Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder are taking their talents to South Beach tonight, as they face the Heat in Miami. The Thunder are only 3-4 on the road this season, but they come into tonight’s contest as 2-point favorites. This should be a pace-down game for Oklahoma City, as the Heat average five less possessions per game than the Thunder this season.

Record: 11-7 — Road: 3-4 — Last 10: 6-4

The Heat continue to improve on the defensive end of the floor. They are an average rebounding team, but they are ranked third or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game this season. The Thunder have an implied team total of 101.3 points tonight. While that may seem high, they have scored an average of 108.9 points per game this season.

Even though the matchup is a difficult one, we can’t rule out Russell Westbrook or Kevin Durant, especially on a night that features only six games. Westbrook has not skipped a beat with Durant back in the lineup, averaging 46.1 fantasy points per game over his last five. He is a strong play at point guard, although Kyle Lowry and Isaiah Thomas are better plays in a fantasy points per dollar sense. Durant is right there with Paul George as the top small forward in tonight’s slate. Durant is considerably cheaper than Westbrook and he has actually outproduced him in the last five games – averaging 50 fantasy points per contest. Serge Ibaka is a decent tournament play here. However, he is a bit too inconsistent to trust in cash games right now.

Miami Heat

The Heat are 10-6 on the season, with an impressive 8-3 record at home. The Heat aren’t getting a ton of love from the oddsmakers tonight though, as they are listed as 2-point underdogs in Miami. The good news is that this should be a pace-up game for the Heat, as the Thunder are one of the fastest-paced teams in the NBA.

Record: 10-6 — Home: 8-3 — Last 10: 7-3

The Thunder have the best rebounding differential in the NBA, but are otherwise a mediocre defense. On the season, they are ranked 14th or worse in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Heat may be underdogs tonight, but their implied team total of 99.3 points is three points higher than their average this season.

Luol Deng is not expected to play tonight, which means Gerald Green should draw another start at small forward. In the three games Deng has missed, Green has averaged 33 minutes and 22 fantasy points. Justise Winslow has also seen a boost in that stretch, averaging 31 minutes per game. Both are in play tonight against the Thunder. In what is expected to be a hard fought game, Dwyane Wade could see a few extra minutes tonight as well. I typically like to avoid Wade until he is playing in an important game, as the Heat have been very careful with him this season. Chris Bosh and Hassan Whiteside have to deal with two pesky defenders in Serge Ibaka and Steven Adams. They are secondary fantasy options tonight.

Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets have lost nine of their last ten games and are playing in the second half of a back-to-back. That doesn’t bode well for their chances tonight against the Raptors in Toronto. It comes as no surprise that the Nuggets are 10-point underdogs tonight on the road.

Record: 6-13 — Road: 3-7 — Last 10: 1-9

The Raptors have been very good defensively this season. The acquisition of DeMarre Carroll has really bolstered their defense on the wing. They are now ranked seventh or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, rebounding differential, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Nuggets are only projected to score 91.5 points, which is the second lowest team total on the board tonight.

Gary Harris cleared the league’s concussion protocol on Wednesday, so he should be back in the lineup tonight against the Raptors. This will send Randy Foye back to the bench and it may cut into the minutes for Will Barton. Kenneth Faried had a big game last night, but was seen limping around the locker room. For now, we will consider him questionable. With a lot team total, the potential for a blowout, and a difficult matchup, the Nuggets are an easy team to avoid tonight.

Toronto Raptors

The Raptors are also playing in the second half of a back-to-back, but they are coming off of an impressive win in Atlanta last night. The Raptors are looking to start a winning streak tonight, as they host the struggling Nuggets. This game has the highest spread on the board, as Toronto is favored by ten points.

Record: 12-7 — Home: 4-2 — Last 10: 6-4

The Nuggets have not fared well defensively this season. They are ranked 22nd or worse in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Raptors are projected to score 101.5 points tonight. While that may not seem like much, it is actually a point-and-a-half higher than their average on the season.

The biggest question here isn’t which players are in the best matchups, it’s whether or not the Nuggets can keep this game close enough that the starters will see their usual allotment of minutes. That’s a big question mark, but on a night with only six games, it is risky to fade the Raptors in such a great spot. Luis Scola and Bismack Biyombo are both strong value plays with Jonas Valanciunas out. The Nuggets do not defend the paint well and I don’t mind using the two together in the same lineup. Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan are both elite plays in their own right, as the Nuggets are ranked 27th and 30th against point guards and shooting guards, respectively. DeMarre Carroll draws the toughest matchup of the five starters, but he is a nice mid-range small forward option. And finally, I should note that Cory Joseph and Patrick Patterson could both see some extra run tonight with this game being the second in as many nights.

Orlando Magic

The Magic have struggled away from home this season. They have won seven of their last ten games, but many of those were played in Orlando. On the season, they are only 3-5 on the road. Tonight they travel to Utah to take on a Jazz team that will be without it’s defensive anchor in Rudy Gobert.

Record: 10-8 — Road: 3-5 — Last 10: 7-3

The Jazz have been an elite defense this season, but it’s hard to trust those numbers without Rudy Gobert in the lineup. The Magic are still only projected to score 93.5 points tonight though, which means Vegas is expecting the Jazz to still be fairly stout defensively. The Magic’s team total is eight points lower than their average on the season.

