Cory Schneider stopped 32 shots last night to lead the Devils to a 2-1 victory over the Florida Panthers last night in front of the home crowd. They now head to Chicago to take on a Blackhawk team that has been keeping their heads above water. The return of Kyle Palmieri was a welcome sight last night as he was able to get his second power play goal of the season on a unit that hadn’t scored in the last five games. Palmieri has only suited up for nine games this season but has seen four of his eight points come with the man advantage. Taylor Hall joins him on the top line and top power play unit while Nico Hischier rounds out the team’s best scoring line when the team is in a 5×5 situation. Hall leads the team with 17 points through 16 games so look for Chicago to try and stop his line tonight. Adam Henrique, Jesper Bratt and Drew Stafford skate on the second line so it would make sense to try and target a few plays from this unit. Henrique sees a little more time with the extra attacker but it’s been Bratt who has been the most productive with two goals and nine assists so far this season. Brian Gibbons looks to be the one-off here as he has lit the lamp seven times which isn’t bad for a third liner on this team. Defensemen Will Butcher has jumped out to a good start as he has notched eight of his 13 assists when the Devils have had the man advantage. John Moore and Damon Severson would be the other options from the New Jersey blue line but both would be a roll of the dice at this juncture. The Devils look to improve on their 5-1-1 road record and will need both lines to score a few goals to accomplish that feat.
It took an extra period for the Blackhawks to beat the Carolina Hurricanes by a score of 4-3 on the visiting team’s sheet of ice last night. Alex Debrincat pumped in two goals while skating on two different lines as head coach Joel Quenneville was in full desperation mode after Carolina jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Jonathan Toews, Brandon Saad and Richard Panik started out as the ‘top’ line while Artem Anisimov has been skating with Patrick Kane and Nick Schmaltz. The Toews line is listed as the ‘top’ line but we all know that whatever line Kane is on should be the line the opposing teams try to shut down. Kane’s 10 assists and 15 points lead a Chicago team that has scored 48 goals in the first 17 games. Kane’s line also sees over 50% of the ice time when the Blackhawks have the man advantage and are joined by Saad and defensemen Cody Franson. Defenseman Duncan Keith is the clear choice on the back line however but even he is off to a sluggish start with just eight assists so far this season. Brent Seabrook and Jan Rutta have also chipped in six points apiece from the blue line so if you are looking for a little salary relief the latter seems to be a decent choice without giving up too much. Chicago will try to up their record to 5-3-1 in front of the home crowd tonight.
