Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.295 (Rank: 21) — Strikeout Rate: 20.2% (Rank: 13)
Pitchers per PA: 3.73 (Rank: 24)
Analysis: Hammel is one of the best non-big name pitchers in all of baseball. Since the start of the 2014 season, he owns a 3.32 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 23.4%. He’s a small favorite tonight against the Reds, but this game has a high total of 8.5 runs. His strikeout potential is somewhat limited thanks to the fact that the Reds have the sixth-lowest strikeout rate (18.5%) against right-handed pitching this season. I like the price on Hammel, but I’d rather pay up for Jacob deGrom against the Nationals.
Pitcher Rating:80.4
Raisel Iglesias : FD: $6,100 — DK: $4,300
Pitching Stats:

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.281 (Rank: 27) — Strikeout Rate: 24.2% (Rank: 29)
Pitchers per PA: 3.98 (Rank: 1)
Analysis: Iglesias has given up a ton of runs this season. He may not have pitched as bad as the ERA would suggest, but he’s still a very risky fantasy option at this point. Even though he draws a favorable matchup against the Cubs, I will be avoiding Iglesias tonight. I would rather target a number of other pitchers at this price point (Aaron Nola, Joe Ross, Brian Johnson, etc.).

Chicago Cubs
Despite all of the young talent in their lineup, the Cubs are still one of the worst offenses in baseball. The good news is that they draw a favorable matchup against Raisel Iglesias in the hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark. The left-handed bats have a huge advantage in this matchup, as Iglesias has given up a .370 wOBA to hitters from that side of the plate.

The Reds draw a difficult matchup tonight against Jason Hammel, who has held left and right-handed hitters under a .300 wOBA over the last two seasons. Vegas does expect them to score some runs tonight, but there are better matchups to exploit. I will be fading the Reds in both cash games and tournaments.

Pitchers per PA: 3.85 (Rank: 9)
Analysis: Johnson is another pitcher that will be making his major league debut tonight. He was the 31st pick in the 2012 draft. He is considered a top prospect, although most expect him to be more of a back-end starter. He has drawn comparisons to Mark Buehrle, because he is a craft left-handed pitcher. Johnson draws a tough matchup in his debut, as the Astros are ranked seventh in wOBA (.318) against southpaws this season. I’m giving the edge to Aaron Nola over Johnson tonight, as he draws the better matchup of the two.

Analysis: Velasquez hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype thus far, but he continues to improve. His command has been better in recent starts and he has now held opponents to two earned runs or less in three of his last four starts. Tonight he faces a Red Sox offense that has disappeared in recent weeks. Their last known whereabouts are unknown, as they are ranked dead last in team wOBA during that stretch. Velasquez is a decent tournament option tonight.

The Red Sox have struggled to score runs recently, but they draw a decent matchup tonight against Vincent Velasquez in the hitter-friendly Minute Maid Park. The Astros are always in play when there is a left-handed pitcher on the mound, especially one that is as inexperienced as Brian Johnson. As I always say, it’s difficult to predict how these major league debuts are going to go, but I have to side with the Astros in this one. All of the right-handed bats in this lineup are in play and they make a sneaky stack if you want to go the contrarian non-Coors route.

Analysis: Wacha may have a 4.50 ERA over the last month of play, but his indicators suggest that he’s pitching much better than that. During that stretch, he has a 2.91 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.2%. His price is very reasonable across the industry and he draws a favorable matchup against the White Sox, who are ranked 24th in wOBA (.297) and 13th in strikeout rate (19.6%) against right-handed pitching this season. I have a feeling he will get overlooked tonight, but he’s a strong play against the White Sox.

Pitchers per PA: 3.78 (Rank: 19)
Analysis: We keep waiting for that absolutely dominant performance from Rodon. He is a top prospect that has had good, but not great success in the majors thus far. His biggest issue has been his command. He has walked nearly 14% of the batters that he has faced this season. That’s a big red flag for me, as it increases his pitch count and his likeliness to give up runs. As soon as he can show better control, he’ll get the green light from me.

The Cardinals are one of the worst hitting teams against left-handed pitching. While that’s a bit concerning, we don’t target full teams in DFS, we target individual players. Analysis: With only a select few aces on the mound tonight, Cole would typically be one of the top pitching options. Unfortunately, he has to take his turn at the Kansas City Royals, who continue to be a pain in the side of many starting pitchers. The Royals have by far the lowest strikeout rate of any team, which really limits a pitcher’s upside against them. Cole is overpriced for his matchup tonight.

Analysis: Salazar has an ERA that is higher than his SIERA, which keeps his price at a very playable level across the industry. He has one of the highest strikeout rates in baseball, which always puts him in play. The issue tonight is his matchup. The Brewers’ offense has been on fire recently, as they are ranked fourth in wOBA (.341) and third in strikeout rate (17.2%) over the last 14 days of play. Milwaukee
The Brewers draw a difficult matchup against Danny Salazar, but at least they get to face him at home. It likely won’t hurt to avoid Milwaukee altogether, but Gerardo Parra is a decent play tonight. Over the last two weeks, he has a .465 wOBA and an uncharacteristic .357 ISO.