With a low team total and a difficult rotation to predict, I’m hesitant to list any of the Magic players as elite fantasy options tonight against the Jazz. It will be interesting to see if the Jazz start Trey Lyles or Trevor Booker. Either way, Derrick Favors will likely slide over and defend Nikola Vucevic. Favors is not the shutdown defender that Rudy Gobert is, but I’d still consider him an above-average low-post defender. Tobias Harris and Elfrid Payton have both had nice outings recently, but they are best suited as tournament plays tonight.

Utah Jazz

The Jazz are one of those borderline playoff teams that needs a break or two along the way. Unfortunately, they are going to be without their defensive anchor for the foreseeable future, as Rudy Gobert has an MCL sprain. The total for tonight’s game against the Magic has a low total, but it should be a close, competitive game. The Jazz are only favored by 3.5-points.

Record: 8-8 — Home: 3-3 — Last 10: 4-6

The Magic are better than advertised. They are above .500 this season and they are ranked 11th or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and rebounding differential. The Jazz have a low implied team total of 97 points tonight, but the Jazz are rarely projected to score more than 100 points.

With Rudy Gobert out, Derrick Favors and Trevor Booker stand to benefit the most. It will be interesting to see if the Jazz start Booker or if they bring him off the bench. Either way, he could push for 30 minutes tonight, as he actually matches up pretty well against Tobias Harris and Channing Frye. At his price point, Booker is one of the best value plays on the board. Favors is also an elite power forward option tonight. He will likely play the majority of his minutes at center and the Magic are ranked 20th against that position this season. Gordon Hayward has played well over his last five games, averaging 34.2 fantasy points per contest. This could be the last chance to target him at a price under $7,000. Rodney Hood and Alec Burks are also in play here, although I always seem to make the wrong choice between these two.

San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs have won eight of their last ten games and with a win last night, they improved to 15-4 on the season. San Antonio has the second highest point differential per game this season, trailing only the Golden State Warriors. Tonight’s game against the Grizzlies is expected to stay close though, as the Spurs are listed as 3.5-point favorites in Memphis.

Record: 15-4 — Road: 5-4 — Last 10: 8-2

The Grizzlies haven’t been great defensively. On the season, they are ranked 12th or worse in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, rebounding differential, and fantasy points allowed per game. This game should be played at a relatively slow pace though, and the Spurs team total is set at only 94.3 points.

Even though the Spurs team total is 4.5 points lower than their average points scored this season, they are still in play tonight. There aren’t many Spurs’ games where we can safely project the starters to see their usual minutes, but tonight is one of them. Kawhi Leonard remains an elite play at small forward. He has averaged 40.5 fantasy points per game in his last five and the Grizzlies have struggled against small forwards. Tim Duncan and Tony Parker are always a bit of a risk in the second half of back-to-back, but both played 20 minutes or less last night.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies are back to their winning ways, after a very slow start to the season. They have won eight of their last ten and they are sporting an impressive 6-3 record at home. A win over the Spurs would prove that the Grizzlies are back as second place contenders in the West – it’s hard to see anyone beating the Warriors in a seven-game series.

Record: 11-8 — Home: 6-3 — Last 10: 8-2

The Spurs are my least favorite team to target players against. They are truly elite on the defensive end of the floor, ranking third or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, rebounding differential, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Grizzlies are only projected to score 90.8 points tonight, which is the lowest team total on the board.

Early in the season, everyone loved to target point guards against the Spurs. I was skeptical of this strategy, as the Spurs have a great team defense and often find themselves on the winning end of blowouts. The Spurs have been the best team against point guards over the last seven days and they have improved to 18th on the season. At this point, I’m not going to list any player facing the Spurs as an elite fantasy option, unless of course there is an injury that opens up an obvious value play. Mike Conley and Marc Gasol aren’t the worst plays on the board, but there are better options at their respective positions.

Indiana Pacers

The Pacers are on FIYAA! They have won nine of their last ten games. They are looking for their seventh win in a row tonight, as they take on the Blazers in Portland. The Pacers are playing in the second half of a back-to-back, but they are still listed as 2-point favorites tonight.

Record: 12-5 — Road: 6-3 — Last 10: 9-1

The Blazers have been mediocre defensively this season. They are ranked between 17th and 21st in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Pacers have an implied team total of 101.3 points, which is the fourth highest on the board tonight.

Paul George has a higher three-point percentage than Stephen Curry. Yeah, mind blown, right? He is having a career year, averaging 27.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game. His price continues to climb, but if he keeps putting up 50 fantasy points a game, I’m more than willing to pay the $10,000 price tag. Al-Farouq Aminu is an above-average perimeter defender, but George contributes in so many areas that we shouldn’t knock him for a tough individual matchup. Outside of George, there really aren’t any Pacers that stand out tonight.

Portland Trail Blazers

The Blazers have lost seven of their last ten games, after playing well to start the season. Tonight they host the red-hot Pacers in what should be one of the fastest-paced games of the evening. Both of these teams have averaged at least 98 possessions per game this season.

Record: 7-12 — Home: 4-5 — Last 10: 3-7

Even though they have played with a quick tempo, the Pacers have one of the best defenses in the NBA. On the season, they are ranked fourth or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Blazers are projected to score 99.3 points tonight, which is a point-and-a-half lower than their season average.

Damian Lillard draws a difficult matchup tonight against George Hill, however, if I had to roster a Blazer tonight, it would be him. Lillard has really played well at home this season and with a turnover-adjusted usage rate of 27.5, you know how involved he is offensively. C.J. McCollum draws a nice matchup against Monta Ellis, but he could see a little bit of Paul George as well. I will be avoiding Mason Plumlee and Al-Farouq Aminu, as both have struggled in their last few games.
