MLB Grind Down: Thursday, August 27th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.310 (Rank: 23) — Strikeout Rate: 21.2% (Rank: 18)
Pitches per PA: 3.77 (Rank: 23)
Analysis: Greinke is one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. He has been in good form coming into today’s start, posting a 3.30 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 23.6% over the last month of play. He draws a decent matchup against the Reds, who are ranked 23rd in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. Cincinnati doesn’t strikeout all that often, but we are less concerned with that when we have elite strikeout pitchers on the mound. Run support should come in groves for Greinke, as Anthony Desclafani is pitching opposite him.
Pitcher Rating: 95.7
Anthony Desclafani : FD: $6,500 — DK: $8,200
Pitching Stats:

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.294 (Rank: 30) — Strikeout Rate: 23.3% (Rank: 25)
Pitches per PA: 3.88 (Rank: 5)
Analysis: Desclafani has been a serviceable starter for the Reds, but he’s rarely a target in daily fantasy baseball. He has a mediocre SIERA with a below-average strikeout rate. He draws a difficult matchup today against the Dodgers, who are ranked third in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. The Dodgers also average the fifth-most pitches per plate appearance, which helps drive up opposing pitch counts. Desclafani should be avoided in an early slate that actually has some nice pitching options.

LA Dodgers
The Dodgers are one of the best offenses in baseball when facing a right-handed pitcher. They draw a favorable matchup against Anthony Desclafani and they get to face him in the hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark. The left-handed hitters have the edge in this matchup, but don’t rule out Yasiel Puig, who is riding a nine-game hitting streak.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.353 (Rank: 5) — Strikeout Rate: 19.8% (Rank: 12)
Pitches per PA: 3.84 (Rank: 11)
Analysis: Shoemaker will draw the start today in place of Andrew Heaney. He is likely doing Heaney a favor, as very few pitchers find success against the Tigers in Comerica Park. Shoemaker has good numbers over the last two seasons, but he is inconsistent and he draws one of the toughest matchups on the board. Detroit is ranked fourth in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. I want no part of a pitcher facing Miguel Cabrera and company, especially in Detroit.

Analysis: Wolf may have mediocre numbers over the last two seasons, but the sample size is small. The fact of the matter is that he is well past his prime. There should be plenty of runs to go around in this one, as the game features the second-highest run total of any game in the early slate. There is very little upside against a team that has the fourth-lowest strikeout rate against left-handed pitching this season.

The Angels have one of the highest team totals on the board today, as they square off against Randy Wolf in Comerica Park. Analysis: Estrada may have a 2.37 ERA over the last month of play, but his peripheral statistics tell another story. During that stretch, he has a 4.87 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 18.1%. He draws a difficult matchup against the Rangers, who are ranked seventh in team wOBA and ninth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. Estrada should be avoided in what is expected to be the highest scoring game of the afternoon.

Analysis: Gallardo has not been in great form recently, posting a 4.79 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 11.4% over the last month of play. If you can’t strikeout batters at an elite rate, you are likely going to struggle against the Blue Jays, who are ranked second in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. I may not recommend another pitcher facing Toronto for the rest of the season.

The Blue Jays seem to score ten or more runs almost every night now. While this is a day game, that shouldn’t make much of a difference. They draw a favorable matchup against the struggling Yovani Gallardo and they get to face him in the hitter-friendly Globe Life Park. Once again, get as many Blue Jays’ hitters into your lineup as your budget will allow.

With a ton of attention being paid to the Blue Jays and Tigers this afternoon, the Rangers’ offense may fly under the radar a bit. Analysis: Tillman is a pitcher that rarely finds himself onto any of my DFS rosters. He just doesn’t have the strikeout potential that I usually look for in a pitcher. Over the last month of play, Tillman has a 4.38 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 13.8%. Add in a matchup against the Royals and he becomes an easy pitcher to avoid in the early slate. His command and temper are always a concern, but he draws a plus-matchup in terms of potential strikeouts today against the Orioles. On the season, Baltimore has the third-highest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. While I wouldn’t use him in cash games, he does have some tournament appeal in the early slate.

The Royals are sizable favorites at home against Chris Tillman, although the total for the game is only set at 7.0 runs. Analysis: Haren has not been on my radar very often this season and that’s not going to change anytime soon. He has a mediocre SIERA with a below-average strikeout rate. He draws a difficult matchup today against the Giants, who are ranked sixth in team wOBA and fifth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. He is a large underdog on the road that should be avoided in all league formats.

vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.307 (Rank: 17) — Strikeout Rate: 24.4% (Rank: 30)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.379 (Rank: 3) — Strikeout Rate: 24.9% (Rank: 29)
Pitches per PA: 3.99 (Rank: 1)
Analysis: Bumgarner has been tremendous in his recent outings, posting a 1.95 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 33.3% and a walk rate of 1.4% over the last month of play. While the Cubs take a lot of pitches, they also strikeout at the highest rate of any team in baseball. Bumgarner throws a ton of strikes, which should help him in this matchup. He is right there with Zack Greinke as the top pitching option on the board today. If I had to choose, I’d give a small edge to Bumgarner since he is pitching at home.
Pitcher Rating: 97.4

Chicago Cubs
The Cubs should not be on your radar today. They draw one of the worst matchups in all of baseball, as they have to face Madison Bumgarner in the pitcher-friendly AT&T Park.

San Francisco
The Giants may not have the highest team total on the board, but they do draw a favorable matchup against Dan Haren, who has given up a ton of home runs over the last few seasons. Haren doesn’t fare well against left or right-handed hitters, so batters from both sides of the plate are in play here.
