Washington Wizards

Greetings Grinders! Tonight is the final slate of the NBA season. If you didn’t play this slate last season, check out this StatMuse query for an idea of how wild things can get. Kobe Bryant was the leading scorer as he took 50 shots in his final game. A couple of random names pop up on the list though as Norman Powell had 52.8 fantasy points and Jordan McRae had 50.5. The key to tonight’s slate is correctly identifying which teams have something to play for (ex: Bulls, Pacers, Heat, Celtics and Clippers) and then also finding the teams that are the most short-handed. If you can find a player like Norman Powell or Jordan McRae who is going to play heavy minutes and knows how to create his own shot, you want to use that player.

Before we get started, I also need to mention one other thing. This type of slate plays like a preseason slate. Anyone that is going to get heavy minutes is a viable option. The goal here is to point out which players are playing and then try to identify as many good situations as possible. If you come across a player in your research that I didn’t mention, it doesn’t mean they aren’t an option. If your logic is sound, trust your research and feel free to use that player. With that said, let’s go ahead and get things started as we have 14 games to cover.

The Wizards play a Heat team tonight that is in a must-win situation. The Wizards are already locked into the four seed in the East and have nothing to play for here. They’ve already ruled out Wall, Beal and Morris while Porter is questionable. That leaves Gortat and Porter as the only two starters playing but I wouldn’t expect many minutes here.

The best options on the Wizards are Kelly Oubre, Tomas Satoransky and Jason Smith. Of the three, Oubre and Satoransky are the better plays as they are not an integral part of the Wizards rotation. You can also make a case for Bojan Bogdanovic as well.

Miami Heat

The Heat are a long-shot to make the playoffs. They are in a three-way race with the Pacers and Bulls for the final two spots in the East. The Heat need one of those two teams to lose which is unlikely given that the Pacers play a Hawks team that is likely to rest starters and the Bulls play a Nets team that is resting players.

The Heat are still going to play to win this game though as they won’t know the outcome of the Pacers or Bulls game until after this one is over. Since salary is not going to be a big deal tonight the most common roster construction is going to be using regulars from the Heat, Bulls, Pacers, Celtics and Clippers and then filling in with value plays. Hassan Whiteside, Goran Dragic and James Johnson probably won’t play normal minutes but they should at least play three quarters or until this game is decided. They are all decent options I just wouldn’t recommend more than one of the three on the same lineup.

Philadelphia 76ers

I didn’t list out the 76ers that have been injured long-term as I assume you know those players are out. The 76ers will have 10 players available tonight including Dario Saric (24 minute limit), Tiago Splitter and Gerald Henderson. We’ll likely see the same thing here that we’ve seen over the past couple of weeks. Tiago Splitter will play under 10 minutes, Stauskas and Henderson will see somewhere around 20 each, Saric, Poythress and Anderson 20-24 minutes and Luwawu-Cabarrot, Holmes and McConnell 30+ minutes.

Given that the Knicks rank 20th in total FPPG we can target some 76ers here. I wouldn’t expect much more than what we’ve been getting out of them though. Richaun Holmes is probably the best option. He’s scored at least 27 points in each of the last four games.

New York Knicks

The Knicks have ruled out Kristaps Porzingis tonight but Carmelo Anthony is available to play. I assume that Anthony would be limited to under 30 minutes but his presence puts a damper on the other Knicks value plays. Mindaugas Kuzminskas is pretty much unplayable with Anthony playing. Ron Baker and Justin Holiday do retain some value though.

The main players to target are Ron Baker, Justin Holiday and Guillermo Hernangomez. Baker has played 30+ minutes in three of the last four games. He’s coming off a 32.6 gae against Toronto but his usage will most definitely suffer with Anthony on the court.

Atlanta Hawks

After clinching the fifth seed in the East last night the Hawks will rest their core players tonight. Four of their five starters from last night have been ruled out along with Bazemore. The Hawks will face a Pacers team that is in a must-win situation. The Pacers are middle-of-the pack in total FPPG allowed this season. The Hawks are a good place to look for value tonight.

We can expect youngsters Taurean Prince and Malcolm Delaney to play a decent amount of minutes. THe Hawks won’t have a true center available tonight which will leave Mike Muscala, Kris Humphries, Ersan Ilyasova and Ryan Kelly splitting duties at PF/C. Of those four, Humphries is probably the best per-minute option but he’s not a lock to play huge minutes. I would mainly stick with Prince and Delaney here.

