Hey everyone, it’s the busy time of the year here at RotoGrinders and I’ll be writing the NBA Grind Down for this massive 13 game slate. In taking a quick look at the GPP’s on FanDuel and DraftKings, I was a bit disappointed with the size of the prize pools, but there are still some playable contests with significant prize money on the line. In the NBA right now, it’s important to know who is playing motivated basketball and more importantly, what players are seeing significant playing time or resting. I’m going to try and hone in on that information for you today to help you make the most informed decisions.

The first game is a big match up between two of the elite teams in the Eastern Conference. Toronto is currently the #1 seed but they still have something to play for as they are only two games up on the Celtics for home court throughout the playoffs. They are slight road underdogs and have the 5th highest total of the slate. The two teams play at an almost identical pace. The Raptors run a deep rotation with 10-11 players typically seeing playing time over the course of a game. Only two are usually guaranteed to see 30+ minutes and that’s Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan. Serge Ibaka is the most likely player after those two to see 30+ minutes (as long as he doesn’t get into foul trouble).

In a game with this high of a total, we’d typically want to target multiple players, but I’m having a hard time outside of DeMar DeRozan of wanting to roster anyone. Kyle Lowry is too expensive on DraftKings for his production. In his last three games, he’s put up just over 30 fantasy points a game and while he is capable of putting up 50+ on occasion and does get a nice matchup against a Cavaliers team that is 23rd in PG DvP, I can only list him as a secondary play on FanDuel where his price is more affordable. The opposite holds true for DeRozan who is too expensive on FanDuel, but more affordable on DraftKings. The Cavs are 2nd to last in SG DRPM, but outside of his last game where he put up a 50 fantasy point night, DeRozan had four straight games of under 35 fantasy points. The matchup and price on DK is good enough though to make him a secondary option as well.

The rest of the Raptors are meh in terms of DFS relevance. Serge Ibaka has a tough matchup as the Cavaliers are 2nd in PF DRPM and he’s the type of player that will rarely win you a GPP with a 40+ fantasy point outing of nowhere. With the addition of C.J. Miles, Fred VanVleet has seen his playing time take a substantial hit removing him from consideration. Jonas Valanciunas is a fpt/min beast but he only sees 20-25 minutes a game and can’t justify his mid $6K price tag.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Notable Injuries

George Hill (Out)
Kevin Love (Questionable)
Kyle Korver (Probable)

Cleveland enters tonight’s game 3rd in the Eastern Conference but they are only one game removed from being out of home court advantage in the first round so this game has significant meaning for them. Kevin Love surfaced on the injury report this morning with an illness so we’ll need to keep an eye on that later in the day, but I’m going to provide analysis with the assumption he does play. If he doesn’t play, it’s a usage bump to LeBron James and J.R. Smith, but not enough of one to make their DFS value stand out. The last time Love sat, Jeff Green played 32 minutes which would put him firmly in play as a value option at under $4,200 on both sites. I’ll list him as a secondary option with the Love out qualifier.

The Cavaliers offense and chances for success revolve around LeBron James, regardless of whether Kevin Love plays or not. That price tag of $12K plus though is hard to pay off. I mean you’re never going to be unhappy with a 60 fantasy point game but the risk of a game below 50 against a Raptors team that is 4th in SF DvP seems more probable than him putting up a GPP winning type score of 65+. I want to like Rodney Hood at his price, but he hasn’t topped 28 minutes or 23 fantasy points in his last four games and Kyle Korver is returning to action tonight which should limit his playing time even more. If Korver were out, he’d be in play on FanDuel but the hit to his playing time removes him from consideration for me.

George Hill remains out which means Jose Calderon and Jordan Clarkson will continue to split time at the PG position. Clarkson is the obvious better play of the two as he sees between 25-30 minutes of playing time a game, but he’s only topped 25 fantasy points once in his last five games and the Raptors are good at defending opposing PGs (9th in DvP and 3rd in DRPM). Larry Nance and Tristan Thompson would both be worth consideration if one of the two didn’t play, but as it is they both see no more than 22 minutes (the last five games). It seems weird to have no elite plays in a game with a 220+ total, and there is a strong likelihood one or two players will pop out of the woodwork and exceed expectations, but I just can’t find that obvious spot and I’m not going to try and guess which player it will be.

Brooklyn Nets

Notable Injuries

Allen Crabbe (Questionable)

The Nets visit the 76ers in the game that has the highest total of the slate at 224.with the Nets moderate road dogs with a reasonable 107 total. Both teams play at a fast pace with the Nets 6th in the league and the 76ers 3rd. With no Joel Embiid or Dario Saric for the 76ers, I expect the Nets to be able to keep the game moderately close and thus the potential for a shootout is there. It’ll be one of my favorite games to stack on this big slate.

