Eruption Spot Finally Coming?
DFS Players have been jamming in the number one line for Colorado seemingly every slate lately, but the upside hasn’t been there. It’s been eight games since either Mikko Rantanen or Gabriel Landeskog have had a multi-point outing, while Nathan MacKinnon has just one during that span. Tonight’s home matchup against the Rangers could be just what they need to break out. They’ll be facing the backup goalie, Georgiev, who is allowing 3.22 goals per game on the year, including 4.26 GAA on the road. I’d be shocked if COL1 didn’t light the lamp multiple times tonight in route to an easy victory.

Dougie Hamilton finally broke out last night, potting a goal and an assist in just 14 minutes of ice time. The two points were already more than his point total in December (1). Dougie Hamilton sits fourth amongst defensemen in most shots on goal (128), but he has not found the back of the net which can only be blamed on the Carolina Curse (plenty of shots but little to show for it). Dougie’s price across the industry is affordable, and it’s hard to find similar upside in his price range.
No goal in more than a month for youngster
Clayton Keller has 29 points (8G, 21A) in 40 games, but he is in the midst of a massive goal drought at the moment. Accordingly, his price has seen a dip. Overall, Arizona’s offense has been one of the worst, but a matchup with a New Jersey team allowing 3.95 goals per game on the road is attackable. Even though he hasn’t scored a goal since December 1st, December was productive for Keller as he collected 14 points in 15 games. He is a fine option in all formats.
This centre has been heating up over the last 10 games.
With 15 points in his last 10 games, Mathew Barzal is really starting to heat up. He’s playing between Anthony Beauvillier and Josh Bailey as the New York Islanders host the Chicago Blackhawks. The Islanders have won seven of their last eight games, scoring at least three goals in each of their seven wins. They now take on a team that has struggled as of late, with the Blackhawks sporting an ugly 63.18 CA/60 over the last three weeks which is the third-worst mark in the NHL. Barzal is a solid one-off play as his wingers don’t play on the same power play unit as him, but they both play on the second unit together so there is some correlation on PP2 if you stack this line.

While the top line in Colorado has been getting all of the attention as of late given their dominant offensive numbers, the top line in Boston has something to say about that considering their elite offensive numbers come with elite defensive capabilities. They are still the best line in hockey, in my opinion, and in the five games since Patrice Bergeron has returned from injury, the trio has been dominant. In those 5 games, they have combined for 8 goals and 19 (!!!) points. This line has continuous elite upside as the three play together on the top power play unit giving them full-game correlation.

Robin Lehner, who is just $7,500 on FanDuel, stands out as a core play given the matchup and his torrid stretch. Lehner has recorded 36.8, 23.2, 20, 48.8 and 39.2 FanDuel Points in his last five appearances, with the middle outing coming in relief of Thomas Greiss. Lehner has been dialed in despite tough matchups which include a shutout in Toronto. Even on DraftKings, Lehner checks in under $8,000 and is a fine option in all formats as he routinely sees 30 plus shots per contest. This could be a flat spot for Chicago coming off their big Winter Classic showdown with the Boston Bruins.
This second line is in a sneaky good spot tonight.
The Montreal Canadiens’ “second line” was definitely been their top line since December 1st as Phillip Danault led the way with 13 points in 15 games. Tomas Tatar was also solid with 12 points over that stretch with Brendan Gallagher rounding the line out with a respectable, but not great, 8 points. However, Gallagher did fire a team-high 56 shots. The Habs are hosting the Vancouver Canucks — a team coming off an OT win against the Ottawa Senators last night as they are in the midst of their Eastern Canada swing. With Vancouver on the tail-end of a back to back, the Canadiens look to take advantage of the tired Canucks.

