Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.277 (Rank: 26) — Strikeout Rate: 21.5% (Rank: 20)
Pitchers per PA: 3.98 (Rank: 1)
Analysis: There is only one game in the afternoon today, but it is included in the “All-Day” slate, so we will include it in the Grind Down. Koehler has pitched well in his recent starts, posting a 3.08 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 21.3%. He has never been a high strikeout pitcher in his career though and he comes into today’s game as a huge underdog against the Cubs. Chicago is not the best offensive team in the National League, but they lead the majors in pitches per plate appearance.
Pitcher Rating:53.0
Jason Hammel : FD: $9,100 — DK: $7,100

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.282 (Rank: 25) — Strikeout Rate: 22.2% (Rank: 24)
Pitchers per PA: 3.71 (Rank: 28)
Analysis: If you are playing anyone from this game, Hammel is probably the best play at any position. He has been terrific over the last two seasons, posting a 3.32 SIERA with an impressive strikeout rate of 23.5%. He draws a favorable matchup against a Marlins’ offense that struggles against right-handed pitching. On the season, Miami is ranked 25th in wOBA (.293) and 21st in strikeout rate (20.5%) against righties. The Marlins are also missing their best hitter in Giancarlo Stanton.
Pitcher Rating:92.1
Batter Grind Down
Miami
The Marlins’ offense lacks serious power without Giancarlo Stanton in the lineup. While Justin Bour does provide some pop every now and then, he is nowhere near the same caliber of hitter as Stanton. Jason Hammel should be able to dominate this lineup, as he has held left and right-handed hitters under a .295 wOBA over the last two seasons.
Elite / Secondary Plays:
NONE
Chicago Cubs
Even though the Cubs have a lot of young talent in their lineup, they have really struggled to score runs this season. They are ranked 20th in wOBA against right-handed pitching. Today’s matchup against Tom Koehler is a decent one, but none of the Cubs’ hitters stand out as must plays. Koehler has held left and right-handed hitters under a .315 wOBA over the last two seasons.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.319 (Rank: 18) — Strikeout Rate: 22.1% (Rank: 23)
Pitchers per PA: 3.73 (Rank: 24)
Analysis: Peavy will make his first start since April 17th, as a back injury has kept him out of action for over two months. He hasn’t been very sharp in his rehab starts and I’m a bit concerned about his strikeout rate moving forward, as he is an aging pitcher. Peavy draws a decent matchup tonight against the Nationals, but he is a large underdog in this game. Let’s wait a couple of starts to see what type of form he is in before targeting him in daily fantasy.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.353 (Rank: 2) — Strikeout Rate: 20.9% (Rank: 17)
Pitchers per PA: 3.73 (Rank: 25)
Analysis: Gonzalez has not pitched well in his recent outings, posting a 4.40 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 23.2%. His recent struggles are a bit perplexing, as his velocity and swinging-strike rate are both around his career averages. If he can find the strike zone, he’ll be back to his 2014 form in no time. He is a sizable favorite tonight at home against a Giants’ offense that is ranked 13th in wOBA (.311) against left-handed pitching. He is a buy-low candidate on DraftKings ($7,900).

San Francisco
The Giants are a team that prides itself in putting the ball in play. They don’t strike out very often, but they don’t have a ton of power in their lineup either. They draw a fairly difficult matchup tonight against Gio Gonzalez, who has held left and right-handed hitters under a .310 wOBA over the last two seasons. Buster Posey and Matt Duffy are worth a look, but both are secondary options at their respective positions.

The Nationals square off against Jake Peavy, who hasn’t made a start in over two months. Rust could be an issue for the aging Peavy and the Nationals could have a decent offensive outing in this one. Over the last two seasons, Peavy has given up a .332 wOBA to left-handed hitters. Bryce Harper provides the upside for tournaments, while Denard Span provides the consistency that we are looking for in cash games.

Analysis: After an outstanding start to the season, Bauer has reached the summit and is now plummeting back down the mountain. He has a 4.92 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 20.2% and a walk rate of 13.7% over the last month. Tonight he faces a Pirates’ offense that is trending in the opposite direction, after a huge series against the Tigers. Bauer is a risky play at this point and I will be avoiding him in all formats tonight.

Pitchers per PA: 3.93 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: Morton is one of those pitchers that does what is asked of him. He doesn’t strike out a ton of batters, but he produces a very high ground-ball rate and he typically gives his team a chance to pick up the win. Tonight he faces an Indians’ offense that has really cooled off since the start of the season. Over the last 14 days, they are ranked 21st in both wOBA (.298) and strikeout rate (21.7%). I’ll likely have zero shares of Morton tonight, but you could certainly do worse at pitcher.

The Pirates’ offense has to be feeling pretty good right now after a huge offensive explosion in a sweep over the Tigers. They will look to keep things rolling tonight against Trevor Bauer, who has not pitched well recently. Bauer is a right-handed pitcher, but he actually gives up a much higher wOBA to right-handed hitters. The right-handed power bats in the Pirates’ lineup are all in play tonight.

Analysis: Archer has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. He has been sharp in his recent starts, posting a 2.64 SIERA with an elite strikeout rate of 27.9% over the last month of play. The issue with Archer tonight is his matchup. While he could certainly come out and pitch a gem against the Yankees, the odds of that happening are a lot smaller than they would be in a more favorable matchup. The Yankees are ranked fourth in wOBA (.328) and seventh in strikeout rate (18.6%) against right-handed pitching this season. Archer is still a decent target in tournament play, but he’s overpriced for cash games.

Analysis: Of the two aces on the mound in this matchup, Tanaka has the better matchup. He has been in great form since coming back from injury, posting a 2.82 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.8%. Tanaka always has great command and he is always keeping hitters guessing at the plate. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Rays, who are coming off of a historically bad series against the Indians. The Rays are now ranked 26th in wOBA (.292) and 25th in strikeout rate (22.0%) against right-handed pitching.

As mentioned above, the Rays have been awful at the plate recently. They are making every pitcher they face look like a dominant ace. NY Yankees
The Yankees may be small favorites tonight, but they have a very low team total considering the fact that they are playing at home in the hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium. Analysis: Sanchez has been tough to predict this season. For example, in his last five starts, he has two shutouts and three games with at least three earned runs allowed. He has been inconsistent, which is not a quality that we look for from a pitcher. He is a small favorite tonight, but he should be avoided against the potent offense of the Blue Jays. Toronto is ranked third in wOBA (.330) against right-handed pitching and fifth in wOBA (.347) over the last 14 days.

Toronto
The Blue Jays are in a decent spot tonight, but they are a bit overpriced for their matchup. Comerica Park is not as hitter-friendly as the Rogers Centre and Anibal Sanchez is a competent pitcher. Jose Reyes and Edwin Encarnacion are both in play here, but they are secondary options at their respective positions.

The Tigers are looking to get back on track tonight after getting swept by the Pirates at home. They have a good chance to do just that, as they square off against Drew Hutchison. The left and right-handed hitters in this lineup are in play tonight.
