The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.296 (Rank: 28) — Strikeout Rate: 24.0% (Rank: 28)
Pitches per PA: 3.73 (Rank: 27)
Analysis: Strasburg — my arch nemesis — takes the mound for the Nationals tonight. He has been in good form since returning from injury, posting a 2.54 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 30.8%. His numbers have dipped away from Nationals Park in his career, but a matchup against the Phillies more than makes up for the fact that this start is on the road. Strasburg is a large favorite that should see plenty of run support with David Buchanan on the mound for the Phillies. Strasburg is playable in all league formats tonight.
Pitcher Rating: 93.4
David Buchanan : FD: $4,000 — DK: $4,000

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.353 (Rank: 4) — Strikeout Rate: 23.1% (Rank: 26)
Pitches per PA: 3.79 (Rank: 21)
Analysis: Buchanan has not pitched well over the last two seasons, posting a 4.63 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 12.7%. He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Nationals, who have the fourth-highest team wOBA over the last two weeks of play. Buchanan doesn’t have enough upside to warrant consideration tonight.
Pitcher Rating: 21.8

Washington
The Nationals have a high team total tonight (4.75) as they square off against David Buchanan in Citizens Bank Park. Buchanan has not fared well against hitters from either side of the plate and he has given up 1.1 home runs per nine innings over the last two seasons.

Philadelphia
The Phillies carry very little fantasy appeal in cash games tonight, but they could be worth a look in the two big tournaments on FanDuel and DraftKings. Stephen Strasburg will give up a big outing to his opponent every now and then and next to no one will be on the Phillies’ offense tonight.

Analysis: Lester has not been in the best of form over the last month, posting a 3.56 SIERA (4.91 ERA) with a strikeout rate of 22.1%. He draws a mediocre matchup tonight against the Pirates, who are ranked 17th in team wOBA and 22nd in strikeout rate against left-handed pitching this season. Lester is worth a look in tournaments, but with so many great pitching options available tonight, he should be avoided in cash games.

Pitches per PA: 3.99 (Rank: 1)
Analysis: Happ has been in surprisingly good form, posting a 3.05 SIERA (0.88 ERA) with a strikeout rate of 25.7%. He could be a very sneaky play tonight against the Cubs, who are ranked 22nd in team wOBA and 30th in strikeout rate against left-handed pitching this season. Happ is a decent SP2 option on multi-pitcher sites, but I will likely limit my exposure to him in cash games.
Pitcher Rating: 68.9

Chicago Cubs
The Cubs draw a favorable matchup on paper, but J.A. Happ has been terrific over the last month of play. That doesn’t mean that we have to avoid the Cubs altogether though, as Happ has allowed a .318+ wOBA to hitters from both sides of the plate over the last two seasons.

Pittsburgh
The Pirates draw a difficult matchup against Jon Lester, but he is the worst pitcher in baseball at holding runners. If, and when, the Pirates get on base, they will look to be very aggressive on the base paths. Given their base-stealing ability, Andrew McCutchen, Gregory Polanco, and Josh Harrison are all on my radar in this one.

Analysis: Kelly may have a 1.67 ERA over the last month, but don’t fall for this trap. During that same stretch, he owns a 4.35 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 15.1%. He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Orioles, who have the fourth-highest team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. To make matters worse, Kelly has to face them on the road in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards.

Analysis: I have been avoiding Jimenez for the last couple of months and so far, it’s been a good strategy. His command has not been as sharp as it was earlier in the season, which has led to a lower strikeout rate and a higher walk rate. He should be avoided tonight against the Red Sox, who are ranked eighth in team wOBA and second in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.333 (Rank: 13) — Strikeout Rate: 17.0% (Rank: 4)
Pitches per PA: 3.90 (Rank: 4)
Analysis: Medlen hasn’t had as much success as a starter as he did out of the bullpen earlier in the season, but that’s often the case with pitchers. He’s not a pitcher that we can expect to pitch deep into a game, which does hurt his fantasy appeal in both cash games and tournaments. Medlen is cheap, but with a full slate of games, he’s not on my radar tonight against the Indians, who have the sixth-lowest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.

Analysis: Tomlin has been terrific over the last month, posting a 3.19 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 25.6%. The issue here isn’t form, it’s his matchup against the Royals. On the season, Kansas City is ranked fifth in team wOBA and first in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. There is more risk than potential reward for Tomlin tonight, especially at his elevated price point.

Pitches per PA: 3.83 (Rank: 14)
Analysis: Warren will draw the start for the Yankees tonight, but he is not expected to pitch deep into this game. He hasn’t thrown more than 50 pitches since June, so it would take a near perfect outing for him to even be eligible for the win tonight. For that reason, he should be avoided tonight against the Rays.

Pitches per PA: 3.90 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: Odorizzi has been sharp over the last month of play, posting a 3.29 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 26.9%. While his matchup against the Yankees appears tough on paper, their offense has been struggling and he gets to face them at home in the pitcher-friendly Tropicana Field. Odorizzi’s high price tag takes him out of consideration in cash, but he is one of my favorite pitchers to target in the two big tournaments on FanDuel and DraftKings tonight.

NY Yankees
The Yankees’ offense has been slumping recently and they have a low team total (3.62) tonight against Jake Odorizzi. Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner are viable value plays in the outfield, but they are secondary options at best tonight.

Tampa Bay
The Rays draw a mediocre matchup tonight against Adam Warren and the Yankees bullpen. Given their low team total (3.88) and the fact that they haven’t hit right-handed pitching well this season, they are secondary options at best tonight at home.
