Trending at the Right Time

I didn’t play RCB last week, so I was hoping he was going to double his final hole and miss the cut. He hit his second shot 50 yards right of the green, got a free drop, then finally got it on the green in three. He nearly three-putted, but ended up with a bogey to make the cut on the number. I’ve always been a big fan of RCB, as he’s one of the best drivers of the golf ball on tour. That sort of went away earlier in the year, but he’s gained 12 strokes off the tee in his last four events. If he can hit fairways with the big stick, he will be at a major advantage on this lengthy course. He tends to be a little up and down, but he makes a ton of birdies. With over 60% of the golfers making the cut this week, it makes sense to chase golfers with birdie-making upside rather than golfers that you just feel good about making the cut.

Great Play at the Price

It’s a little strange to me how little buzz Rose has gotten over the last month. Yes, he withdrew from the WGC, but he said that it was just back spasms and not an actual injury. He showed up at the PGA Championship and posted yet another top 20 finish. He has been on an absolute tear this season, posting top ten after top ten. He’s a great total driver of the ball, he makes a lot of birdies, and he can avoid making the big number. Many thought he was primed to win a major this season, but I like his chances to win this FedEx Cup. He doesn’t have a weakness in his golf game, which should bode well on a course that was built to test all facets of your game. Rose is my second ranked golfer in my model, yet he’s the sixth most expensive on DraftKings.

Now is as Good of Time as Any

Woods has been in contention on Sunday in each of the last two majors. He’s been close to a win a handful of times this season. When you hear him talk about the year, he’s obviously very pleased that he’s been able to make such a great comeback, but it still feels like he needs a win to truly cap it off. He likely has four more chances in the next four weeks. That’s obviously a lot of golf, but he should be well rested for this week’s Northern Trust. In this field, he is ranked in the top five in strokes gained approach, birdie or better percentage, and par four scoring. This is a course with penal rough and tricky greens. If Tiger can keep the ball in play, he should be right there on Sunday. He’s one of the best in the world with his irons and short game and he has as much motivation as anyone to get a win in the next few weeks. I’ve always said that I like Tiger on courses where par is a good score and we aren’t expecting this to turn into a birdie fest.

Kevin Tway looks to stay hot

Still searching for his first PGA Tour win, Kevin Tway comes into this week riding a streak of great play. Having made six straight cuts including three straight top 25 or better finishes, Tway has his game peaking at the right point of the season. Hoping to improve on his 69th place finish in last year’s FedEx Cup race, Tway will need to continue his great play if he hopes to make a deep run in the playoffs. Reasonably priced across the industry, Tway looks to have a very low projected ownership for the first event of the FedEx Cup race. As we get further into the season-ending race there will be plenty of opportunities to look for players in good form at low ownership. Tway certainly has the form we are looking for, and a projected sub 3% ownership, he represents a fantastic spot to differentiate your lineups from other popular value plays.

Elite Talent at a Decent Price Point

Cantlay is one of those golfers that doesn’t really have a weakness in his game, especially not when it comes to ball striking. He’s ranked fourth in this field in strokes gained off the tee and 23rd in strokes gained approach. He’s played a light schedule this season, which I like to see. He’s given his back plenty of time between tournaments and it has kept the rest of his game fresh. He’s had some nice finishes in the big events this season and is primed to make a run in the FedEx Cup. He’s one of the few golfers this week that is going to feel comfortable hitting driver here, so if he can hit fairways, he’ll put himself at a major advantage over his competitors.

The Tides are Turning

I’m not going to lie, I’m a little worried about this pick. He’s already being talked up across the industry, so he could become fairly chalky at a price of only $8,800. I’ve been waiting and waiting for him to have a big week with his irons and it finally happened last week at the Wyndham Championship. He gained over seven strokes on his approaches, a number that he hadn’t come close to for a very long time. He’s had some decent finishes here and there, but they’ve all been thanks to a good chipping or putting week. If he has turned a corner with his irons, we can expect a big FedEx Cup from one of the best ball strikers on tour in the last few years. Let’s hope last week wasn’t a flash in the pan.

Keith Mitchell continues to make the most of his rookie season

While the adjustment from The Web.com Tour to The PGA Tour seems to be easier with the removal of q school, it’s still no easy task to play well during a rookie season. New players must learn the courses in a shorter amount of time, and also learn where to stay and eat at each venue. PGA Tour rookie Kieth Mitchell is one of the few rookies who is playing better than expected despite having to learn the ropes. Ranked inside the top 70 in The FedEx Cup standings, Mitchell has a chance to really finish the season strong thus creating an opportunity to play in bigger events next year. Priced very low across the industry, Mitchell represents a great source of value relief in GPP builds this week. At a little over 4 birdies per round, Mithcell ranks inside the top 15 in birdies this season thus giving him the ability to pay off his salary even without a top finish. Comfortably positioned to play the first two events of The FedEx Cup race, Mitchell does not have to worry about his place in the standings. This type of freedom should suit Mitchell well as he nothing to lose and everything to gain. The cheap price combined with birdie upside makes Mitchell a great GPP play this week.