One problem with the Nets is it’s difficult to trust what their Head Coach Kenny Smith is going to do. The other day he benched D’Angelo Russell and he ended up with only seven minutes of playing time. Spencer Dinwiddie played 35 minutes in that game, and then only 12 the next game. Jarrett Allen has seen games with just 19 and 21 minutes in the last five games, but also seen games with 26, 28, and 30. In those latter three games he put up at least 28 fantasy points. With no Embiid and at just $4,500 on DraftKings, I love Allen as a secondary option. Let’s just hope he gets the 26+ minutes of playing time.

DeMarre Carroll and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson are two players that get consistent minutes. Carroll is a better play on FanDuel and RJH a better option on DraftKings. Carroll is wildly inconsistent in his production as he’s put up a combined 30 fantasy points in his last two games after going for 36+ the previous two. RJH is more consistent and routinely tops the 30 fpt threshold, but at his price we’re going to need a game more like the 47.5 he had two games ago. Neither matchup screams must play however.

I’ll pass on D’Angelo Russell at his price facing a 76ers team that is 1st in PG DRPM. He has upside and might be worth a look if you’re doing a game stack, but he’s not going to be part of any core player pool for me given the matchup and volatility. Joe Harris and Caris LeVert are worth mentioning as players that get consistent minutes and have shown some upside in the past five games but like with Russell, I’d only include them as part of a game stack as there are plenty of options available on such a large slate.

Philadelphia 76ers

Notable Injuries

Dario Saric (Out)
Joel Embiid (Out)
Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot (Out)

The 76ers have the highest total of the slate and with both Dario Saric and Joel Embiid out, Ben Simmons is one of the top options of this slate, even at a price tag that is approaching $10K on both sites. With those two off the court, Simmons has a usage rate of 29.1% which is a 6.1% increase over his usage with them on the court. He’s put up 54 or more fantasy points in three of his last five games and faces a Nets team that is one of the worst in the league at defending PGs (28th in DvP, 29th in DRPM).

The other big beneficiary with those two out is Robert Covington who sees a 6.3% usage increase. Fresh off a 50 fantasy point game, he doesn’t have quite the matchup that Simmons has, but at just $6,100 on FanDuel and $6,000 on DraftKings is priced affordably enough to put him firmly in play. Amir Johnson saw 31 minutes of playing time last game and at $3,800 on DraftKings that screams like the type of player we’d want as a value option, but he only put up 18.25 fantasy points. That said though, he has shown fantasy point per minute upside the past five games (doing so on two different occasions) and should see close to 25 minutes which makes him worth the risk.

The last player to consider is Marco Belinelli. He’s played at least 25 minutes the last five games and has scored at least 22 fantasy points in four of those games including 28.75 and 27 the last two games out. At just $4,200 on both sites at a always thin SG position, he’s a fairly safe value option on both sites.

Atlanta Hawks

Notable Injuries

Deandre Bembry (Probable)

The Hawks are one of the worst (if not the worst) teams in the league, with nothing to play for, and facing a Miami team that is 7th or better in positional DvP at four of the five positions. It’s not the best matchup, but we’re always going to want to look for opportunities that stand out on teams evaluating new players or giving additional run to players that were previously role players.

The good thing with Atlanta is we know where the minutes are going to go. They run a consistent nine man rotation with their starting five generally in the 25-30 minute range and the bench players getting 15-25 minutes. With a tough defensive matchup, we’re going to want to look for outliers though if we’re going to consider rostering a Atlanta player. John Collins at first glance stands out due to his DraftKings price. He’s just $5,400 there and he’s put up at least 30 fantasy points his last two games. He’s not going to win you a GPP, but he’s a safe secondary option that should give you somewhere between 25-30 fantasy points.

Damion Lee would probably be worth a look on FanDuel if DeAndre Bembry were still out, but he’s expected to play tonight. Taurean Prince is vastly overpriced on both sites, especially considering he’s played 51 total minutes the last two games. Dewayne Dedmon has played at least 29 minutes his last five games and scored at least 29 fantasy points in four of the last five. Given how erratic the Heat are with utilizing Hassan Whiteside, he’s worth a look as a secondary option, although his upside is capped. Tyler Dorsey is cheap, but too inconsistent with a limited upside.

My favorite play on the Hawks is Mike Muscala. He’s under $4.3K on both sites and has played at least 25 minutes the last five games and scored 25 or more fantasy points in four of those five games.

Miami Heat

Notable Injuries

None

The Heat come into today’s game fairly secure in their playoff spot as they are the current #7 seed and four games up on the 9th seeded Pistons. They get a very favorable matchup against the woeful defense of Atlanta – the Hawks are bottom six in DvP against every single position.

The Heat give a boatload of minutes to three players – James Johnson, Josh Richardson, and Goran Dragic. Those three have not seen fewer than 29 minutes in any of the last five games and each have played at least 33 minutes on three different occasions during that time span. Richardson is the most affordably priced of those three and gets arguably the best matchup as the Hawks are dead last in SF DvP. He’s a great cash game play and a good secondary GPP option Even with the great matchup, I can’t justify paying the price for Dragic. He hasn’t topped 35 fpts in any of his last five games. Johnson isn’t much better, but he has scored 37+ in two of his last three and is worth a look.

