Frankie Montas : FD: $3,000 — DK: $4,000
Detroit Tigers Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.319 (Rank: 10) — Strikeout Rate: 19.9% (Rank: 14)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.327 (Rank: 12) — Strikeout Rate: 21.1% (Rank: 15)
Pitches per PA: 3.84 (Rank: 11)
Analysis: Montas has made five appearances out of the bullpen this season, but he will make his first career major league start today against the Tigers. He is a large underdog against the Tigers, who are ranked above the league average in both team wOBA and strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. There is more risk than upside with Montas in his first ever major league start.

Pitches per PA: 3.79 (Rank: 20)
Analysis: Verlander has been in good form in the second half of the season. Over the last month of play, he has a 3.99 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 20.3%. He is a large favorite and he draws a nice matchup against the White Sox, who are ranked 22nd in team wOBA and 17th in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. I won’t be targeting him in the all-day contests, but he is certainly playable in the early slate.

Chicago White Sox
The White Sox draw a difficult matchup today against Justin Verlander, who has been a completely different pitcher in the last couple of months. Verlander is a reverse-splits pitcher though, allowing a .345 wOBA to right-handed hitters over the last two seasons. Jose Abreu and Melky Cabrera are both secondary options.

Analysis: Tropeano has not had a ton of success in the majors over the last two seasons, posting a 4.53 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 16.8%. He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Astros, who are ranked fourth in team wOBA and first in strikeout rate over the last two weeks of play. He should be avoided in both the early and the all-day slate of games.

Analysis: Fiers has really pitched well since coming to the Astros. Over the last month of play, he has a 3.95 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.5% over the last month of play. He draws a favorable matchup against the Angels, who are ranked 24th in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. He is a large favorite at home and he should see plenty of run support with Nick Tropeano pitching opposite him.

LA Angels
The Angels’ offense has disappeared over the last month of play. With the exception of Mike Trout, the rest of the team has been slumping for some time now. Analysis: Tillman has not been sharp recently, posting a 4.59 SIERA (7.76 ERA) with a strikeout rate of 15.4% over the last month of play. He draws a tough matchup tonight against the Nationals, who are ranked sixth in team wOBA over the last two weeks. These two teams have very different motivations right now and we should see that play out in tonight’s contest. Tillman can be avoided in all league formats.

Pitches per PA: 3.81 (Rank: 17)
Analysis: Scherzer has been giving up home runs at an unsustainable rate, which has been the main reason for his struggles since the All-Star break. Regression is bound to set in soon and it could very well start tonight against a strikeout-happy Orioles’ team. On the season, Baltimore has the third-highest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. He is the top-rated pitcher on the board tonight, the only question is how deep he will pitch into the game. The Nationals have been pinch-hitting for their starters much earlier in close games.
Pitcher Rating: 96.9

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.344 (Rank: 2) — Strikeout Rate: 19.8% (Rank: 8)
Pitches per PA: 3.85 (Rank: 10)
Analysis: Nova has not been the pitcher that the Yankees were hoping for him to be this season. He has really struggled in his recent starts, posting a 5.58 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 9.0% over the last month of play. He draws arguably the worst matchup on the board, as he has to face the Blue Jays in their own backyard. There is little to no fantasy appeal here. Nova should be avoided in both cash games and tournaments.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.294 (Rank: 27) — Strikeout Rate: 20.8% (Rank: 14)
Pitches per PA: 3.91 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: Stroman is coming off of a strong outing against the Red Sox, striking out three batters in seven innings of work. He has a ton of talent, the only question is whether he can put that talent on display in critical games down the stretch of the regular season. With so many aces on the mound tonight, it seems unnecessary to take the risk on Stroman. He is a tournament play at best tonight against the Yankees, who are ranked seventh in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season.

vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.293 (Rank: 30) — Strikeout Rate: 19.2% (Rank: 9)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.310 (Rank: 23) — Strikeout Rate: 19.4% (Rank: 6)
Pitches per PA: 3.72 (Rank: 29)
Analysis: Buchanan is an easy pitcher to avoid in daily fantasy. He has a mediocre SIERA (4.60) with a low strikeout rate (13.0%) and a high walk rate (7.4%). While he does draw a favorable matchup against the Marlins, that’s not enough to tip the scales in his favor. Even at his discounted price point, he can be avoided in both cash games and tournaments.
Pitcher Rating: 37.4
Adam Conley : FD: $6,400 — DK: $6,100
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 49.0 — SIERA: 4.05 — ERA: 4.22 — K%: 21.0% — BB%: 8.1% — HR/9: 1.1

Philadelphia Phillies Offense (2015)
vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.303 (Rank: 21) — Strikeout Rate: 21.8% (Rank: 19)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.251 (Rank: 30) — Strikeout Rate: 27.5% (Rank: 29)
Pitches per PA: 3.74 (Rank: 27)
Analysis: Conley has quietly pitched well for the Marlins over the last month of play, posting a 3.95 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 23.9%. He draws a favorable matchup against the Phillies, who have all but given up offensively this season. Philadelphia is ranked 30th in team wOBA and 29th in strikeout rate over the last two weeks. It feels a bit weird recommending a Marlins’ pitcher at this stage of the season, but Conley is a viable SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.
Pitcher Rating: 71.2

Philadelphia
The Phillies draw a mediocre matchup against Adam Conley, but they have to face him in the pitcher-friendly Marlins Park. At this point, it’s tough to rely on any production from this lineup. The Phillies should be considered secondary options at best.

Miami
The Marlins actually have a high team total tonight, as they host David Buchanan and the Phillies. Buchanan has not fared well against hitters from either side of the plate, allowing a .337+ wOBA to both left and right-handed hitters.
