Best Golfer in the World is Priced at a Discount
Of the five most expensive golfers in the field this week, Thomas is my favorite. Over the last 50 rounds, he is ranked first in DK scoring. He’s officially the number one golfer in the world, which is a title that he wants to hold as long as possible. In this field, he is ranked in the top 13 in off the tee, approach, around the green, birdie or better percentage, and par five scoring. His lack of elite course history should keep his ownership under 20%, even though he brings more winning equity to the table than any other golfer in the field. He has yet to finish outside of the top 25 this season and he posted his best finish at this event in 2017 (T4).
Ryan Moore ranks as a top value play amongst our experts
Multiple PGA Tour winner Ryan Moore is gaining steam as a popular mid-tier value play this week. Looking to bounce back from a rare missed cut at last year’s Memorial Tournament, Moore has a very solid course history at Muirfield Villiage. In 12 starts at this event, Moore has 7 top 25 or better finishes including a runner-up finish in 2007. Currently ranked in the 29th position in the Ryder Cup standings, Moore will need some serious magic in the second half of the season if he has any hope to make the team for the second time. Priced lower than other popular players in the second tier, Moore stands out as both a source of value and upside this week. A great ball striker who is not afraid to go low, Moore already has 4 top 10 finishes this year and is in a great spot to potentially crush his salary this week.
As reported by: DraftKings PGA Value RankingsJason Day withdrew from the Pro-Am this morning with fever
Ohio resident Jason Day withdrew from The Memorial Pro-Am with fever. Day was replaced in the event by Kyle Stanley. Day’s first win of the season came at The Farmers Insurance Open, an event in which he also missed the Pro-Am. Trying to figure out the impact of a cold on his game is probably not the easiest thing to handicap. For now, all we know is that Day is a little under the weather but should play this week. The last time he missed a Pro-Am it was for a bad back, so the chance of him finishing the tournament was a real concern. Already predicted to have a low ownership number, the news on Day could further drop that number making him an interesting GPP play for this week.
As reported by: PGA Tour Communications TwitterA Massive Risk/Reward GPP Play
This one is NOT for the faint of heart, and it’s definitely a GPP-only play. However, I love the way that Gary Woodland sets up for this event in DFS. His current form is nothing short of abhorrent, as he has missed four consecutive cuts on the PGA Tour. You are almost guaranteed to get him at sub-5% ownership this week. Despite his recent struggles, he still ranks 32nd on Tour in par five scoring and 2nd in ball striking for the year. It’s a testament to how well he started the year, but it also shows his potential. This course should be one where he is able to find some form, and a few weeks off should have helped him to clear his mind. Call me crazy if you want, but I have a hunch we see a top 20 out of Woodland this week, and he’s priced about $2,000 to $3,000 lower on every site than he was three months ago.
A Fantastic GPP Option
Hello, contrarian play? Patrick Cantlay was a popular selection last week but ended up with an ugly missed cut, and he didn’t even sniff the cut line. Recency bias tells us that a lot of folks who got burned last week will run far away, so that means we can get Cantlay at lower ownership. We can also get him at a super affordable price tag on DraftKings, and he’s priced just below your average salary to spend per golfer on FanDuel and FantasyDraft, too. That’s a stark discount from where he was priced a week ago, and that combined with the lower ownership is music to my ears in GPP formats. He isn’t any less talented after one missed cut, as even the best golfers have off weeks. Expect a bounce-back performance here.
A Top Point Per Dollar Option
He will undoubtedly be one of the more popular picks of the week, as DFS players love to roster Tony Finau, and he’s surprisingly affordable for our purposes here. He ranks above average in ball striking and approach metrics while ranking inside the top five on Tour in par five scoring. That’s a potent combination on this golf course, and Finau sets up almost as well as anyone on this layout. He’s already parlayed that into a 3-for-3 cut made mark with a pair of top 15’s here, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him grab another one this week. He will be on a good chunk of my lineups despite a likely elevated ownership, as I will look to differentiate my GPP rosters in other areas.
Ready to Roar
The stars are starting to align for one Tiger Woods. He carded a scintillating 65/69 weekend pair of rounds at THE PLAYERS in his last start, perhaps showing a sign of things to come. Tiger Woods has played in this event 15 times, and he has made the cut every time. He also has five wins to his credit at Muirfield Village. He should be able to feast on the par fives here, and he will be able to club down on some of the par fours in order to take the occasionally wayward driver out of play. The price tag is not as exorbitant as I would have expected, and I think Tiger re-announces his presence on the PGA Tour with a big win this week. I’ll happily target him in all formats, and that’s coming from the guy who was “the curmudgeon” for the better part of the last couple months.