Indiana Pacers

The Pacers face a must-win game here and should have everyone available. Vegas expects them to win this one handily as they are favored by 12.5. The total here is one of the lower of the night but the Pacers team total is still a respectable 107.3 which is middle of the pack for tonight’s slate.

Paul George is averaging 51.9 FPPG over the last five games. He’s just behind Jimmy Butler as the top overall SF play and you could even make a case for George over Butler. The other core Pacers are in play as well. Jeff Teague is averaging 31.8 FPPG over the last five games. Myles Turner gets a matchup upgrade now that he doesn’t have to deal with Howard and Millsap inside and even Thaddeus Young is in play strictly as a punt option.

Dallas Mavericks

After Tony Romo Appreciation night in Dallas last night the Mavericks head to Memphis tonight for their final game. Dirk Nowitzki and J.J. Barea have already been ruled out (along with Seth Curry) which means the Mavericks don’t need to deactivate anyone else. That means we need to use caution with players like Harrison Barnes and Wesley Matthews. Neither player warmed up last night despite not being ruled out prior to lock.

The Mavericks will happily close out the season riding a youth movement. Yogi Ferrell, Dwight Powell, and Nicolas Brussino are the players to target here. Ferrell has at least 19 fantasy points in four straight games. Given that Dallas and Memphis rank 28th and 29th in pace I’ll call all the Mavericks secondary options tonight.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies are headed for an opening round series with the Spurs. Similar to the other playoff teams, we can expect the Grizzlies to either rest their starters or limit their minutes. Coach David Fizdale hasn’t announced his plans for tonight but has been picking and choosing spots to rest core players. We will get some idea of what the Grizzlies plan to do when they announce inactives. Even if you don’t count James Ennis, they have 13 healthy players. They will have to deactivate someone.

I’m not going out of my way to target anyone on the Grizzlies but if I did it would be the younger players like Troy Daniels, Wade Baldwin and Andrew Harrison. All three have performed well when given opportunity to play this season. With that said, this game is still the lowest over/under on the board and we aren’t sure yet what the Grizzlies plan to do.

Toronto Raptors

The Raptors do not have anything to play for tonight and will likely be without DeMar DeRozan. With that said, I wouldn’t assume that Kyle Lowry is going to play heavy minutes. He could realistically be capped somewhere around 24 minutes. I wouldn’t be opposed to using Delon Wright as a low-owned punt option but he’s not an elite option unless Lowry gets ruled out or we hear about a form minutes limit.

The best option here is Norman Powell. He’ll likely start in place of DeRozan. Powell has started 17 games this season. He’s averaging 22.2 FPPG in those starts. Tonight, he draws a matchup against a Cavaliers team that is 29th defending SG. The Cavaliers also rank 28th in overall defensive efficiency since the All-Star break.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Update: With James, Irving and Love ruled out the Cavaliers are significantly less attractive. Deron Wiliams is the top play here but I expect the Cavaliers to spread the minutes pretty evenly among the 10 players they have available.

The Cavaliers are going to be a tough team to handicap tonight. They still technically have a chance to grab the number one seed in the East if they win and the Celtics lose. That doesn’t appear to be a priority for the Cavaliers though or they wouldn’t have rested Irving and James on Monday. They seem perfectly content with the second seed in the East.

On the final day of last season, the Cavaliers rested nearly all their veterans allowing their younger players like Jordan McRae to play minutes into the upper 30s. That’s a little bit less possible this year though as the Cavaliers don’t really only have two players you would consider young (James Jones and Kay Felder). They are working to sign Edy Tavares from the D-League and Dahntay Jones. If both players are available tonight the Cavaliers will have to deactivate two other players besides LeBron James.

Kay Felder is the player I really want to use here but he’s listed as questionable after injuring his leg against Miami on Monday. If Felder is expected to play full minutes I might bump him up to an elite play. With the rest of the Cavaliers, we need to hear what Coach Lue says prior to the game. They just played an overtime game against Miami where Deron Williams played 46 minutes while Shumpert and Smith played 39 minutes. In fact, just about every regular on this team played 30+ minutes.

If the Cavaliers start Kyrie Irving and he’s looking at close to 30 minutes he’s an elite play without LeBron James. This season, Irving has a 43.6% usage rate and averages 51.5 fantasy points per 36 minutes, with James off the court.
