Great price tag on Edmonton top liner
Ty Rattie checks in as a dirt-cheap option despite an average road matchup against the Arizona Coyotes. Since his move to the top line with Connor McDavid, Rattie has nine shots on goal and three assists in three games. Rattie is just $2,800 on DraftKings and his price on FanDuel ($3,600) is not prohibitive. Even when Rattie does not find the scoresheet, he usually contributes a couple shots which is all we are really looking for at such a low price.
Cheap blue liner continues to produce
With some more expensive names at the top of the list tonight like Brent Burns, Erik Karlsson and Mark Giordano, someone like Alexander Edler can slip through the cracks. Edler was productive in December after making his way back from injury in November. Last month Edler potted three goals and dished out six assists in 14 games. He blocks shots and shoots the puck, and at just $4,600 on FanDuel and $5,200 on DraftKings, Edler is a strong option in all formats.
This winger is an automatic play in cash games
While priced accordingly and excessively on DraftKings ($6,100), Brandon Pirri is just $4,000 on FanDuel, finally making the one week leap from the comical $3,300 price. Nonetheless, $4,000 is still a joke of a price tag given his shot-making prowess. Furthermore, Pirri has five goals and two assists in six games since his call-up as he is shining alongside veteran Paul Stastny. If you are playing cash games on FanDuel, don’t make the mistake of passing on Pirri. Regardless, he is a worthwhile tournament play even at the elevated DraftKings price tag given it is just a two game slate.
A defenseman to round out your roster tonight
Roman Josi is the top defenseman to target tonight given his consistency, but if you are looking for a complimentary piece or just a little savings on defense, Shea Theodore ticks all the boxes. Theodore is on Vegas’ top power play unit, and in each of his last six contests, Shea has taken three or more shots on goal. The points haven’t been there for him, but his peripherals are strong. Vegas will be looking for payback after the Kings smoked them 4-1 last weekend, and Shea is a cheap way to gain exposure to the home team.
This winger is healthy again and in a great spot.
Viktor Arvidsson leads the Nashville Predators in points per game with 15 in 16 games. He’ll be skating on the top line with Ryan Johansen and Ryan Hartman as the usual left winger Filip Forsberg is hurt. The Preds are fifth in the NHL with a 53.39 CF% and in a game with two teams on the tail end of a back to back it could be sloppy with both teams playing poor defensively.
Other tagged players: Ryan Johansen, Ryan HartmanOnce again, this top centre is leading his team in pointss.
This is a recording. Claude Giroux is once again leading his team in points with 44 in 38 games with the second most in the team being just 30. He’s playing with James Van Riemsdyk and Travis Konecny as the Philadelphia Flyers visit the Nashville Predators in a game in which both teams are on a back to back. Unfortunately neither winger plays on the power play with Giroux so he could be an interesting one-off play if you don’t want to stack the entire line.

William Karlsson leads the Vegas Golden Knights in goals with 15 and is tied with Jonathan Marchessault in points. As usual you, those two are playing together along with Reilly Smith. The trio also play together on the top power play unit which gives them full-game correlation. Vegas is taking on the Los Angeles Kings who are on the tail end of a back to back while Vegas is rested so it could be a great spot for this line.

John Gibson can be a wall, but the wall was taken down last game against a timid Coyotes’ offense that poured on five goals against Gibson. Gibson’s task tonight is the worst matchup in the league – a Tampa Bay offense which continues to score goals for fun. Palat has not been a big part of it, but skating on the top line and top power play with Steven Stamos boosts his value. Tampa Bay’s second line is their best line of course, but Tampa Bay is so deep that all the lines are in play. Palat makes for a low-owned play on this massive New Year’s Eve slate.
Goalie Has Been Lights Out at Home
Ben Bishop has allowed one or less goals in three of his last four starts, picking up wins in those three games. At home, he’s been nearly unstoppable with a 2.02 GAA and .935 SV% to go with a 8-3-1 record. Tonight, he faces a Montreal team who has been a middle of the road team offensively. Vegas has the Stars as a -165 favorite and I fully expect Bishop to pick up the win.
Superstar Questionable Tonight
Jack Eichel will be a true game-time decision tonight against the Islanders at home. The loss of Eichel would be a huge blow for the Sabres, although it would open up opportunities for the likes of Casey Mittelstadt. If Eichel does play, he could be a GPP winner and possesses as much upside as anyone on the slate.
Young Defenseman Seeing Expanded Role
Zachary Werenski had an excellent rookie season, but had seemingly regressed last year and at the start of this year. His coach seems to have regained his faith in him, and it’s been reflected in his ice time. He’s seen 21+ minutes in his last seven games and is now on the number one power play. His teammate Seth Jones will receive more attention, but he’s much more expensive on all sites. Werenski gets a dream matchup against the Senators, who possess the league’s worst defense.
Hottest Player in NHL Could See Reduced Ownership
With a number of superstars at home in favorable matchups (MacKinnon, Eichel, McDavid, etc.), it’s possible Nikita Kucherov and the Lightning go overlooked tonight. Kucherov has been the hottest player in the NHL, with 21 points in his last 10 games. He’s also seen an uptick in icetime, with 20+ minutes in four straight games. The Ducks have been playing better lately, but are still massive underdogs at home against the potent Lightning team.
Speedy winger set to skate with streaking center
Dylan Larkin extended his point streak to 13 games last time out in Dallas, taking a whopping nine shots on goal. The ever-dangerous Andreas Athanasiou is set to skate with Larkin again tonight as Nyquist moves down to the second line. Andreas has been cold recently, but skating with Larkin should do wonders for him rather than with Frans Nielsen, Thomas Vanek and the like. Athanasiou is dirt-cheap across the industry and we have seen him flash multi-point upside earlier this season when he was healthy. A matchup with a Florida team playing their third game in four nights is exploitable.
Winnipeg blue liner takes on reeling Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers have been getting blown off the ice recently, and everything has reached the tipping point with management making some flabbergasting moves once again. The Jets are coming off two disappointing defeats at home, but stand a good chance to bounce back. With Dustin Byfuglien out at least a month, Josh Morrissey figures to see a good allotment of minutes as he has in the past when Big Buff is out. Morrisey is $5,000 on DraftKings which isn’t the most attractive price, but on FanDuel ($4,100), Morrisey is a standout play, much like Darnell Nurse who is still just $4,600 there.
This quasi-third line has a lot of offensive potential
If the Calgary Flames treat the line of Evander Kane, Tomas Hertl and Kevin Labanc as the third line (even the second line) they could be in for a big game against the Flames lower-end players. Kane leads the team in shots despite being tied for 7th on the team in points. He is struggling to convert on his scoring opportunities even though his shooting percentage is only down a bit from his career numbers. The three are all jumbled up between the power play units, which is problematic, but utilizing the trio as a strong, low-owned even strength stack is still a great as the San Jose Sharks lead the NHL with a 60.00 CF% at 5-on-5 over the last three weeks.
