MLB Grind Down: Friday, June 26th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.
Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.375 (Rank: 1) — Strikeout Rate: 18.7% (Rank: 12)
Pitchers per PA: 3.80 (Rank: 15)
Analysis: Kluber has had a couple of bad outings recently, but his numbers still resemble that of an ace. Over the last month, he has a 3.44 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.6%. Kluber has great strikeout potential against the Orioles (ranked 27th in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching), but the matchup is less than ideal. Baltimore is the hottest offense in baseball right now and Kluber has to face them in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards. You can never completely rule out Kluber, but there are safer options for cash games tonight.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.280 (Rank: 27) — Strikeout Rate: 20.4% (Rank: 19)
Pitchers per PA: 3.93 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: Chen has pitched very well in his recent starts, posting a 2.90 SIERA with an impressive strikeout rate of 26.6%. He has always been an above-average pitcher, he just hasn’t had that elite strikeout rate. On paper, you would think that a left-handed pitcher would have the platoon advantage over a left-handed heavy Indians’ lineup, but that hasn’t been the case this season. The Indians are ranked eighth in wOBA (.318) with the second-lowest strikeout rate of any team against left-handed pitching this season.
Pitcher Rating:56.4
Batter Grind Down
Cleveland
As I mentioned above, the Indians’ lineup is full of left-handed hitters. However, with the addition of Francisco Lindor, they actually have a few decent right-handed batters to throw at Wei-Yin Chen. The hitters from the right side of the plate do have the advantage in this matchup, as Chen has given up a .324 wOBA to righties in the past two seasons.

Baltimore
Corey Kluber hasn’t been as sharp in his last few starts, but even on his off days, he is still better than most pitchers in the major leagues. The Orioles’ offense has been on fire over the past few weeks, but this is a case where the best decision may be to avoid both the pitcher and the team that he is facing. There are better matchups on the schedule tonight.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.302 (Rank: 22) — Strikeout Rate: 17.7% (Rank: 9)
Pitchers per PA: 3.72 (Rank: 26)
Analysis: Scherzer is coming off of a historical two-game stretch, where he struck out 26 batters in back-to-back complete game shutouts. The odds are against him, but he certainly has the matchup to make it three complete game shutouts in a row. The Phillies are ranked dead last in wOBA (.279) against right-handed pitching and they average the fifth-fewest pitches per plate appearance. Scherzer is obviously the top rated pitcher on the board tonight, but can you justify paying that expensive price tag? Targeting Scherzer leaves you with an average remaining salary per player of $2,813 on FanDuel and $4,000 on DraftKings.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.344 (Rank: 8) — Strikeout Rate: 17.5% (Rank: 8)
Pitchers per PA: 3.73 (Rank: 25)
Analysis: Harang has not pitched well in his recent starts, posting a 4.62 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 16.3%. He is a streaky pitcher that is currently in less than stellar form. While the Nationals’ offense is ranked right around the major league average in wOBA (.320) against right-handed pitching, they should be able to get to Harang tonight. Add in the fact that he will see little to no run support tonight, and Harang is an easy pitcher to avoid in all league formats.
Pitcher Rating:49.2

Washington
Since the start of last season, Aaron Harang has allowed a .326 wOBA to left-handed hitters. Even though this game has one of the lowest run totals on the board, the Nationals have the 17th highest team total, which isn’t terrible. Bryce Harper deserves consideration as an elite play, while Denard Span and Anthony Rendon are also in play as secondary options.

Philadelphia
Max Scherzer has had one of the best two-game stretches in the history of baseball. He is going for his third straight complete game shutout tonight. The Phillies’ offense has been a thorn in the side of us DFS players recently, but they are still the worst hitting team against right-handed pitching. It’s hard to see Philadelphia putting up much of a fight tonight against Scherzer.

