crafty tour veteran has a lot to play for this week, and a deflated salary makes Mcdowell a very interesting GPP play. Tragerting players with the motivation of having to perform in order to move on can be a great angle to exploit over the next few weeks. Foreign players typically go undrowned, and McDowell has enough upside to make headway as a low owned tournament flyer. McDowell tied for 5th at last year’s Wyndham Championship.

Kevin Kisner looks to rebound from major disapointment

Kevin Kisner came extremely close to winning one of the more coveted trophies in the game of golf. After being near the lead for the majority of the tournament, Kisner faced the daunting task of having to play nearly perfect golf over the final few holes in order to have a chance at winning Wanamaker trophy. Kisner’s excellent form from last week’s PGA Championship has him trending as one of the more popular plays in this week’s Wyndham Championship. In four previous attempts at this tournament, Kisner has two top ten finishes. The major concern to be had in picking Kisner is how much will last week’s tournament will carry over into this week. Letdowns are never easy in the game of golf, and you would have to think that major championship letdowns are even harder to get over. The combination of him being one of the higher owned players in the field and the possibility of having a major championship hangover makes fading Kisner an interesting GPP strategy for the Wyndham Championship. Kisner is certainly playing some great golf of late, but in order to win a big field GPP, you have to at least consider the option of gaining an edge by fading the public play.

Currently ranked 72 in the FedEx Cup standings, Campbell needs to take advantage of his current good form if he plans to have shot at playing in the Tour Championship later this year. With three top 20 or better finishes in his last four events, Campbell looks to have his game trending in the right direction.Known for his ability to hit quality golf shots, Campbell will need to start making a few putts if he wants to keep his season alive. In nine attempts at the Wyndham Championship, Campbell has two top ten fnishes.

Dominic Bozzelli is no longer in the Wyndham Championship

In a surprising move, PGA Tour rookie Dominic Bozzelli has withdrawn from the Wyndham Championship. This marks the second straight week that Bozzelli has withdrawn from a tournament. Currently ranked in the 112th spot in the FedEx Cup standings, Bozzelli will struggle to maintain his position in the year end race. The reason behind the withdrawal remains a mystery, and we will provide any update as information becomes available. Bozzelli has played in 24 events this year and he has posted a respectable 4 top 25 or better finishes.

A past champion trending in the right direction

As the season comes to and end players look to take advantage of the great opportunity that the FedEx Cup race provides. Ryan Moore used last seasons late run to finish seventh in the FedEx Cup race and earn a spot on the Ryder Cup Team. Moore looks ahead to this week as another opportunity to finish the season strong, currently, in the 67th position in the FedEx Cup standings, this multiple tour winner appears to have recovered from an injury that kept him sidelined for almost a month. With back to back top 30 or better finishes in his last two events, Moore has his game trending in the right direction. As a past Champion of this event, Moore knows what it takes to play well at Sedgefield Country Club and he should be considered a great option for this week’s Wyndham Championship.

There is a lot on the line at the Wyndham Championship

At first glance, The Wyndham Championship appears to be another weak field PGA Tour event. With only 24 of the top 100 and 7 of the top 50 in the official golf rankings, the Wyndham Championship looks like a prime spot for post major championship letdown. With PGA Tour cards on the line, and the FedEx Cup playoff spots left to be secured, this week could prove to have more drama than first expected. The FedEx Cup playoffs are slated to start next week, and The Wyndham Championship serves as the last chance to improve or secure a spot to compete for the ten million dollar first place prize. For a good share of players in the field, this could be the end of the line. Not only is the Wyndham Championship about trying to finish in the top-125 and move onto the FedEx Cup playoffs, but this week is also about PGA Tour card survival. For those that are not in the top-125 of the FedEx Cup point total at weeks end the Web.Com Tour finals await. Those between 126 and 175 will be joined by the top-75 money list finishers on the Web.Com Tour. The top-25 of the Web.Com money list will automatically receive a card. The other 25 cards will go to players who earn the most-cumulative money in the four Web.Com Tour events. Once such player in danger of missing out on the FedEx Cup playoffs is PGA Tour Rookie JT Poston. Currently ranked in the 130th position in the FedEx Cup standings, Poston will need a good week in order to move on into the first week of the season ending race. As a graduate of last season’s Web.Com Tour finals, Poston knows all too well what it takes to retain his tour card. With four top 25 finishes this season, Poston has shown the upside needed to play well on The PGA Tour. The position of needing to play well in order to move on makes for great drama and players like Poston are worth looking at when building GPP lineups.

McIIroy's ownership continues to grow.

