MLB Grind Down: Tuesday, July 7th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.261 (Rank: 29) — Strikeout Rate: 21.5% (Rank: 21)
Pitchers per PA: 3.98 (Rank: 1)
Analysis: Lyons has pitched well in his last two starts, posting a 3.03 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 25.6%. He’s not a pitcher that is going to pitch deep into games, but he’s a serviceable starter that can give his team a chance to win. Lyons is a sizable underdog today against the Cubs. While the strikeout potential is there, he’s a risky cash game option. He will likely see little to no run support with Jake Arrieta on the mound.
Pitcher Rating:55.4
Jake Arrieta : FD: $10,100 — DK: $10,400

Pitchers per PA: 3.77 (Rank: 20)
Analysis: Arrieta has pitched well in his recent starts, posting a 2.97 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 26.1% over the last month. He draws a favorable matchup today against the depleted Cardinals, who are ranked 22nd in wOBA (.282) and 22nd in strikeout rate (21.8%) over the last 14 days. Arrieta is the premier pitching option if you are playing in the early slate.

Pitchers per PA: 3.67 (Rank: 30)
Analysis: Moore got off to a nice start in his first outing in over a year, but he was eventually touched up a bit by the Indians. He draws a difficult matchup today against the Royals, who are ranked 14th in wOBA (.317) and first in strikeout rate (16.2%) against left-handed pitching this season. The upside is limited for Moore and he will likely be on some sort of a pitch count. He can safely be avoided in all league formats.

Analysis: Young has not pitched well in his recent starts, posting a 5.44 SIERA with a very low strikeout rate of 11.0% over the last month. He is a favorite today against the Rays though and dollar for dollar, he is probably the second-best fantasy option in the early slate. He draws a decent matchup against the Rays, who are ranked 25th in wOBA (.293) and 25th in strikeout rate (22.1%) against right-handed pitching this season.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.323 (Rank: 11) — Strikeout Rate: 19.3% (Rank: 13)
Pitchers per PA: 3.88 (Rank: 5)
Analysis: Gray has pitched well for the A’s this season, but he runs into the buzz saw that is the Yankees’ offense. Not only are the Yankees ranked fourth in wOBA (.328) against right-handed pitching, but they also have the seventh-lowest strikeout rate and the fifth-highest pitches per plate appearance. That’s a bad combination for a pitcher, especially one that is on the road. There are better pitching options tonight, as Gray is severely overpriced for his matchup.

Pitchers per PA: 3.88 (Rank: 7)
Analysis: Eovaldi has been a serviceable starter for the Yankees this season, but he also draws a very difficult matchup. On the season, the A’s are ranked tenth in wOBA (.321) and fourth in strikeout rate (17.3%) against right-handed pitching. There is more risk than potential reward with Eovaldi, especially considering how many quality left-handed bats the A’s have in their lineup.

Since the start of the 2014 season, Nathan Eovaldi has given up a .352 wOBA to left-handed hitters. The A’s have some talented left-handed bats in their lineup that also see a ballpark boost tonight with the short porch in right field. If he is in the lineup and can hit from the left side, he is in play tonight against Eovaldi.

Analysis: This is one of the few times that we will see Cueto as a large underdog this season. He has pitched well in his recent outings, posting a 2.99 SIERA with an elite strikeout rate of 27.3%. He doesn’t walk many batters and he actually draws a favorable matchup tonight against a depleted Nationals’ offense, that has the ninth-highest strikeout rate (20.6%) against right-handed pitching. I love Cueto as a tournament play, but the limited run support takes him out of cash game consideration.

He has really improved his command this season, as evidenced by his 1.4% walk rate over the last 30 days. He draws a decent matchup tonight against the Reds, who are ranked 17th in wOBA (.310) against right-handed pitching this season. Scherzer should have another solid outing tonight, but the Reds have a low strikeout rate. It may be a good night to target a cheaper pitcher in order to afford some the of the more expensive hitters.

Targeting hitters against Max Scherzer is not a winning proposition. He has held left and right-handed hitters under a .285 wOBA over the last two seasons and he has one of the highest strikeout rates in all of baseball. The Reds should be avoided in all league formats.

Pitchers per PA: 3.77 (Rank: 19)
Analysis: Ross is a high-strikeout pitcher with less than stellar command. Over the last two seasons, he has a 3.30 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.4% and a walk rate of 10.0%. He is typically a much better target when he is pitching at home, as he can afford to be more aggressive in the pitcher-friendly Petco Park. The total for the game is low, but Ross is a large underdog on the road. There isn’t a ton of fantasy appeal here.

Pitchers per PA: 3.79 (Rank: 13)
Analysis: Liriano has pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 3.08 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 23.7%. Command is always an issue with Liriano, but it shouldn’t be a problem tonight against a Padres’ offense that swings at everything. On the season, the Padres are ranked 25th in wOBA (.294) and 28th in strikeout rate (24.2%) against left-handed pitching. Liriano has similar strikeout potential as Max Scherzer, yet he is considerably cheaper on both FanDuel and DraftKings.

San Diego
The Padres were dominated by Francisco Liriano in their last meeting and it appears that we may be in for a repeat performance tonight. The Padres are one of the worst hitting teams against southpaws, despite acquiring Justin Upton, Matt Kemp, and Derek Norris in the offseason.
