Milwaukee Bucks

Record: 12-21 — Road: 3-15 — Last 10: 3-7

The Bucks have lost seven of their last ten games and have a porous 3-15 record on the road this season. Tonight they head to Indiana to take on a good defensive team in the Pacers. The Bucks are only projected to score 96.3 points, which is the second lowest team total on the board

The Pacers have been stout defensively this season, ranking seventh or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. Even though there are only six games on the schedule tonight, this is a decent spot to fade the Bucks as a whole. Michael Carter-Williams, Khris Middleton, and Giannis Antetokounmpo are GPP fliers at best tonight.

Indiana Pacers

Record: 18-13 — Home: 11-4 — Last 10: 5-5

The Pacers have lost five of their last ten games, but are 18-13 on the season. They have played well at home and they are listed as 6.5-point favorites tonight against the Bucks. Indiana has an implied team total of 102.8 points, which is slightly higher than their average points per game this season.

The Bucks have not been stout defensively this season. They are ranked 21st or worse in all four of the defensive categories listed above. There are a few injuries to monitor heading into tonight’s game. Jordan Hill has already been ruled out, while Ian Mahinmi and C.J. Miles are both listed as questionable. Paul George could be worth a look in tournaments, but I’m waiting to target him until he breaks out of his slump.

Elite Plays

NONE

Secondary Plays

Monta Ellis

Ellis has been playing some of his best basketball of the season, averaging 29.2 fantasy points in his last five games. He draws a favorable matchup against the Bucks and he would see a small boost if C.J. Miles is unable to play.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Record: 12-20 — Road: 7-8 — Last 10: 3-7

The Wolves have lost seven of their last games to fall to 12-20 on the season. Tonight they head to Detroit to take on a Pistons team that has really played well at home. The Wolves are 7.5-point underdogs tonight with their team total set at only 96.5 points.

The Pistons have been solid defensively this season. They are ranked at or above the league average in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, rebounding differential, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Wolves have some affordable fantasy options though, so we may not have to avoid them completely.

Elite Plays

Gorgui Dieng

Kevin Garnett is going to get the night off, as the Wolves are playing in the second half of a back-to-back. That means that Dieng is going to draw another start at power forward. In two starts this season, he has averaged 13 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2.5 blocks/steals.

Secondary Plays

Karl-Anthony Towns

I mentioned in yesterday’s Grind Down that KAT was my favorite tournament play of the night. He performed well, finishing the game with 41.5 fantasy points. KAT’s fantasy appeal has always been based on minutes and he is finally seeing minutes in the mid-30’s.

Andrew Wiggins

Wiggins just hasn’t been able to take that next step this season. He is still playing well, he just hasn’t risen to the superstar status that a lot of people expected. He is a decent mid-range SG/SF tonight against the Pistons, who haven’t been particularly stout against shooting guards.

Detroit Pistons

Record: 17-15 — Home: 10-5 — Last 10: 5-5

The Pistons have lost five of their last ten games, but they are still two games above .500 on the season. Tonight they host the visiting Wolves in a game that should be played at an average pace. The Pistons are projected to score 104 points, which is three points higher than their average points per game this season.

The Wolves may not have the worst defense in the NBA, but it is still an exploitable matchup. They are ranked below the league average in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. Give a small boost to the Pistons’ offense as a whole.

Elite Plays

Andre Drummond

I’m 80% sure that Drummond reads the Grind Down and uses it as a motivational tool. Whenever he is listed as an elite play, he puts up a dud. However, when I recommend avoiding him, he goes off for 20 points and 20 rebounds.

Reggie Jackson

There are two schools of thought when it comes to Ricky Rubio and his defense. There is the crowd that thinks he is the worst defender in the NBA and there are people that routinely defend his play. The truth lies somewhere in between, as the Wolves are ranked 20th against point guards this season.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

KCP is among the league leaders in minutes per game. He doesn’t have a particularly high usage rate, but he is going to be on the floor for most of the game. He is a decent option tonight at shooting guard.

Golden State Warriors

Record: 29-2 — Road: 14-2 — Last 10: 8-2

The Warriors got crushed last night against the Mavericks. Draymond Green and Klay Thompson were ice cold from the floor and their defense was nowhere to be found. The good news is that the starters sat out the fourth quarter, so they should have fairly fresh legs tonight. They draw a terrific matchup against the Rockets.

The Rockets are always one of my favorite teams to pick on. They play at a fast pace and they are ranked 22nd or worse in all four of the defensive categories listed above. The original plan was to rest Curry for two games, but after last night, Curry may be itching to get back on the court. He is currently listed as questionable, but given the fact that the Warriors are 2-point underdogs, Vegas isn’t expecting him to play.

Elite Plays

Everything hinges on whether or not Stephen Curry plays tonight. If he is unable to go, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Shaun Livingston would all be elite options against the Rockets. If Curry decides to play, he can be considered an elite play. In that scenario, Green and Thompson would see a slight bump down and Livingston could then be avoided in all league formats.

Stephen Curry

If he plays.

Houston Rockets

Record: 16-17 — Home: 10-8 — Last 10: 5-5

The Rockets have lost five of their last ten games and are now one game shy of .500 on the season. They are listed as 2-point favorites tonight against the Warriors at home. This game should be one of the highest scoring matchups of the night. The Rockets are projected to score 106 points, which is the second highest team total on the board.