DraftKings projections are live and Charley Hoffman ranks as a top play

Multiple PGA Tour winner Charlie Hoffman enters this week needing to play great golf if he has any intent on making a deep run in this year’s FedEx Cup race. Currently ranked in the 98th position in the standings Hoffman is in jeopardy of making it to next week’s Dell Technologies Championship. While Hoffman has not exactly played poorly this season, he has lacked the number of high finishes needed to gain valuable FedEx Cup points. With 8 top 25 or better finishes and zero top ten’s, Hoffman is in danger of posting his first career season without a top ten finish. That being said the discount on a golfer of Hoffman’s talent is worth taking stock on for this week’s event. While Hoffman has struggled to post a top ten finish this season, he has been extremely consistent in his play this year. A top 25 at this price point would make this PGA Tour veteran a clear-cut play in terms of value, and when you factor in his ability to make bridies Hoffman becomes a great play for The Northen Trust. The combination of his talent and the discount on price makes it easy to see how Hoffman ranks as one of the Pt/$/K players in our DraftKings projections for the week.

Cheng-Tsung Pan to feature a new caddie this week

PGA Tour sophomore C.T. Pan took to social media earlier this week to announce the addition of a new caddie. Pan tweeted that he will test his marriage by adding his wife to the bag for The Wyndham Championship. Comfortably inside the top 125 Pan will keep his tour card for next season, but will need to play well over the next few weeks if he has any hopes of making a deep run into the FedEx Cup race. Pan surfaced earlier this season as a very popular play for The Travelers Championship, but a missed cut let many in the DFS community with a sour taste. With a game built more an accuracy and less on distance, Pan should be on the radar once again this week as a solid source of salary relief. With four top 20 or better finishes in his last nine starts, Pan provides more than just cut making ability. Even with the addition of a new caddie, Pan makes for a great play in GPP’s for the final event of the regular season.

Steve Stricker is a great fit for this course

Part-time PGA Tour player Steve Stricker heads into this week’s Wyndham Championship with continued motivation to play well. At 51 years of age, Stricker already has proven this season that he still has the game to compete with the best players in the world. Bouncing back in between the Champions Tour and The PGA Tour, Stricker will make his 17th professional start of the season this week. In addition to his 2 wins on the Senior Tour, Stricker has made nine cuts on regular tour this year including 4 top 25 or better finishes. On a course that will feature accuracy with iron play and solid putting, Stricker makes sense in all formats this week. Making his first start at the Wyndham in 12 years, Stricker could be motivated to improve on his 141st position in the standings with hopes of playing in next week’s first event of the FedEx Cup race. While most in the industry will look at Stricker and see his age, there is still plenty of talent left in his game. Sedgefield Country Club fits right into his game, and it would not surprise me to see Stricker’s name near the top of the leaderboard on the weekend.

Shane Lowry flying under the radar

Priced up due to his solid recent play, Shane Lowry could go under-owned in comparison to other big named players in the same price range. Searching for his first PGA Tour win since the 2015 Bridgestone Invitational, Lowry has a fair amount of incentive to play well this week. Currently ranked in the 139 position in the FedEx Cup standings, Lowry needs a great week if he has plans on extending his PGA Tour season. Looking to build on three straight top 15 or better finishes, Lowry heads into the most important part of the season with great form. Currently projected to have sub 8% ownership and sandwiched between other popular players in his price range, Lowry could end up being a great GPP pivot play option.

Chris Kirk looks to continue his steady play

Currently ranked in the 60th position in the FedEx Cup standings, Chirs Kirk will use the last week of the season to perhaps better his chance of making a deep run into this year’s race. With a second place finish in the 2014 FedEx Cup race, Kirk understands both what it takes and what it means to play well to finish out the season. Having not won since the 2015 Colonial, Kirk enters this week just lacking a top-tier finish or two from making his 2018 season a memorable one. Kirk has made 8 straight cuts prior to this week including a T6 at The FedEx St. Jude Classic in June. A bit underpriced in comparison to his actual talent, Kirk makes sense as a great option on DraftKings in both cash and GPP’s this week. While at $7,500 on DraftKings Kirk would easily pay off his salary with a made cut and a top 30 or better finish, his solid iron play game combined with his potential to post a high finish makes the decision to roster this multiple tour winner an easy choice in a field that lacks overall depth of talent.
