This teams second line has a premium matchup tonight.
Despite having just 31 points, Patrik Laine has an impressive 24 goals which is fourth in the NHL. His lack of assists is a bit troubling as goals can be very streaky, but when he’s on he puts them in the net in bunches. This second line has been solid this season, with Kyle Connor being a surprise as the second-highest shot producer on the team behind Laine. With Little down the middle, he’s not the best option but the three work well together. Laine and Connor play on the top power play unit together so they make for an obvious two-man mini-stack if you want to leave Little off the full line stack.

Despite not leading the team in goals or points, Aleksander Barkov is certainly the best player on the team. He’s become one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL and his 15 goals and 39 points in 37 games are still very good. He’s playing on the top line alongside team point-leader Jonathan Huberdeau and Evgenii Dadonov. The trio play together on the top power play unit which gives them full game correlation and elite upside. Their matchup against the Detroit Red Wings is great as they struggle on the PK, killing off just 73.8 percent of their penalties which ranks 28th.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are rolling, picking up 11 wins in 12 games, with their only loss coming in overtime in Winnipeg. Yanni Gourde has not been a big part of that however as he has just one goal and four assists this month. However, his price is under $5,000 on both DraftKings and FanDuel now. With J.T. Miller banged up, Gourde could see more run on the power play. With a red-hot Steven Stamkos centering him, Gourde is a nice option to gain exposure to one of the highest scoring game environments of the evening.
Speedy Capitals' winger could thrive against sloppy defense
Jakub Vrana doesn’t get the same ice time as some of his teammates, but he’s been putting up decent shot totals with Evgeny Kuznetsov as his center. Last Saturday night in Ottawa, Vrana potted a goal on three shots. With the Senators back to back after giving up five unanswered goals to an average Islanders’ offense, Ottawa will have their hands full with a Washington team that has won eight of their last nine contests. Vrana and his linemates make for an affordable secondary stack with considerable upside.
Brad Marchand looks doubtful for tonight
Accordingly, Danton Heinen figures to see top line duties alongside Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak. Heinen has logged 15-plus minutes over his last three contests, picking up two assists with 10 shots on goal. While this matchup figures to be much lower scoring than other contests, so much of the Bruins’ production comes from their top line and top power play unit. Heinen checks in at under $4,000 on DraftKings and FanDuel which makes him a solid source of salary relief in cash games.
Caps Prepare for a Tired Ottawa Squad
The Washington Capitals have made it back to the top of the heap in the Metropolitan Division and they couldn’t have done it without the stellar play of defenseman John Carlson. Not only does he lead the team with 17 power play points, his 37 points are third most in the league where defensive scoring is concerned. Tonight we get the double bonus as not only does Washington play on home ice but they get to play the Ottawa Senators who are the second worst team in the Eastern Conference. Add in the fact that Ottawa played last night in New York and you have yourself a defenseman that should do very well this evening.
Eichel to Feast Against a Banged-Up Boston Team
Despite going 4-5-2 in their last 11 games the Buffalo Sabres have still managed to keep things interesting as they are just three points ahead of tonight’s opponent for third place in the Metropolitan Division. Jack Eichel has morphed into one of the best players in the game as he has lit the lamp 10 times to go along with seven assists in the team’s last 11 games. Mike Skinner has helped him out tremendously as they are a deadly duo on home ice tonight against a once again depleted Boston Bruin team. While Skinner leads the team with 26 goals it is Eichel who has the team lead with 34 assists and 49 points in 38 games. Buffalo’s home record is 12-4-2 so look for the top line to get the juicy match-ups for most of the night.

Sean Monahan is the exact opposite of Patrick Kane in that he gets to stand in the shadows of the team’s superstar Johnny Gaudreau. With the way that the Calgary Flames have been scoring goals of late it is no surprise that Monahan has lit the lamp seven times to go along with nine assists over the last 12 games. He also leads the team with 21 goals so far this season which has helped him to become the Flames second leading scorer with 43 points in 38 games. Monahan seems to like the home ice a little better as he has scored 12 goals and 22 points in the 18 games Calgary has played in front of their home crowd.

