Which useful trend or statistic stuck out most during your research?
STLCardinals84: Prior to getting ejected after 5 1/3 innings in his last start, Justin Verlander had logged 10+ strikeouts in seven straight starts.
MrTuttle: Sean Manaea struck out 28 hitters over his last three rehab starts (17.2 innings). He may be a bit risky to pitch today due to matchup (although I’m on board taking a shot on his cheap tag on FanDuel) but he’s a name to keep an eye on as the season winds down.
Naapstermaan: This season J.A. Happ has allowed the second most HR’s to righties (26) and the second most runs scored to righties (68). Oakland ranks 5th in SLG and 7th in HR’s against lefties this season.
a25smith: Caleb Smith has struggled to find his early season form since coming back from injury and was lit up in August. Over his last 6 starts, he’s allowed hard hit rates of 56.3%, 47.1%, 68.4%, 41.7%, 38.5% and 33.3% so it’s an intriuging spot for WAS against a pitcher who overall has good numbers on the season but is struggling big time right now.
What is your hot take of the day?
STLCardinals84: Dexter Fowler hits for the cycle.
MrTuttle: Sean Manaea, Tyler Mahle, and Danny Duffy combine for 25+ strikeouts in their returns to the Majors.
Naapstermaan: The A’s hit six HR’s while Manaea holds the Yankees to under three runs.
a25smith: The Nats continued to pile on Caleb Smith as they score 8+ runs
Who is your top overall pitcher (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
STLCardinals84: Justin Verlander – If you are spending up at pitcher today, Verlander is the clear choice for me. You simply aren’t getting enough savings by going down to Darvish or Corbin, so find a way to get up to the Houston ace. Verlander continues to pile up the strikeouts, and he gets to face a middle of the pack offense today with the Blue Jays on the docket. Sure, Verlander continues to give up home runs, but they are often solo shots. The rest of his profile is elite everywhere, and you simply can’t ignore his consistent strikeout upside.
MrTuttle: Justin Verlander – Instead of touting how good of a pitcher Justin Verlander is I want to make a note to PAY ATTENTION TO LINEUPS as they come out. Verlander’s price tag is fairly prohibitive on this slate – especially on DraftKings – but is the slate’s top overall option. Both Patrick Corbin and Charlie Morton rate similarly to JV in terms of point-per-dollar and could see their stock rise if they benefit from weakened lineups.
Naapstermaan: Justin Verlander – If Corbin was about $1k cheaper than he is I’d like him more but where everyone is priced I will try my best to fit Verlander in today. Toronto is 2nd to last in AVG against righties this season with the 5th lowest runs scored. Coming off a mediocre start I expect Verlander to come out strong and get back to his 10+ strikeout dominant outings.
a25smith: Justin Verlander – This is a tough slate on DK as we have that 14 total in Coors staring us in the face, but also Justin Verlander and is his 34.5% strikeout rate. He wasn’t great in his last last start and got ejected after arguing with the umpire so maybe we see him a little angry and prior to that start he struck out 10+ batters in each of his previous 7 starts. For GPPs, I obviously want exposure to Coors and Miles Mikolas is popping both in the BAT projections and in terms of Vegas implied run totals. The BAT has him as the highest projected PT/$ pitcher and Vegas the Reds implied run total at just 3.76 runs, which is 4th lowest on the slate, trailing on teams facing Verlander, Corbin and Morton.
Who is your top overall hitter (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
STLCardinals84: This is wildly site dependent today on a lot of levels. I like looking for more mid-range options today because there is not a lot to save with at pitcher. I like the lefty masher in Castellanos at $3,200 on FanDuel, and he will absolutely be a key piece for me over there. On DraftKings, the salary cap is really tight over there, and I’ll likely try to find a way to prioritize Trevor Story against a mediocre LHP given his massive power upside.
MrTuttle: Trevor Story – This answer is site dependent as FanDuel isn’t including the Rangers or Rockies game on their main slate. On DraftKings, the Rockies are easily the top team to target and Story is their top overall option with the platoon advantage against Steven Brault.
Naapstermaan: Nicholas Castellanos – Against lefties this season Castellanos is hitting .370 with a 1.128 OPS and a .326 ISO. I expect Gio Gonzalez to get knocked around early this game and Castellanos to do damage off of him and for just $3.2k on FD he is close to a must-play for me there and is very affordable at $4.7k on DK.
a25smith: On DK, you need to try to find a way to get some expsosure to Coors and that 14 run total. I’d prioritize the COL RHB first and ideally grab two out of Story/Arenado/Desmond. On FD, I’m liking the Washington bats so it’s Anthony Rendon with the platoon advantage against a struggling Smith, and we also have Dozier and Zimmerman as cheap options to help fit a Verlander into lineups.
