Sergio Garcia prepares to defend his green jacket

A lot has changed for Sergio Garcia in the last year. In addition to winning his first major at last year’s Masters, Garcia enters the first major of the year as both a new husband and father. Garcia will try to be the fourth golfer in the history of this event to win back to back green jackets. It’s not uncommon to try and fade the defending champion of a major, but since the Masters is the only major to play at the same course every year picking the defending champion can work out to be a solid option. In the last 20 years of The Masters, past champions have finished inside the top 20 nine times. Armed with a good course history Garcia comes into this week as the 13th highest priced golfer on DraftKings. While a top 20 finish would certainly not be enough to pay off his $8,600 price tag, it would not be a surprise to see this new well-balanced version of Garcia make a deep run in this years Masters. Trending towards a decent early week ownership number, Garcia is a play worth considering for your roster builds this week.

Masters projections are live and Pat Perez ranks as a top play

Veteran tour player Pat Perez will prepare to make his second start at The Masters this week. At 41 Perez is defying both his age and injuries to play the best golf of his career. Motivated by his second chance in golf Perez has gone on record as saying that he wants nothing more to make the Ryder Cup team this season. Heading into this week, Perez finds himself a three-time tour winner who now ranks as the 21st best golfer in the world. In his last 33 events, Perez has 20 top 25 or better finishes and rates as a great value on DraftKings this week. Perez finished inside the top 18 in last year’s Masters and at $6,900 he stands a great chance to once again pay off his salary at DraftKings.Perez is playing the best golf of his career and ranks as the overall top play in the RotoGrinders DraftKings projection tool in terms of Pt/$/K and should be a great play in all formats for the first major of the season.

MDF Rule in play this weekend

Ninety-one golfers will tee it up for Saturday play at the Houston Open, but due to the MDF rule only around 70 players will compete in Sunday’s final round. The MDF rule comes into play when more than 78 players make the cut. In order to speed up the pace of play, the PGA tour will make another cut on Sunday closer to the top 70 and ties. When making roster choices for the weekend slate, keep in mind that only seventy or so players will participate in Sunday’s final round. The cut line fell at three under par today and there are currently 49 players between 3 and 5 under par. The weekend DFS golf scoring system does not reward points for players finishing position. Typically we are looking to roster players who can make a ton of birdies on the weekend. With a large number of players within a few shots of the Saturday cut line, there is always the chance that a weekend lineup could suffer the dreaded second missed cut. The appeal of picking the safe play may provide comfort, but the reality is we just need players who can make the most DK points for the weekend. In order to differentiate from the crowd, picking players closer to the cut line could provide you with an excellent leverage play.

PGA rosters lock in 20 minutes, and no major news to report

The first round of The 2018 Houston Open is set to start in less than 20 minutes. As of now, we have no additional news in terms of injuries or withdrawals. Heavy rain came through the Houston area last night producing almost 2.5 inches of rain. First-round tee times were pushed back two hours and golfers will get to play prefered lies on Thursday due to the wet conditions. An already long golf course could play even longer today, thus giving a slight edge to bombers this week. Good luck this week grinders, as always if any late news breaks we will provide the updates needed.

Luke List continues to gain steam

After starting the out the 2018 calendar year with back to back missed cuts Luke List has been one of the more consistent golfers on the PGA Tour. Having not finished outside the top 26 in his last six stroke-play starts, List has his game trending in the right direction. Consumer confidence is also on the rise for List as he is currently projected to be one of the top golfers in terms of ownership. Riding the wave of tout buzz this week List is looking to eclipse the 20% ownership barrier for the first time this season. While his play certainly merits attention there is a strong case to made for fading List in tournaments this week. On one hand, List is a very talented player, but on the other hand, he is still somewhat of an unproven commodity. Having only a handful of top-five finishes in the last 12 months, you could make the argument for fading an high owned unproven player at an inflated price makes sense from a game theory perspective. There is no doubting the potential List brings to the table, but if you are in favor of a little game theory then fading a high owned player makes a ton of sense in the final week before the first major of the season.

Weather update for The Houston Open

Kevin Roth’s weather forecast for The Houston Open is now available to read in the main forum. Over the last few days, most of Texas has experienced a bit of rain, and Houston is forecasted to receive a fair amount ahead of Thursday’s opening round. As we normally see most weeks on tour, the tee time splits for this week’s event appear to be headed towards a normal even draw. According to Roth, we can expect 4 pretty good days of golf, but with rain moving through the area tonight an already long golf course could become even longer by Thursday morning. If anything using the weather to handicap plays this week should be more of a tiebreaker than a deal maker. A wet golf long golf course could favor the long hitters, so if you face a tough roster choice the weather tiebreaker would say pick the longer of the two players. As always we will keep an eye on the weather up until lock providing any updates as needed.

Thomas Pieters looks to bounce back from poor showing at WGC Match Play

With the Masters right around the corner, the DFS golf world is in high anticipation of the first major of 2018. In order to help fill some of the big GPP’s offered during major championship week’s DraftKings will publish contests and prices a few weeks early with hopes of gaining steam prior to the start of the event. One way to use early pricing to our advantage is to compare prices for players who are in both The Houston Open and The Masters. With prices for The Masters set almost two weeks ago we have a chance to attack any pricing discrepancies we might find for this week’s event. Comming off a poor performance during the WGC Match Play last week, Thomas Pieters stands out as a good value for this week’s Houston Open. At $7,500, Pieters receives an $800 discount from his price for next week’s Masters and should be considered a strong play for not only this week but also for Augusta. Pieters will make his Houston Open debut this week and should find the course to his liking. As one of the longer courses on the PGA Tour, Redstone can often favor the long hitters, and Pieters is without a doubt a player who can perform well on a bombers paradise. Often thought of as a boom or bust type of player, Pieters surprising comes into this week as a source of consistency. Having made his last 12 worldwide cuts Pieters has more than enough game to pay off his salary this week. While most players would rather not win on the week prior to a major, it’s not uncommon to see golfers peak earlier than expected and grab an unexpected win. Pieters will be a popular play this week, but his talent and low price should merit a strong roster consideration for all formats for The 2018 Houston Open.