The Warriors are ranked third in defensive efficiency, but their pace of play hurts their rankings in both points allowed per game (18th) and fantasy points allowed per game (18th). Vegas is expecting this to be a close, high-scoring game with plenty of fantasy options on both sides of the ball.

Elite Plays

James Harden

Harden’s minutes were down for a short stretch, but he has averaged 37.2 in his last five. We can expect him to play minutes in the high-30’s tonight against the Warriors. Even though Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala are excellent defenders, Harden is still the premier play at shooting guard.

Howard is coming off of one of his best games of the season. Despite his monster outing, the Rockets were unable to beat the Hawks. Howard’s price has come up a bit, but he should still be considered an elite play on DraftKings ($6,900). He should see around 35 minutes tonight against the Warriors.

He isn’t the worst punt play on the board tonight, although Shaun Livingston would be the superior play if Stephen Curry is ruled out.

Los Angeles Clippers

Record: 20-13 — Road: 10-7 — Last 10: 7-3

The Clippers have won seven of their last ten games and are now 20-13 on the season. It appears that their early season struggles are well behind them. They are playing the second half of a back-to-back tonight against the Pelicans. The Clippers are projected to score 102.8 points, which is right around their average points per game this season.

The Pelicans are one of only a few teams that is ranked 25th or worse in all four of the defensive categories listed above. Given the matchup, you would think that the Clippers would have a higher team total, but that has more to do with Blake Griffin absence than it does with the matchup.

Elite Plays

Chris Paul

Paul has played well over his last five games, averaging 43.4 fantasy points in 32.8 minutes. The best part is that his minutes go up to the mid to upper-30’s in close games, which gives him that 50 fantasy point upside. He is one of my favorite plays on the slate.

DeAndre Jordan

Jordan had a monster first quarter last night against the Hornets, but was only able to score 13 fantasy points in the other three quarters. We have yet to see him have that breakout game without Blake Griffin, but it’s coming. My prediction is that Jordan will bring us into the new year with a 15+ point, 15+ rebound, 3+ block game tonight against the Pelicans.

J.J. Redick

We have already seen Redick take on a bigger role in the Clippers’ offense with Blake Griffin out. He has scored at least 25 actual points in two of his last three games and he draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Pelicans. Given the pricing gap of the two sites, Redick is a better play on FanDuel than he is on DraftKings.

New Orleans Pelicans

Record: 10-21 — Home: 7-6 — Last 10: 5-5

The Pelicans are playing their best basketball of the season, but I suppose that isn’t saying a whole lot when they are 10-21. Tonight they host the Clippers in what should be a close, high-scoring game. The Pelicans have an implied team total of 105.3 points, which is 3.2 points higher than their average points scored per game this season.

The Clippers have been mediocre defensively this season. They are ranked between 11th and 17th in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. In addition to an exploitable matchup, the Pelicans are playing at home with one of the most generous statisticians in the NBA.

Elite Plays

Anthony Davis

Do I have an Anthony Davis problem? Yes, yes I do. I’m not alone though, Al Smizzle and myself send each other reminder notes each day to not play him. Do I listen? Of course not. It wouldn’t be a problem if there was an easy solution. I’ll be on the Brow train again tonight and I’m sure a lot of you will be joining me. Everyone loves to hate on Davis, but he’s playing at home, the Pelicans have a team total of 105.3, and the Clippers don’t have Blake Griffin.

Tyreke Evans

Evans is a borderline elite play. I actually prefer using him on DraftKings rather than FanDuel. Even though he is more expensive on DK, he is SG-eligible. There are a lot of great point guard options tonight on FD. The upside is there, but Evans does draw a tough matchup against Chris Paul.

Phoenix Suns

Record: 12-22 — Road: 4-12 — Last 10: 2-8

The Suns have lost eight of their last ten games and are now 4-12 on the road. They were dominated by the Spurs last night and unfortunately they could be in for a similar fate tonight. The Suns are 15-point underdogs against the Thunder. This is by far the largest spread of the night.

The Thunder have been very good defensively this season. They are ranked eighth or better in defensive efficiency, rebounding differential, and fantasy points allowed per game. Brandon Knight should eventually see a boost with Eric Bledsoe out, but we can’t rely on him seeing a full complement of minutes in a potential blowout. He is a GPP flier at best tonight.

Oklahoma City Thunder

Record: 22-10 — Home: 15-4 — Last 10: 8-2

The Thunder have won eight of their last ten games and are now 22-10 on the season. They draw a favorable matchup tonight against the struggling Suns. The Thunder are projected to score 113.5 points tonight, which is the highest team total on the board.

The Suns have struggled on both ends of the floor this season. They are ranked 21st or worse in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Thunder will score a lot of points tonight, but the blowout potential makes me a little hesitant to play Russell Westbrook or Kevin Durant in cash games.

Elite Plays

Russell Westbrook

I still have nightmares about rostering Westbrook on New Years Eve. Last season Kevin Durant was out and I believe the Thunder were facing the Suns. Westbrook had a huge first half, but the game was chippy and he had picked up a technical foul earlier in the game. He was then thrown out right before halftime after he celebrated a three-point play. Oh, the horror! Westbrook obviously has as much upside as any player in tonight’s slate, but we can’t bank on him playing a full complement of minutes.

Kevin Durant

Durant is a bit cheaper than Russell Westbrook and he fills a position (small forward) that is much thinner. He is in the same boat as Westbrook though. While the matchup is great, it’s hard to rely on him seeing a full complement of minutes. The Suns have been downright awful recently.