The St. Louis Blues have scored just two goals in their past two games, one of which came at home to the New York Rangers as Henrik Lundqvist stoned them. However, St. Louis’ top line of Brayden Schenn, Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko combined for 19 shots on goal. Washington sports the fifth-worst xGA/60 (2.68) at 5-on-5 on the road, and although scoring goals has been a big issue for the Blues, Schenn and the top line’s price is attractive enough to pair with another moderately priced line in tournaments.
Islanders winger looks for another multi-point performance
The Islanders have won four consecutive games, scoring three plus goals in the process. Although Bailey did not pick up a point in his last two games, he did have a multi-point game against Ottawa last Friday. Bailey’s price across the industry is still quite attractive on a night where the expensive superstars are not must-haves in average road matchups. Chicago is allowing nearly four goals per game on the road and a confident Islanders’ team will be tough to contain, especially with Mathew Barzal on a stellar run currently.
He may not be the best anymore, but this centre is still among the elite.
Sidney Crosby can probably safely be taken off the #1 player in the world pedestal, but that doesn’t mean he’s still not one of the best players in the world. He continues to carry his wingers and get them paid, and paid well. Ask Chris Kunitz, Pascal Dupuis and most recently Jake Guentzel (though he’s still a great player). Anyway, Crosby is playing with Guentzel and Bryan Rust on the Pittsburgh Penguins top line as they visit the New York Rangers. Rust is a game-time decision, so keep an eye on that. Crosby has put up 16 points in his last 10 games, with Rust piling up 8 goals during that same time frame. Over the Rangers last 10 games, they have a brutal 62.09 CA/60 and an NHL-worst 42.38 CF%. While the Penguins haven’t been much better, the talent on their team should overcome their recent poor possession numbers. Henrik Lundqvist is the only thing standing in the way of the Pens dominating the Rangers tonight.

Ben Bishop has allowed one or less goals in three of his last five starts, and he hasn’t allowed more than three goals in his last six starts. At home, he’s been nearly unstoppable with a 2.09 GAA and .933 SV% to go with a 8-3-2 record. Tonight, he faces a New Jersey team who has been a middle of the road team offensively. They’ll be without their best player in Taylor Hall, who was placed on IR recently.
Lock In Elite Defenseman
Brent Burns is a usage monster for the Sharks, and the addition of Erik Karlsson has done little to change that. A look at Burns’ game log shows how dominant he can be for fantasy purposes. Despite his team getting blown out, Burns had a pair of pairs an eight shots on goal against the Flames. He’s never shy about getting pucks on net, which gives him a reliably high floor. Tonight, I expect the matchup against Colorado to be a high-event game, the type Burns typically flourishes in.
This top line continues to dominate its competition.
I know this gets boring, but it’s tough to ignore arguably the best line in hockey on a shorter, six-game slate. Both Mikko Rantanen (62) and Nathan MacKinnon (59) remain second and third respectively in the NHL scoring race. When a line is this dominant, you always want to use them. They’re taking on the San Jose Sharks — a team that has been a dominant possession team this season. However, their goaltending is really starting to become an issue and is holding them back from the elite tier. The Sharks even strength save percentage is an abysmal .891, which is the second-worst mark in the NHL. While Colorado may not win the possession game, the elite talent could win out against the brutal goaltending of the Sharks.

Elias Pettersson has been better than anybody could have anticipated this season. He’s put up 19 goals in 36 games which paces out to 43 goals over an 82 game season. He’s currently slated to centre Brock Boeser and Antoine Roussel on the Vancouver Canucks second line as they head to Ottawa to take on the Senators. Ottawa remains dead last in goals against per game at 3.98. They are allowing 60.36 CA/60 over the last three weeks which is the ninth most over that stretch. Pettersson and Boeser both play on the top power play unit which gives the two-man mini-stack additional upside as Roussel doesn’t put up many offensive points, so leaving him off may be the best route to go.

The Penguins are flying high at the moment with eight wins in their last nine contests. After a six game point drought, Zach has picked up a point in each of his past two games, and a move to the top line with Sidney Crosby figures to pay dividends immediately. While Zach doesn’t see the power play time of his teammates, Aston-Reese has performed admirably at even-strength. He is a cheap way to gain exposure to the red-hot Penguins. Henrik Lundqvist has been able to mask the Rangers’ defensive woes, but containing three talented Penguins’ lines could prove too much to handle.
Edit @ 12:30 – Looks like Aston-Reese won’t be back on the top line as Bryan Rust participated in the morning skate, though he is still a game time decision. Dominik Simon is another cheap Penguin that could be worthy in tournaments as he has 10 shots on goal in his last three games, and the prices of both Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist are affordable