Daniel Berger is a horse for this course

Prior to the unprecedented run of Justin Thomas, many in this industry thought that Daniel Berger was one of the better young players on tour. Now firmly in the shadows of Thomas, Berger has his work cut out in terms of gaining ground as one of the young stars on tour. Currently ranked in the 37th position in the world, Berger has managed to finish inside the top 30 in the final FedEx Cup standings in his first three years on tour. With the exception of a missed cut at The Genesis Open, Berger is quietly having a good start to this season. In 8 starts, Berger has only finished outside the top 30 twice including 4 top 15 or better finishes. Heading into this week other big-name players will grab their fair share of interest, but Berger’s past performance at this event makes him worthy of a top end spend this week. This multiple PGA tour winner returns to a course where he is 32 under par over the last three seasons. With back to back top-five finishes in the last two starts at this event, there should be no reason to not play Berger in both cash and GPP“s this week. Other players in the same price range will gain interest this week, but Berger at $9,400 is the type of play that typically wins money in the long run.

J.B. Holmes is a popular play amongst experts this week

Slow play antics at The Farmers Insurance Open earlier this season left many in the DFS community with a harsh view of J.B. Holmes. Plagued by inconsistent play this former Ryder Cup member finished outside the top 15 in the 2017 FedEx Cup standings. With poor play starting to reflect in his DFS pricing, Holmes was a player only worth looking into in terms of a value play with upside. After his 4th place finish at The Farmers, the combination of poor play and a strong dislike of his slow play antics have seen Holmes ownership numbers fail to crack 7% over the last six weeks. The price on Holmes is yet low again this week, and his strong course history finds this boom or bust golfer near the top of our expert rankings for players under $7,500 on DraftKings. Still, a very talented golfer and past champion of this event Holmes has proven that he knows what it takes to get it done this week. Priced to low for his talent, Holmes offers a ton of upside and should be considered a great tournament option this week.

Lee Westwood set to make his 2018 PGA Tour debut

Once regarded as perhaps the best player to yet win a major, Lee Westwood appears headed towards missing his first Masters in the last 13 years. Currently ranked in the 90th position in the world, Westwood is playing competitively for the first time since last November. There is no injury tied to his absence, so at this time it appears that Westwood simply just chose to take the time off. Like many others in this field, Westwood would need a win in order to play in next week’s Masters, but the long lay off should make it hard for him to play well enough to compete this week. Westwood has missed three straight cuts at The Houston Open, and even at $7,100 on DraftKings he remains only a deep sleeper option for the week. Ownership projections are always a great way to potentially look for great values in terms of a predicted bargain, and Westwood would normally stand out if it were not for his lack of playing time. There is no question about the talent Westwood brings to the table, but buyers should be cautious due to the uncertainty of how he will play after such a long layoff.

Martin Kaymer set to return from injury

Former Master Champion Martin Kaymer will make his return to the PGA Tour this week. Kaymer has been sidelined for the last month and a half due to a wrist injury. One of the more active players on Twitter, Kaymer has kept the public in the loop in terms of the progress of his injury. With multiple updates over the past few week’s Kaymer, looks ready to compete in his week’s Houston Open. Prior to his injury, Kaymer managed to post a few decent starts on the European Tour, but his lack of playing time and uncertainty of injury will keep many off him this week. When healthy Kaymer is a talent worth keeping an eye on, and at $7,100 could be a great GPP dark horse this week.

DraftKings projections are live and Chez Reavie sits in the top spot

Projections are live for The Huston Open are live and Chez Reavie sits in the top spot in terms of Pt/$/K on DraftKings. With back to back runner-up earlier this season, Reavie is playing some of the best golf of his career. Currently ranked inside the top 50 in the world Reavie will get the honor of playing in 5th Masters next week. WIth only one missed cut this season, Reavie offers gamers a chance to get the combination of safety and upside at a very affordable price this week. Reavie has eclipsed the 9.0 Pt/$/K barrier six times this season and should be in a good spot to do that once again this week. Reavie is 5 for 8 in cuts made at The Huston Open, including a T7 in 2016. The price is simply just too cheap for Reavie this week and he makes for a great play in all formats.

Emiliano Grillo continues to gain steam

Emiliano Grillo burst onto the golf scene with a very convincing win in his first event as a full-time member of the PGA Tour. Grillo has struggled to play well since his maiden PGA Tour victory, but solid recent play has him trending as the number one owned player for this week’s Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. With two top six or better finishes in the last month, Grillo appears to have found his game again, and the lack of other talented players in this field makes it easy for the masses to gravitate towards adding him to a roster. Very few players in the field have shown the ability to win a PGA Tour event, and Grillo stands out as a clear-cut top end spend with the talent to potentially grab his second tour win. This week’s venue stands out as a course that lends itself to length off the tee, and Grillio has the long game that should fair well this week. Finding safe plays is not an easy task this week, but the combination of his recent form and his talent make Grillo a top-tier option for the 2018 Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.
