Pitchers per PA: 3.89 (Rank: 5)
Analysis: Chavez has been a serviceable starter for the A’s, but he has given up at least three earned runs in five of his last six starts. He has decent strikeout potential, but he draws a tough matchup against the Yankees. On the season, New York is ranked fifth in wOBA (.327) and seventh in strikeout rate (18.9%) against right-handed pitching. Even though there are only three games in the early slate, Chavez is still an easy pitcher to avoid. Masahiro Tanaka and Yordano Ventura are both better options.
Pitcher Rating:56.7
Masahiro Tanaka : FD: $9,500 — DK: $10,600
Pitching Stats:

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.302 (Rank: 17) — Strikeout Rate: 18.3% (Rank: 7)
Pitchers per PA: 3.88 (Rank: 7)
Analysis: Tanaka has given up at least three earned runs in each of his last three starts, but his indicators suggest positive regression should be right around the corner. Over the last month of play, Tanaka has a 3.15 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 21.7%. His matchup against the A’s is a difficult one, but we can’t be very picky with only three games on tap in the early slate. Tanaka is affordable and is the top play in the “early only” leagues. He is an average option in the “all-day” formats.
Pitcher Rating:83.5
Batter Grind Down
Oakland
The A’s hit right-handed pitching well as a team, but they find themselves in a tough matchup against Masahiro Tanaka, who has held left and right-handed hitters under a .305 wOBA. The A’s do see a positive ballpark shift playing in Yankee Stadium, but they are secondary fantasy options at their respective positions.

NY Yankees
The Yankees’ offense has been ice cold over the last two weeks, but they have a good chance to turn it around today against Jesse Chavez. While Chavez is a very capable pitcher, he has had his struggles with left-handed hitters. Not only do the Yankees have a lineup chock full of lefties, but they also have the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.305 (Rank: 14) — Strikeout Rate: 17.1% (Rank: 4)
Pitchers per PA: 3.66 (Rank: 30)
Analysis: Karns is hoping to avoid what happened to Chris Archer last night. If you tried to get cute by targeting Archer over Clayton Kershaw, you were likely regretting your decision very early on. The Royals are an offense that can turn great pitchers into average ones. Karns has pitched well for the Rays this season, but this matchup is less than ideal. Kansas City has the lowest strikeout rate of any team against right-handed pitching this season.
Pitcher Rating:64.3
Yordano Ventura : FD: $8,200 — DK: $8,200

Pitchers per PA: 3.86 (Rank: 9)
Analysis: Ventura is making his first start in the better part of a month, after being placed on the DL with a hand injury. He didn’t have any issues in his rehab start and even though he’s not going to throw 110 pitches today, his pitch count shouldn’t be an issue. Given the lack of options, Ventura is the second-best pitching option in the early slate of games. He draws a favorable matchup against the Rays, who are ranked 25th in wOBA (.294) and 26th in strikeout rate (22.2%) against right-handed pitching this season.

The Rays have the lowest team total of any team that is playing in the three-game early slate. They draw a difficult matchup against Yordano Ventura, who has held left and right-handed hitters under a .310 wOBA. Kansas City
The Royals are looking to head into the All-Star break the same way that they started the season: by scoring runs in bunches. After a big outing against Chris Archer last night, they draw a much better matchup against his teammate Nate Karns. Karns doesn’t give up a high wOBA to hitters from either side of the plate, but there is some great value in this lineup.

Pitchers per PA: 3.75 (Rank: 22)
Analysis: Dickey may be in the worst form that we have seen in years. Over the last month, he has a 5.13 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 12.8% and a walk rate of 9.9%. Teams are teeing off on the knuckleballer. While the White Sox rank near the bottom of the league in wOBA against right-handed pitching, I’ll side with their offense in this matchup. When a pitcher relies on strikeouts and his strikeout rate quickly takes a turn for the worse, it spells big trouble.

Analysis: Samardzija has pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 3.22 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 23.8%. He draws a very difficult matchup today against the Blue Jays though, as Toronto is ranked second in wOBA (.331) against right-handed pitching and fifth in wOBA (.324) over the last 14 days. Samardzija would be a borderline SP2, but at his price on DraftKings, he’s an easy avoid today. This is expected to be the highest scoring game in the early slate.

The Blue Jays are one of the best offenses in baseball. They hit left and right-handed pitching well. The issue is that they are priced like the best offense in baseball. Given their matchup against a quality opponent in Jeff Samardzija, they seem a bit overpriced. Jose Reyes deserves consideration as an elite play, while the big right-handed bats are better secondary options.

Pitchers per PA: 3.78 (Rank: 19)
Analysis: Locke has pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 3.51 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 17.5%. He draws a favorable matchup against a depleted Cardinals’ offense that is one of the worst in baseball against left-handed pitching. On the season, St. Louis is ranked 26th in wOBA (.289) and 30th in strikeout rate (25.0%) against southpaws. Granted, this is still Locke that we are talking about, but this is certainly an exploitable matchup.

St. Louis
The Cardinals do not hit left-handed pitching well as a team, but that doesn’t mean that we have to completely avoid the individual hitters in this lineup. Since the start of the 2014 season, Jeff Locke has given up a .332 wOBA to right-handed hitters. Jhonny Peralta is an elite play at shortstop, while Thomas Pham and Yadier Molina are decent value plays at their respective positions.
