Pittsburgh Pirates Offense (2015)
vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.304 (Rank: 18) — Strikeout Rate: 23.5% (Rank: 26)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.299 (Rank: 20) — Strikeout Rate: 25.7% (Rank: 29)
Pitchers per PA: 3.78 (Rank: 18)
Analysis: Gonzalez may have a 1.89 ERA over the last month of play, but his indicators basically say that he has been the same pitcher that he has been all season. He is an above-average left-handed pitcher with a slightly above-average strikeout rate. The Pirates numbers against left-handed pitching don’t look great on paper, but you have to think they will improve in that area with so many quality right-handed hitters in their lineup. Gonzalez is a small underdog here and with the way the Nationals’ offense is playing, he will likely see little to no run support.
Pitcher Rating:65.5
A.J. Burnett : FD: $8,900 — DK: $8,800
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 339.0 — SIERA: 3.82 — ERA: 3.80 — K%: 20.1% — BB%: 9.0% — HR/9: 0.7

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.280 (Rank: 25) — Strikeout Rate: 25.4% (Rank: 28)
Pitchers per PA: 3.74 (Rank: 25)
Analysis: Burnett comes into tonight’s start in arguably his worst form of the season. He has a 4.05 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 14.4% over the last month of play. The good news is that he gets to pitch at home tonight and that he gets to face a Nationals’ offense that is ranked 25th in team wOBA and 28th in strikeout rate over the last 14 days of play. Their lineup looks more like a Triple-A lineup than it does a major league lineup. Burnett is certainly in play here as an SP2 or as a tournament option.

The Nationals may have scored some runs last night, but they have really been struggling offensively in the last few weeks. They are missing three of their best players and eventually, that’s going to take a toll. Bryce Harper is the only fantasy option of note here, as A.J. Burnett does struggle with left-handed hitters.

The Pirates draw a fairly difficult matchup against Gio Gonzalez tonight at home. The Pirates are favorites, but this game has a very low total of 7.0 runs. There are better matchups to exploit tonight. That said, the right-handed bats of Starling Marte and Jung-Ho Kang are in play as secondary options.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.323 (Rank: 11) — Strikeout Rate: 16.8% (Rank: 6)
Pitchers per PA: 3.93 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: It’s not quite to the level of Clayton Kershaw, but there are few pitchers that I get more excited to see on the schedule than Chris Sale. He has been terrific over the last two seasons, posting a 2.45 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 31.4%. He throws a ton of strikes and the White Sox typically allow him to throw 110+ pitches when he’s going well. His matchup against the Indians doesn’t appear great on paper, but he quickly dismantled them in their first meeting, striking out seven batters in eight innings of work. He has as much upside as any pitcher on the board tonight, the only question is whether or not he can get the win.
Pitcher Rating:88.8
Carlos Carrasco : FD: $9,300 — DK: $10,300

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.269 (Rank: 27) — Strikeout Rate: 23.1% (Rank: 25)
Pitchers per PA: 3.77 (Rank: 21)
Analysis: Carrasco is another high strikeout pitcher that deserves consideration tonight. Over the last month of play, he has a 2.35 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 30.2%. He draws the better matchup of the these two pitchers, as the White Sox are ranked 25th in team wOBA and 16th in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. The upside is there and I have a feeling that he will get overlooked with Chris Sale pitching opposite him.
Pitcher Rating:85.9
Batter Grind Down
Chicago White Sox / Cleveland
This is expected to be a pitcher’s duel. Since the start of last season, Chris Sale and Carlos Carrasco have both held left and right-handed hitters under a .285 wOBA. Offensive production should be light tonight, which makes both of these teams easy to avoid for daily fantasy purposes.

Analysis: Lee will be making his first career major league start tonight. He was the 28th overall pick in the 2010 draft. In 12 minor league starts this season, he has a 3.65 FIP with a strikeout rate of 18.6%. He draws a terrific matchup right out of the gate, but if you’ve read my Grind Downs before, you know that I like to avoid pitchers making their debuts. Consider Lee a deep tournament play tonight against the Mets.

Pitchers per PA: 3.88 (Rank: 5)
Analysis: I have no proof of this, but I believe that this is the lowest that Harvey has been rated all season. He comes into tonight’s start in terrible form, posting a 5.11 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 17.4% and a walk rate of 13.8% over the last month of play. He doesn’t seem to have that bravado on the mound and he’s not attacking hitters the way that we have seen him do in the past. I expect him to turn it around shortly, but that may not come tonight against the Dodgers, who are ranked second in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season.

This is a situation where I will be avoiding both the pitcher and the offense that he is facing. Matt Harvey has been shelled in his recent outings, but he is still Matt Harvey. The Dodgers hit right-handed pitching well as a team, but they are overpriced for their difficult matchup in Citi Field.

The Mets didn’t fare too well against Ian Thomas last night, but they get to face another young, inexperienced pitcher tonight. Unfortunately, until he can prove that he can get right-handed hitters out, I will continue to avoid him in all league formats.

I have to trust the larger sample size here though, as he has a 4.51 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 15.3% over the last two seasons. I will be avoiding him tonight against the Yankees, who are ranked fifth in team wOBA and sixth in strikeout rate against left-handed pitching this season.

The Yankees draw a favorable matchup against Tommy Milone, who has given up a .347 wOBA to right-handed hitters over the last two seasons. Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury are two left-handed hitters that fare well against southpaws, but this isn’t the best matchup for either player, as Milone has kept hitters from the left side of the plate in check. Kansas City
The Royals are a very sneaky offense to target tonight. Their players usually have low ownership levels because they don’t hit a lot of home runs, but they are one of the most consistent offenses in baseball. They draw a favorable matchup tonight against Scott Feldman, who has given up a .317+ wOBA to left and right-handed hitters over the last two seasons.