Analysis: Perez is a young pitcher that has struggled with his command in his first season as a major leaguer. On the season, he has a 4.35 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 18.8% and a walk rate of 10.9%. We like to see consistency from our starting pitching and that’s just not something that Perez provides. He should be avoided tonight against a Pirates’ offense that is very talented, but underperforming this season.

Analysis: Liriano has been terrific in his recent starts, posting a 1.84 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 32.0% over the last month. The most impressive statistic during that stretch may be his walk rate of 3.9%. Liriano with an improved command is a scary proposition for his opponents. Liriano draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Braves, who are ranked 29th in wOBA (.282) and 23rd in strikeout rate (23.3%) against left-handed pitching this season. Liriano also gets to face the Braves at home in the pitcher-friendly confines of PNC Park.

Atlanta
The Braves’ offense was average at best with Freddie Freeman in the lineup. Without Freeman, they have one of the least potent offenses in all of baseball. Francisco Liriano pitches well at PNC Park and he has been very efficient against right-handed hitters over the last two seasons, holding them to a .268 wOBA. The Braves should be avoided tonight in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh
The Pirates come into tonight’s game with the ninth-highest team total on the board. They draw a favorable matchup against Williams Perez, who has a bad habit of giving his opponents free base passes. The left-handed hitters have the splits in their favor tonight, but the right-handed bats are in play as well. The Pirates’ offense has let us down a lot this season, but they are in a great spot tonight at home.

If there was ever a spot for the Blue Jays to score 100 runs, this would be it. Toronto is ranked fourth in wOBA (.331) against right-handed pitching and fourth in wOBA (.360) over the last 14 days. Analysis: We go from one low-strikeout pitcher in Nick Martinez, to another one in Mark Buehrle. Since the start of 2014, Buehrle has only struck out 13.2% of the batters that he has faced. Buehrle has a much lower SIERA than Martinez, but his strikeout potential is nearly identical. The Rangers have not hit left-handed pitching well this season, but there is no reason to target Buehrle tonight in one of the best hitter’s parks in all of baseball.

Even though the Rangers have one of the lowest team wOBAs against left-handed pitching this season, this is a matchup that should fit their eye. Since the start of 2014, Mark Buehrle has given up a .323+ wOBA to hitters from both sides of the plate. The right-handed hitters in this lineup are the preferred targets, but the left-handed bats are also in play tonight.

Pitchers per PA: 3.84 (Rank: 9)
Analysis: Quintana has been very up and down this season. He started the season off slowly, finally regained his form, and now he is struggling again. Over the last month, he has a mediocre 4.23 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 17.6%. Tonight he runs into the buzzsaw that is the Tigers’ offense. Detroit is ranked second in wOBA (.337) against left-handed pitching and seventh in wOBA (.334) at home this season. Quintana should be avoided in all league formats.

Chicago White Sox Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.296 (Rank: 23) — Strikeout Rate: 19.1% (Rank: 11)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.280 (Rank: 27) — Strikeout Rate: 20.2% (Rank: 18)
Pitchers per PA: 3.74 (Rank: 22)
Analysis: Sanchez has an ERA that is a full run higher than his SIERA. When that happens to a pitcher, his price on DFS sites is typically lower than it should be, as the earned runs count against him. Sanchez is an affordable pitching option tonight at home against the White Sox, who are ranked 23rd in wOBA (.296) and 27th in wOBA (.280) over the last 14 days. Sanchez is a large favorite with decent strikeout potential. He deserves consideration in both cash games and tournaments tonight.

Chicago White Sox
As crazy as it sounds, the White Sox have the third-fewest home runs of any team in the majors this season. They don’t hit left or right-handed pitching particularly well and they draw a difficult matchup tonight against Anibal Sanchez. Jose Abreu and Adam Eaton have both been hitting the ball well recently, but both are secondary options tonight on the road.

Detroit
The Tigers get to face Jose Quintana at the right time. He comes into tonight’s game in less than stellar form. The Tigers are one of the best offenses in baseball against left-handed pitching and they should find some success tonight at home, as their lineup may exclusively feature right-handed bats.