In order to win a big GPP, you need to normally look a fading a high owned player. With a strong course history on his side, McIlroy is quickly gaining steam and is in route to being the predicted highest owned player of the week. Back to back top five finishes in his last two events have McIlroy trending the right direction heading into the years final major, and this two time PGA Champion has six wins and two wins in seven attempts at Quail Hollow. Soft roster pricing allows for a wide variety of McIlroy roster combinations. The inflated ownership projection points to the possibility of fading as a leverage play, but McIlroy is in just too good of a spot to ignore. McIlroy has not won yet this season, and a win this week would go a long way in terms of defending his FedEx Cup title.

Kevin Roth's official weather report for The PGA Championship

RotoGrinders own chief meteorologist Kevin Roth posted his weather report for the years final major in the main forum. According to Roth the best chance of rain will occur via scattered thunderstorms. The timing of these thunderstorms looks to favor Friday afternoon, but overall it looks as there is almost no edge to be gained by stacking tee times. If rain does accumulate throughout the week, look for the longer hitters to gain a slight advantage.

Danny Willett changes swing coaches

2016 Masters champion Danny Willett has parted ways with long-time coach Pete Cowen. Mired in a slump since his Masters win Willett looks to revamp his game with Tiger Woods former swing coach Sean Foley. Those close to Willett stress that there has been no fall out with Cowen and that the change is more about Willett needing a fresh set of eyes. Foley, who previously coached Tiger Woods and currently tutors Justin Rose, started working with Willett at this week’s PGA Championship. Foley and Willet were spotted together on the range together Tuesday morning, and then again later that afternoon as Rose and Willett played a practice round. Swing changes are never easy, but some times a player just needs to hear something from a different point of view. While a quick turnaround is not expected, the change in direction for Willett is worth monitoring in the upcoming months.

Webb Simpson gears up for a major at his home course

Home field advantage is an angle that we seldom get to us in DFS golf. Very few PGA Tour courses actually have PGA players as members. Webb Simpson is a member at quite a few different courses in the south, and this week his home course of Quail Hollow plays host to the PGA Championship. Simpsons local knowledge has led to a pair of top 10s at the Wells Fargo Championship, but he also burned a large majority of the DFS Community with a missed cut at Quail Hollow last season. Qual Hollow underwent a renovation prior to hosting this year’s PGA, and as a member of the club, Simpson should have an early edge in how to handle any significant changes to the course. Simpson is a major championship winner but he’s found just one top 20 in majors since his win. The fear of wet weather combined with Simpson’s lack of length could provide a discount in terms of ownership on this former major champion. Regardless of the weather Simpson’s ties to this course make him an excellent value play for the year’s last major.

Fowler looks to shed an unwanted title

Great players are measured by their success in major championship golf. For Fowler, this major represents another chance to remove the less than desirable title of best player without a major championship win. Fowler has played in 31 major championships in his career and has posted at least one top five each major. In fact, the 2014 season saw Fowler post a top five in each of the four majors. His most recent top five came at this year’s U.S. Open, a tournament in which Fowler played near the lead for the entirety of the week. Fowler returns to the course where he claimed his first PGA Tour victory and the media buzz circulating around the chance to make Quail Hollow the site of his first major victory is at an all time high. Fowler ranks as one of the top players in terms ownership for the week, and this very talented player is in a great spot to break through and remove the title of best player with out a major win.

Phil Mickelson enters the week with a very good course history

The PGA rotates courses for its Championship, and this year’s host facility is unique in the fact that it’s a normal stop on the PGA Tour. Quail Hollow has been the regular stop for the Quicken Loans Invitational since 2003. The rotating of courses for a tournament makes it hard to gain an edge by using past course history. This week, however, will provide us the opportunity to use past rounds played at Quail Hollow as a reference point in our tournament preparation. Phil Mickelson has played in the Quicken Loans for the last 13 years and comes into this week with arguably one of the best course histories at Quail Hollow. In addition to having a perfect cut record, Mickelson has 9 top ten or better finishes at Quail Hollow. The only blemish in Mickelson’s history at this course is the lack of a win. A lot of the media coverage this week will focus on Jordan Speith’s chances of winning the career Grand Slam. Mickelson knows what that pressure is like, and as he prepares to play in his 100th major Championship the desire to win still runs strong. Mickelson has not won since the 2013 Open Championship, but his excellent course history makes him a strong play for the 99th PGA Championship.

Charley Hoffman looks to stay hot

The word streaky is often used to describe the golf game of Charlie Hoffman. Known as a player who is not afraid to shoot a low number, Hoffman has been on an absolute tear over the last few months. During that time Hoffman has posted four top ten finishes, three of those finishes were inside the top three, and he has not missed a cut since mid-April. Hoffman has been in contention in every major this season, and his close calls in the last two tournaments should only add to his popularity for his week. Hoffman is projected to be one of the higher picks in terms of PT/$K in both the DraftKings and FanDuel RotoGrinders Player projection tool. With back to back chances to win, Hoffman is in a great spot heading into this week’s PGA. Hoffman will be a very high owned option this week, but the combination of his skill set and the value he offers at this price justifies a spot on your roster.