The problem with the Heat players in terms of DFS is that they all put up pretty safe numbers for you, but they never really give you the kind of score you’re going to need to win a contest. Kelly Olynyk and Dwyane Wade are both too expensive for their price tags, Justise Winslow has limited upside despite consistent playing time and production, and Wayne Ellington and Tyler Johnson are wildly inefficient. The one player who does have the kind of GPP winning upside on the Heat is Hassan Whiteside, but for some reason Erik Spoelstra hates him. He’s played 20 minutes and 19 minutes his last two games since returning from injury and voiced complaints about that playing time. If I knew he were going to get 35 minutes, he’d be an elite option at under $7,500 on both sites. That said, I think he’s worth a GPP risk just in case Spoelstra decides to get his head out of his you know what.

Orlando Magic

Notable Injuries

Jonathan Isaaac (Out)

In a game that means absolutely nothing between two of the worst teams in the league, we’ll want to look solely for players expected to get significant playing time at prices that justify rostering them. For the Magic that removes most players from consideration. Nikola Vucevic is a fine play but at between $8,500 and $9,000 he’d need to put up 50+ fantasy points to be a good play and he’s done that just once in the last five games. He does get to face Kyle O’Quinn though so he’s at least worth consideration as a secondary option.

Aaron Gordon has one game with more than 34 fantasy points in his last five games. It’s hard to justify paying $8K+ for that (even if that one game was a 60+ fantasy point outing). Jonathan Isaac is out which is a bump for Mario Hezonja. The last two games Isaac missed, Hezonja saw 36 and 39 minutes of playing time and put up nearly 80 fantasy points. He’s definitely in play at $5,700 on both sites.

The one other Orlando player to consider is D.J. Augustin. The point guard has played at least 32 minutes in the teams last four games and has scored 30 or more fantasy points three of those games. He’s very affordably priced at $5,500 on FanDuel and $5,900 on DraftKings.

New York Knicks

Notable Injuries

Troy Williams (Out)
Enes Kanter (Doubtful)
Michael Beasley (Questionable)
Courtney Lee (Probable)
Frank Ntilikina (Probable)

Troy Williams is out for the season and Enes Kanter is unlikely to play. That’s the bad news on the injury front for the Knicks, but they will see the return of Courtney Lee and Frank Ntilikina tonight which will thin out the guard minutes.

Michael Beasley is questionable, but if he is able to go he’s in play at under $7.1K on both sites. He’s put up at least 39.5 fantasy points his last three games. Rostering Kyle O’Quinn is never fun, but with Kanter out it’s something we have to consider. He put up 30+ fantasy points in 32 minutes last game with Kanter out.

Tim Hardaway consistently puts up 25+ fantasy points, but that isn’t enough production at his price tag. The same can not be said for Trey Burke who was the massive chalk three games ago and paid off for everyone and followed that up with another impressive outing his last game out. Now he gets to face a Magic team that is dead last in PG DvP. Even at his much increased price, I can only say yes please (especially if Beasley happens to sit). That’s the extent of my interest in New York players.

Charlotte Hornets

Notable Injuries

Dwayne Bacon (Out)
Treveon Graham (Out)
Nicolas Batum (Questionable)
Jeremy Lamb (Probable)

Charlotte has been eliminated from the playoffs and are playing merely for pride now. Nicolas Batum was ruled out earlier in the day but after testing things out in shootaround is now a game-time decision. It’s a situation to monitor, but I find it unlikely that he’ll play given there is nothing to play for.

I’m going to have to speed things up (spent way more time researching this slate than I thought it would take and now I’m pressed for time), so I’m just going to do a quick look at the key players for each team moving forward and their viability.

Marvin Williams – consistent but no upside
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist – with Bacon and Graham out (and perhaps Batum), if he gets 30+ minutes again at his current price, he’s a secondary option.
Dwight Howard – way too expensive despite a juicy matchup, He hasn’t topped 45 fantasy points in his last four games.
Kemba Walker – has been terrible of late not going over 30 fantasy points in his last three games. He’s priced over $8K on both sites.
Frank Kaminsky – not enough production
Willy Hernangomez – not enough minutes, but intriguing enough to be a GPP option if the team continues to give him around 20 minutes a game or more.
Jeremy Lamb – too expensive for his production
Malik Monk – secondary option if Batum is out

Chicago Bulls

Notable Injuries

Paul Zipser (Out)

The Bulls also have nothing to play for than pride. Their last two games they have ran 11-12 deep with no player topping 27 minutes. This looks like how they will operate the rest of the season which removes their top priced players like Lauri Markkanen, Denzel Valentine, Cameron Payne, Bobby Portis, and Noah Vonleh.

Jerian Grant at $4K on DraftKings is a secondary option. He’s played 26 minutes the last two games and scored 25+ fantasy points last time out. Sean Kilpatrick is as streaky as they come but at $3,600 on FanDuel and $3,400 on DraftKings he is in play. He has 46 fantasy points in 49 minutes his last two games for the team.
