Gio Gonzalez emerged as a top notch starter last season putting up a 15-9 W-L record to go along with a 2.96 ERA. In 201 innings of work, he struck out 188 and now enters a contract year along with teammate Bryce Harper. He’s looking to improve even further from his solid season last year.
.229 wOBA vs L .38 HR/9 22.7% K 7.7% BB
.296 wOBA vs R 1.11 HR/9 22.8% K 10.1% BB
The southpaw is very good against LH bats as expected and is more than adequate against RH bats. While his K rate isn’t elite, it’s good enough to have upside in the right matchup.
Quick Breakdown:
With only two left-handed bats in the lineup, I’m not sure there’s enough upside for Gonzalez. He’s viable in cash games as he’s a relatively safe option, but for GPP’s I think there are better options.

Cousin Sal takes the mound for the Reds today. He’s been mostly mediocre through his big league career.
.337 wOBA vs L .89 HR/9 20.4% K 10.5% BB
.343 wOBA vs R .97 HR/9 17.7% K 8.9% BB
Doesn’t get out of hand in terms of giving up too much power, but has little upside in terms of striking batters out.
Quick Breakdown:
Facing a potent Nationals lineup that has the 3rd highest total on the slate, this is an easy fade.

Adam Eaton and Bryce Harper are the two left-handed bats at the top of the order and both are elite options in this matchup. The rest of the top six are all secondary options and viable as part of a team stack with Anthony Rendon and Ryan Zimmerman the best of that group.

Gonzalez is a tough pitcher to face. Adam Duvall and Eugenio Suarez are intriguing RH bats that I don’t mind as one offs as they both exhibit upside against LHP (especially Duvall).

Chris Stratton only pitched 58 2/3 innings last season with the following numbers:
.355 wOBA vs L .68 HR/9 16.5% K 13.4% BB
.291 wOBA vs R .84 HR/9 23.3% K 8.5% BB
He limits the long ball but walks a lot of batters from the left side of the plate (probably trying to limit damage).
Quick Breakdown:
The Dodgers have struggled hitting the ball out of the gates but Stratton doesn’t have the kind of upside we want to take a flyer on – especially with a Dodgers lineup that will likely have as many LH bats as it will RH bats.

Rich Hill numbers against LH bats last season seemed a bit odd to me. Let’s take a look and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
.374 wOBA vs L (.296 at home)
1.73 HR/9 22.6% K 15.3% BB
.304 Career wOBA vs L .69 HR/.9 24.7%K 13.2% BB

1.07 HR/9 32.2% K 7.0% BB
.297 Career wOBA vs R
1.09 HR/9 24.9% K 8.9% BB
He got absolutely mashed last season by LH bats but it’s not really in line with his career numbers. He’s always struggled with control against that side of the plate, but it’ll be interesting to see if those struggles continue.
Quick Breakdown:
The Giants used to be a LH heavy lineup, but now will only have three hitters from that side of the plate in their lineup. If you’re playing a slate that includes this last game of the day, then Hill is a viable option with his strikeout rate – especially if he can keep up a 30% plus rate against RH bats like he did last season.

Today seems like a good day for the Dodgers to break out and what better time to do it than in a Sunday Night primetime affair. I like all four bats at the top of the projected order with Corey Seager and Cody Bellinger my top two options. Yasmani Grandal is always worth a shot in a team stack or as a one off because of the position he plays.

Andrew McCutchen really likes hitting LHP. Last season he had a .462 wOBA and .360 ISO against them. That makes him a viable option against even the best of LHP. Buster Posey is always interesting at a thin position, but I’m going to limit any exposure I have to McCutchen.
