Orlando Magic (Record: 6-7, Road: 2-4)

After an NFL Sunday filled with injuries, Monday night’s NBA slate can’t come fast enough!

The Magic have not played well on the road this season, as they are currently 2-4 away from the Amway Center. They draw a tough test tonight against the Cavaliers in Cleveland. Vegas has the Magic listed as 9.5-point underdogs in a game that features a total of only 197 points.

The Cavaliers present one of the most difficult in daily fantasy basketball. On the season, they are ranked 11th or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, rebounding differential, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Magic are projected to score 93.8 points tonight, which is the second lowest implied team total on the schedule.

Even though there are only seven games on the slate tonight, the Magic are a team that I don’t mind fading completely. Their implied team total is nearly seven points lower than their average points scored on the season. All five Magic starters have some risk attached to them. Elfrid Payton has been inconsistent, Victor Oladipo hasn’t played great since coming back from injury, Evan Fournier is no longer priced at a discount, Tobias Harris minutes are volatile, and Nikola Vucevic has a difficult matchup against Tristan Thompson.

Cleveland Cavaliers (Record: 10-3, Home: 7-0)

The Cavaliers are a perfect 7-0 at home this season. As large favorites tonight against the Magic, they have a good chance of keeping their unbeaten record at home intact. The Cavaliers are currently riddled with injuries. Kyrie Irving, Iman Shumpert, and Timofey Mozgov are all out tonight. Additionally, Mo Williams is listed as doubtful which means Matthew Dellavedova will draw another start at point guard.

The Magic have slowed their pace of play this season and they have improved on the defensive end of the floor. They are ranked right around the league average in both points allowed per game and defensive efficiency. The Cavaliers have an implied team total of 103.3 points tonight, which is the third highest on the schedule.

Even in a potential blowout, the Cavaliers starting lineup is filled with viable fantasy options tonight. Matthew Dellavedova is expected to play through an ankle injury tonight. With Mo Williams out, he makes a very nice value play at point guard. J.R. Smith has seen an increase in minutes and production recently and is still very affordable across the industry. LeBron James is always in play, given his upside and ability to fill up all areas of the stat sheet. Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson are both in play in the frontcourt with Timofey Mozgov out. Thompson is coming off of a terrific 38-fantasy point outing against the Hawks.

Sacramento Kings (Record: 5-9, Road: 1-4)

The Kings have played better recently, but they are still only 5-9 on the season. Tonight they head to Charlotte to take on the Hornets in what is expected to be one of the highest-scoring games of the evening. The Kings are 4.5-point underdogs in a game that features a total of 208 points.

The Hornets have been mediocre on the defensive end of the floor this season. They are ranked between 11th and 20th in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, rebounding differential, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Kings are projected to score 101.8 points tonight, which is right below their average points scored this season.

DeMarcus Cousins has been terrific recently, averaging 54.2 fantasy points (FD scoring) over his last five games. He has one of the highest turnover-adjusted usage rates of any player in the NBA at 30.2. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the combination of Marvin Williams and Al Jefferson. Williams is too small to defend Cousins and Jefferson has never been known as an elite defender. Rajon Rondo is also in play tonight, although his price has been creeping up recently. He is a borderline elite play on FanDuel ($8,000) and a secondary play on DraftKings ($9,000).

Charlotte Hornets (Record: 7-6, Home: 5-1)

The Hornets have won two games in a row and seven of their last ten. They are 5-1 at home this season. Cody Zeller and P.J. Hairston are both questionable for tonight’s game against the Kings. While neither player has much fantasy value, they do impact the appeal of Marvin Williams, Jeremy Lin, and Jeremy Lamb.

The Kings are one of the best teams to target players against. On the season, Sacramento is ranked 23rd or worse in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Kings also play at a fast pace, averaging 102.6 possessions per game. The Hornets have an implied team total of 106.3 points tonight, which is the highest on the board. There won’t be many times during the season when the Hornets have the highest team total, so we should take advantage of it tonight.

All five Hornets’ starters deserve consideration tonight. Kemba Walker has seen a nice boost in both minutes and production recently, averaging 37.7 fantasy points per game in his last five. Jeremy Lin would offer nice value again if he were to draw another start at shooting guard. Nicolas Batum has really fit in nicely with this team. This is a matchup where he could potentially fill up all areas of the stat sheet. Marvin Williams would see a nice boost if Cody Zeller were ruled out. And finally, Al Jefferson is worth a look in tournaments. His potential matchup against DeMarcus Cousins is less than appealing, but he has shown immense upside this season.

New York Knicks (Record: 8-6, Road: 5-2)

The Knicks have played better than any reasonable person could have expected heading into the season. They are 8-6 on the year, with an impressive 5-2 record on the road. Tonight they head to Miami to take on the Heat in what is expected to be one of the slowest-paced games on the schedule. Both teams have averaged less than 98 possessions per game this season.

The Heat have been dominant defensively this season, ranked third or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. The combination of a slow tempo and a shut down defense really limits the fantasy appeal of their opponents. The Knicks are only projected to score 93 points tonight, which is the lowest implied team total on the board.

There are only two fantasy options on my radar from the Knicks tonight and both are secondary options at their respective positions. According to the DvP chart above, Carmelo Anthony has the best matchup of the five starters. However, I have him ranked fifth among the five superstars in action tonight behind the likes of Russell Westbrook, DeMarcus Cousins, LeBron James, and Andre Drummond. Kristaps Porzingis is a nice tournament play here. Predicting his minutes on a nightly basis has been tough, which is why I will be avoiding him in cash games.

