MLB Grind Down: Wednesday, July 22nd
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.298 (Rank: 18) — Strikeout Rate: 20.9% (Rank: 17)
Pitchers per PA: 3.78 (Rank: 20)
Analysis: Bolsinger takes the mound for the Dodgers in their day game against the Braves. He has pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 3.28 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22.2%. He draws a favorable matchup against Atlanta, who is ranked 20th in wOBA (.305) against right-handed pitching. The one concern here is that the Braves have one of the lowest strikeout rates of any team this season, which does limit Bolsinger’s upside.
Pitcher Rating:79.5
Julio Teheran : FD: $8,100 — DK: $7,100
Pitching Stats:

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.328 (Rank: 8) — Strikeout Rate: 21.0% (Rank: 19)
Pitchers per PA: 3.88 (Rank: 5)
Analysis: Teheran has pitched significantly better at home than he has on the road. In his career, he owns a 3.31 FIP with a 23.2% strikeout rate at home compared to a 4.41 FIP and a strikeout rate of 18.0% on the road. Today’s game will be at home, but unfortunately, it will be against a very tough Dodgers’ offense. On the season, Los Angeles is ranked second in wOBA (.335) against right-handed pitching. There are better options at pitcher in the early slate of games.

LA Dodgers
Even though I won’t be targeting Julio Teheran against the Dodgers, I’m not going to have a ton of exposure to the Dodgers’ hitters either. This is a pitcher’s ballpark and the game has a low run total. However, if you are targeting any hitters here, target the ones that can hit from the left side of the plate. Teheran has given up a .326 wOBA to left-handed hitters over the last two seasons.

Atlanta
The Braves will score some runs every now and then, but they are still a below-average offense that is missing their best hitter. They draw a difficult matchup against Mike Bolsinger, who has actually pitched very well this season. The left-handed hitters in this lineup do deserve a look though, as Bolsinger has given up a .349 wOBA to hitters from that side of the plate.

Pitchers per PA: 3.73 (Rank: 24)
Analysis: Hendricks has been sharp in his recent outings, posting a 3.51 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 17.6%. His ERA is actually lower than his SIERA is, which is surprising since no one ever talks about him as a viable fantasy option. The issue that I have with Hendricks today is his matchup. The Reds are a competent offense that has the sixth-lowest strikeout rate (17.6%) against right-handed pitching this season. This is expected to be a high-scoring game, as it takes place in the hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark.

Analysis: Leake has been extremely inconsistent this season, but he is starting to turn things around. Over his last three starts, he has only given up a combined four earned runs while striking out 16 batters. He draws a plus-matchup today against the Cubs, who are ranked 23rd in wOBA (.298) and 29th in strikeout rate (24.6%) against right-handed pitching. The one area of concern is that the Cubs have some talented left-handed hitters in their lineup.

Since the start of the 2014 season, Mike Leake has given up a .343 wOBA to left-handed hitters. The Reds draw a difficult matchup against Kyle Hendricks, who has held left and right-handed hitters under a .300 wOBA over the last two seasons. Analysis: Syndergaard is enjoying a terrific rookie seasons. In his first 73 innings of work, he has a 2.96 SIERA with an impressive strikeout rate of 25.9%. He has also shown great command, walking only 5.0% of the batters that he has faced. He draws a favorable matchup today against the depleted Nationals, who are ranked 29th in wOBA (.252) and 30th in strikeout rate (27.5%) over the last 14 days of play. Syndergaard may be a small underdog in this game, but he has the most upside of any pitcher in the early slate of games.

Pitchers per PA: 3.86 (Rank: 8)
Analysis: Zimmermann hasn’t had the same success that he did in 2014, but he finally appears to be rounding into form. Over the last month of play, he has a 3.54 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 19.4% and a walk rate of 1.6%. When he is throwing strike after strike after strike, he is able to pitch deep into games. He draws arguably the best matchup on the board today, as he faces a Mets’ offense that is ranked 29th in wOBA (.290) and 20th in strikeout rate (20.3%) against right-handed pitching. He may not have as much upside as Syndergaard, but he has a slightly better chance of picking up that elusive win.

The Mets’ offense scored some runs last night after pinch-hitting for Jacob deGrom after only 82 pitches (angry emoji!!). In the end, it worked out well for the Mets though, as Eric Campbell drove in two runs that put them ahead. Even though they put up some runs last night, they are still one of the worst offenses in baseball. They should continue to be avoided today against Jordan Zimmermann and the Nationals.

Washington
This game is expected to be a pitcher’s duel. We have arguably the top two pitching options in the early slate of games squaring off against one another in a pitcher-friendly ballpark. Bryce Harper has the ability to homer off of anyone, but if I’m paying up for a hitter, I’d much rather pay up for one that is playing in Coors Field. Once again, I’ll be fading the depleted Nationals in both cash games and tournaments.

Analysis: Odorizzi has struggled since coming back from injury, but that’s too small of a sample size to trust. Since the start of last season, he owns a 3.72 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22.7%. He has always had better numbers at home than he has on the road, but hopefully a matchup against the hapless Phillies will help solve that problem. Philadelphia is still ranked dead last in wOBA (.285) against right-handed pitching this season. This could be a great opportunity to buy low on Odorizzi.

He doesn’t carry a ton of upside though and he draws a difficult matchup against the Rays, who actually hit left-handed pitching well as a team. Analysis: Anderson may own a 0.89 ERA through his first 30 innings in the majors, but don’t buy in on the hype until we get a larger sample size. His indicators tell another story, as he owns an average SIERA of 4.45 with a below-average strikeout rate of 10.3%. I like to compare him to Chi Chi Gonzalez, who had a similar start to his major league career, only to get blown up a few starts later. Batter Grind Down
Cleveland
The Indians’ offense has really let us down in big spots this season, but they are a sneaky offense to target in the early slate, especially on FanDuel since they don’t have the Coors game in that set of leagues. Kyle Lohse has given up a .335+ wOBA to left and right-handed hitters this season and he gives up a ton of home runs.

Milwaukee
The Brewers may not have the best matchup on paper, but again, regression is going to set in for Cody Anderson in the near future. His SIERA suggests that he has been an average pitcher thus far. This could be a great time to target the Brewers’ hitters on a day when they will likely get overlooked. Red-hot Gerardo Parra is the top target here, but Adam Lind and Jonathan Lucroy are also in play.