It doesn’t matter how you slice it Patrick Kane is a straight up stud. He has been for years actually as he has become one of the most reliable players in the game in terms of scoring. It’s unfortunate that he was able to complete the hat trick the other night as now others may see him as hot and play him tonight as well. The fact is that it doesn’t matter as he has grabbed seven goals and 11 assists in the last 14 games which now has him sitting at 20 goals and 27 assists for the season. The Colorado penalty kill has given up eight goals over the last nine games which is the most in the league so maybe Chicago can get on the horse and jump start their top power play unit this evening. Regardless, Kane makes for a decent play on any night of the week.
Top line in great spot on home ice
The Dallas Stars will host the Detroit Red Wings tonight. The Star’s top line has disappointed us a few times so far this year, but I will be going back to the well again tonight. When Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn, and Alexander Radulov are on the same line, we know they have massive upside with great chemistry and play making ability. The Star’s CEO also said the team needs more out of Benn and Seguin, so there’s a bit of a squeaky wheel narrative also. Detroit is giving up the fifth most HDCA/60 at 12 per game and their CA/60 is 59.29. The Star’s top line should have plenty of chances and offensive zone-time to get the team back on track tonight. Defenseman John Klingberg is the power-play quarterback you want to stack up with this trio.
Other tagged players: Jamie Benn, Alexander Radulov, John KlingbergThis line will see plenty of high danger scoring chances
The Colorado Avalanche mixed up their lines slightly as Matt Nieto replaces Landeskog on the top line alongside Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. This line should see plenty of high danger scoring chances against a Chicago team giving up the most in the league at 13.33 HDCA/60. Power-play defenseman Tyson Barrie always seems to get overlooked, but he makes a nice addition to this stack as he correlates on the top power-play unit. The high price tag on this line stack makes it challenging to stack, and is a way I look to differentiate my lineup in GPP’s.
Other tagged players: Mikko Rantanen, Matt Nieto, Tyson BarrieThis line should dominate from puck drop
Alexander Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and T.J. Oshie will visit the Ottawa Senators tonight. Ottawa continues to be a team that we want to target against and they are playing their second game in as many nights. They currently are in last place in the league in CA/60 and GA/60. Special teams may play a big role tonight, as Ottawa’s weak penalty kill (74.5%), takes on the Capital’s seventh ranked power play (23.5%). Adding John Carlson to the stack is a nice addition, as he quarterbacks the team’s first power-play unit and correlates with all three forwards.

Mathew Barzal is centering Anthony Beauvillier and Josh Bailey as the New York Islanders host the Ottawa Senators. Ottawa has been terrible defensively and whole they’ve been better as of late, they are still allowing a league-worst 3.89 goals against per game. As the top centre with John Tavares off to Toronto, Barzal has done a fine job picking up 29 points in 35 games. Barzal and Bailey are both on the top power play unit as well which is great considering Ottawa has the 30th ranked PK which kills off just 74.3 percent of their penalties.
Other tagged players: Anthony Beauvillier, Josh BaileyThis centre is fitting right in on his new team.
Max Domi has been fantastic for the Montreal Canadiens in his first season on the team. He leads the team with 35 points in 37 games and is second with 14 goals. He’s been playing with Jonathan Drouin and Paul Byron on the Habs top line, and they’ve been solid together. Drouin and Domi both play on the top power play unit and while the full line stack is a good play, the two man mini-stack of those two with their PP correlation makes for a solid play.
Other tagged players: Jonathan Drouin, Paul ByronThis centre has been dominant in his limited games.
With the Christmas break over, Auston Matthews could finally be back to full health. As he took some time to get back up to speed following his shoulder injury, the final games before Christmas he was looking more like his old self and we could see an explosion moving forward — as if he wasn’t dominant enough as it was. He’ll be lining up with Kasperi Kapanen and Patrick Marleau, which has been a solid even strength line. However, the fact that neither winger plays on the top PP unit makes it a bit less desirable. Matthews as a one off play is always an elite one and is perhaps the move to make tonight.