Lucas Glover set to return to action after unfortunate altercation
Former major champion and PGA Tour veteran Lucas Glover will return to action this week for the first time since an off the course issue with his wife. After missing the 3rd round cut at The Players Championship, Glover’s wife reportedly abused the star golfer both verbally and physically after his poor play. Police were called to the scene and Glover’s wife spent the night in jail and is awaiting her date in court on charges related to the altercation. The Glover’s are reportedly back together and are hopeful that the charges will get dropped. For Lucas, this will be an opportunity to get away from the struggles of home life and get back to work. As we saw with Billy Horschel last season, sometimes a family struggle can lead to a better play on the course. Glover will tee it up in his 14th Memorial this week, and he will look to perhaps make the best out of a bad situation. Never a player that draws a ton of fanfare, Glover will once again trend as a very low owned option this week. If you are looking for a deep sleeper type of play in large field GPP’s Glover does have 4 straight made cuts at this event and has the tee to green game that could fair well at Muirfield Village.
As reported by: DraftKings Projected OwnershipNo First-Timer Blues
When it comes to performing on a new course, X has proven he can get the job done. He won the Greenbrier Classic without ever seeing the course in competition and the same can be said about his win at East Lake. His recent runner-up finish at TPC Sawgrass was also on his debut. In fact all seven of his career top 10s were in tournament debuts. Schauffele also ranks inside the top 15 in this field when it comes to performance on fast greens (stimpmeter over 12 feet). That is great news as Muirfield Village has some of the fastest greens on TOUR.
Converging Trends for the South African
The 42-year-old South African has turned back the clocks recently. He arrives with five straight top 30s to his name. Sabbatini also arrives with top 30s in 7 of his last 8 starts at the Memorial. Sabbs was even the 36-hole leader here back in 2012. It’s a course that fits his eye and with an uptick in recent form, Sabbatini has the perfect mix of converging trends. On the downside, his form has not been lost to the public. He’s approached 10% ownership in cash games in each of his last two starts and I’d expect him to easily eclipse 10% this week.
Comfort on the Course
Arriving with top 30s in five of his last six starts, Moore has hit his stride, just in time to battle a course he really enjoys. “I think there are certain courses you just feel comfortable on, and this is one of those for me. Even when I’m struggling coming into this tournament, this course, for some reason, it seems to produce good golf scores for me. It’s one of those things, it’s one of my favorite courses we play certainly all year, and I’m very comfortable on it.” That checks out as he’s been T23 or better after R2 in 10 of his 12 starts here. He’s converted seven of those into top 25s. With stellar form and confidence on the course, Moore should be strongly considered in cash and GPP lineups.
DraftKings projections are live and Tony Finau ranks as a top play
Currently ranked in the 35th position in the world, Tony Finau is in the midst of having another great season on the PGA Tour. Known for his prodigious length off the tee, Finau has a tour resume built on consistent play. Over the last three and half years as a full-time member of the PGA Tour, Finau has posted a top 25 or better finish in 47% of his starts. With only one win under his belt, Finau has yet to really take the next big step in his career. Priced accordingly for his lack of wins, Finau really stands out as a top player in the RotoGrinders DraftKings projections in terms of Pt/$/K. Fueled by 5 top 10’s already this season and currently ranked inside the top 11 in the FedEx Cup standings, Finau will look to build on his previous experiences at The Memorial. Making his 4th start at Muirfield Village, Finau will look to improve on his perfect cut record and his two top 15 or better finishes. The combination of his overall form and the discount on pricing makes Finau a very strong option in a wide variety of roster build options for the 2018 Memorial Tournament.
As reported by: Rotogrinders Projections ToolPGA rosters lock in 15 minutes, and no major news to report
Outside of the already reported withdrawal of Charl Schwartzel its all quiet on the news front this morning. Weather should be warm with very little wind this week, creating a good scoring environment for the field. Rosters lock in fifteen minutes, but for now, there is no news to report. Good luck this week grinders, as always if any late news breaks we will provide the updates needed. coming soon.
Justin Rose flying under the radar
For the second straight week, the choice of whether or not to roster odds-on favorite Jordan Spieth is having a great impact on projected ownership numbers. Due to both the high price of Spieth and the lack of roster flexibility associated with adding him to a lineup, it’s very hard for the other top priced players to gain much traction. Currently projected to have the lowest ownership numbers of the top five price players in this week’s field, Justin Rose could end up being a sneaky pivot play in GPP’s on DraftKings this week. Playing in his first Colonial since the 2010 season, Rose is currently projected to have around 10% ownership for the week. Known for his ability to hit both accurate and long golf shots, Rose is the type of player that should play well on this ball strikers course. Looking to grab his first win of the season, Rose comes into the week having posted five top 15 or better worldwide finishes. If you are looking to get away from the Spieth chalk this week, Rose represents a great opportunity to differentiate your lineups for the 2018 Fort Worth Invitational.
As reported by: DraftKings Projected OwnershipWeather update for The Fort Worth Invitational
Kevin Roth’s weather report for The Fort Worth Invitational is up in the main forum, and for now, it looks like the weather should not factor into your roster-building decisions. Normally we have to pay attention to the wind a bit more at Colonial, but according to Roth the first two days of golf should have a very consistent wind pattern. Roth calls for winds to blow anywhere between 5 to 10 mph each day giving no real edge to one tee time wave. The Texas summer has started a bit early and all four days of golf should have temperatures into the low to mid 90’s. Everything considered this is a great week for golf, and the lack of weather should yield some low scores at Colonial this week.