Miami Heat (Record: 8-4, Home: 7-2)

The Heat haven’t had to travel much in the first month of the season. Ten of their first 15 games have been at home. They have taken advantage of their home cooking, as they are already 7-2 at the American Airlines Arena. Tonight they host the visiting Knicks in what should be a defensive battle.

The Knicks are ranked right around the league average in defensive efficiency this season, but thanks to a slow pace of play, they are ranked ninth in points allowed per game and seventh in fantasy points allowed per game. The Heat are 5-point favorites in this matchup, but they are only projected to score 98 points.

Given the expected pace and the low total, this is one of my least favorite games to target tonight. The Knicks are ranked 14th or better in fantasy points allowed to all five positions on the floor. Hassan Whiteside, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade are all secondary options here. Whiteside has immense upside thanks to his ability to rebound and defend. Bosh may struggle with the length of Kristaps Porzingis, although he has become more of a spot up shooter over the last few years. And finally, Wade has played well, but he sees limited minutes and will be defended by Arron Afflalo.

Philadelphia 76ers (Record: 0-14, Road: 0-7)

The Sixers continue their losing ways, as they are now 0-14 on the season. Wouldn’t it be great if the Sixers remained winless and the Warriors remained undefeated when the two teams squared off for the first time this season? Unfortunately, that’s not until January 30th, so the odds of that happening are next to none.

The Wolves have improved on the defensive end of the floor this season. They are ranked 13th or better in defensive efficiency, rebounding differential, and fantasy points allowed per game. While the total for this game may be set at only 200 points, this should be played at a relatively quick pace. Both of these teams have averaged at least 99 possessions per game this season.

The battle between the two Rookie of the Year candidates should be a fun one. Jahlil Okafor hasn’t quite been as productive as Karl-Anthony Towns, but both are having very nice rookie campaigns. Okafor is averaging 30 fantasy points per game this season and is still listed at an affordable price on both FanDuel and DraftKings. This would be a great matchup for Nerlens Noel, but his minutes are trending in the wrong direction. He has averaged 27 minutes in his last three games.

Minnesota Timberwolves (Record: 5-8, Home: 0-6)

The Wolves have one of the strangest records in the NBA. They are 5-2 on the road, yet they are 5-8 overall. They have yet to win a game at home. They have a good chance to end that losing streak tonight though, as they host the winless Sixers.

The Sixers have not been good defensively this season. They are ranked 20th or worse in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, rebounding differential, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Wolves are projected to score 103.8 points tonight, which is the second highest implied team total on the board.

Karl-Anthony Towns still isn’t seeing the 35 minutes per game that we like to see in daily fantasy, but he hasn’t needed it. He has been terrific this season, averaging 33.9 fantasy points per game. At this point in their careers, Towns is a much better defender than Jahlil Okafor. While both are in play tonight, I have to give the edge to Towns. Andrew Wiggins has struggled with consistency, but his production is trending in the right direction. Kevin Martin is an interesting play at shooting guard. He is projected to start at shooting guard, which means he could see closer to 30 minutes tonight, rather than the 25 that he is averaging on the season.

Detroit Pistons (Record: 7-6, Road: 4-4)

The Pistons have had an up and down season thus far and they have only played 13 games. They have looked great at times and they have looked dysfunctional at times. Tonight they head to Milwaukee to take on the Bucks, who have also struggled with consistency this season.

The Bucks have been one of the biggest surprises in the NBA this season. They have gone from being one of the best defensive teams in the NBA to being one of the worst. On the season, Milwaukee is ranked 21st or worse in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, rebounding differential, and fantasy points allowed per game. With all of their length, you would think that they would be better defensively and be a better rebounding team.

Andre Drummond has been a fantasy-MVP so far this season. While his streak of 14+ point, 15+ rebound games came to an end, he should be able to start a new one tonight. The Bucks are the worst rebounding team in the NBA. If there was ever a night to pay up for Drummond, this would be it. Marcus Morris and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are both strong cash game options tonight. They are both near the top of the league in minutes per game this season. Reggie Jackson is also in play, but given his volatile minutes, he is better suited for tournament play.

Milwaukee Bucks (Record: 5-8, Home: 3-3)

The Bucks have lost three games in a row and are now sitting at 5-8 on the season. This is not the start that Milwaukee fans were expecting, especially after acquiring Greg Monroe in the offseason. The Bucks will look to get back on track tonight, as they host the visiting Pistons.

This is a difficult matchup for the Bucks. The Pistons play at a slow pace and they are ranked eighth or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, rebounding differential, and fantasy points allowed per game this season. Milwaukee is only projected to score 94.8 points tonight, which is the fourth lowest on the board.

The Bucks have been a tough team to predict recently, both as a whole and individually. Jason Kidd has a deep and inconsistent rotation, which is never fun for anyone involved, especially when that team is losing. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greg Monroe are the two players whose minutes seem the safest, but neither player really stands out in their individual matchups. There will be a lot of revenge game narrative talk with Monroe today, but the Pistons have held opposing centers to the fewest fantasy points per game this season. Jabari Parker is worth a look on DraftKings ($4,200). He could see around 30 minutes of action tonight.
