MLB Grind Down: Wednesday, September 30th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Pitcher Grind Down
R.A. Dickey : FD: $7,900 — DK: $6,500
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 425.0 — SIERA: 4.43 — ERA: 3.85 — K%: 16.6% — BB%: 7.6% — HR/9: 1.1

Baltimore Orioles Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.322 (Rank: 3) — Strikeout Rate: 22.0% (Rank: 28)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.253 (Rank: 30) — Strikeout Rate: 22.5% (Rank: 24)
Pitches per PA: 3.81 (Rank: 17)
Analysis: Dickey may have a 2.78 ERA over the last month of play, but he has a 4.51 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 12.6% during that stretch. He has not been a great fantasy option this season thanks to his limited upside. Even though the Orioles strikeout at a high rate, they also have the third-highest team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. Dickey is a subpar pitching option tonight.
Pitcher Rating: 57.6
Kevin Gausman : FD: $6,500 — DK: $5,400
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 217.2 — SIERA: 3.98 — ERA: 4.01 — K%: 19.7% — BB%: 7.3% — HR/9: 1.0

Toronto Blue Jays Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.339 (Rank: 1) — Strikeout Rate: 18.8% (Rank: 5)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.362 (Rank: 2) — Strikeout Rate: 18.5% (Rank: 5)
Pitches per PA: 3.86 (Rank: 9)
Analysis: Gausman has been a viable value pitcher in DFS for the better part of two months. He comes into tonight’s start in relatively good form, posting a 4.18 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 21.8% over the last month of play. The issue tonight is his matchup. On the season, the Blue Jays are ranked first in team wOBA and fifth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. The risk outweighs the potential reward here.
Pitcher Rating: 54.2

Toronto
The Blue Jays haven’t technically won their division yet and they are still fighting with the Royals for the first seed in the American League playoffs. They have every reason to try to win tonight, which is great for their fantasy appeal. They draw a favorable matchup against Kevin Gausman, who has allowed a .329 wOBA to right-handed hitters over the last two seasons.

The Orioles may not have anything to play for tonight, but they do draw a favorable matchup against R.A. Dickey at home in the hitter-friendly confines of Camden Yards. Pitches per PA: 3.91 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: Miley has been in surprisingly good form over the last month of play, posting a 3.73 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 20.1%. The Red Sox may not be in the playoff race, but they still have plenty to play for tonight. They are looking to sweep the rival Yankees in hopes that they can keep them out of the Wildcard. It would take a lot for that to happen, but it’s still very possible after the Red Sox have taken the first two games in New York. In terms of fantasy appeal, there is very little for Miley. The Yankees are ranked third in team wOBA and seventh in strikeout rate against left-handed pitching this season.

Analysis: Tanaka has been terrific over the last month of play, posting a 2.83 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 25.2% and a walk rate of only 1.9%. He appears to be rounding into form at the perfect time. While his matchup against the Red Sox is a difficult one, I expect him to pitch well in a very important game for the Yankees. Tanaka is affordable tonight and he is in play on both single and multi-pitcher sites.

The Red Sox would love to play the role of spoiler, but they draw a tough matchup tonight against Masahiro Tanaka, who has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .295 wOBA over the last two seasons. Even though Wade Miley has pitched well recently, this is still a favorable matchup for the Yankees. Analysis: Lyons has had some success as a spot starter over the last two seasons, posting a 3.53 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22.7%. The Cardinals haven’t officially locked up their division yet, but they can come close with a win over the Pirates tonight. On paper, this is a decent matchup, but I typically like to pay up for consistency at pitcher. It’s hard to expect a good outing from a young pitcher facing a team that is playing in a must win game at home.

Analysis: Morton hasn’t been in the best of form over the last month of play, posting a 4.05 SIERA (5.81 ERA) with a strikeout rate of only 17.2%. He is also playing for a team that pinch hits for a pitcher with a one-hitter through six innings after throwing only 56 pitches (see: J.A. Happ). The Pirates need to win this game to have any chance at winning the division, but I’m not sold on either starting pitcher in this one.

Texas Rangers Offense (2015)
vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.315 (Rank: 17) — Strikeout Rate: 22.0% (Rank: 20)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.366 (Rank: 1) — Strikeout Rate: 18.6% (Rank: 6)
Pitches per PA: 3.83 (Rank: 15)
Analysis: Boyd has been one of the most hittable pitchers in baseball this season. His strikeout rate has improved recently, but he walks too many batters and he gives up a high wOBA to hitters from both sides of the plate. He should be avoided tonight against the Rangers, who have the highest team wOBA over the last two weeks of play.
Pitcher Rating: 40.2
Yovani Gallardo : FD: $8,100 — DK: $5,700

Detroit Tigers Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.316 (Rank: 14) — Strikeout Rate: 20.1% (Rank: 15)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.298 (Rank: 24) — Strikeout Rate: 22.1% (Rank: 16)
Pitches per PA: 3.85 (Rank: 12)
Analysis: Gallardo has not been in great form recently, posting a 4.50 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 15.2%. He is a better real-life pitcher than he is in DFS because very few of his outs come by the way of the strikeout. I expect him to get plenty of run support tonight, but he has limited upside against a potent Tigers’ lineup.
Pitcher Rating: 59.6

Detroit
The Tigers’ offense has struggled over the last few weeks, but they draw a nice matchup tonight against Yovani Gallardo, who has allowed a .314 wOBA to both left and right-handed hitters over the last two seasons. The Tigers also see a small ballpark boost tonight playing in the hitter-friendly Globe Life Park.

Texas
The Rangers draw a terrific matchup tonight against Matt Boyd, who has allowed a .359+ wOBA to both left and right-handed hitters this season. The Rangers also have plenty to play for, as they are clinging on to a two-game lead over the Angels in the American League West. Load up on Rangers in both cash games and tournaments.
