Phoenix Suns

Record: 14-33 — Road: 4-20 — Last 10: 2-8

The Suns are not only playing poorly, but they have also been playing short-handed. They have lost eight of their last ten games and are only 4-20 on the road this season. They draw a mediocre fantasy matchup tonight against the Knicks in New York. I should note that this is the first game of the night and it starts at 7:30 ET, which gives us an extra half hour to tinker with our lineups.

The Knicks have been an average defensive team this season, ranking between 12th and 18th in all four of the defensive categories listed above. The Suns are large underdogs here, but given all of the injuries, there are a couple of targets that should be on our radar. Brandon Knight and Ronnie Price are both out tonight, while T.J. Warren is questionable and Jon Leuer is probable. With Leuer and Markieff Morris back in the mix, Tyson Chandler and Alex Len are better suited for tournaments.

Elite Plays

Archie Goodwin

The Suns’ backcourt duo is a lot cheaper on FanDuel than they are on DraftKings. Goodwin is an elite play on both sites though. As a starter this season (five games), he is averaging 18.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.6 blocks/steals. The way I see it, we are getting a starting point guard that should see 35+ minutes at a price under $6,000. Sign me up.

Devin Booker

Booker is still an elite play on FanDuel, but is more of a secondary play on DraftKings. Not only is his price higher on DK, but his backcourt mate, Archie Goodwin, is listed as a shooting guard. Booker comes into tonight’s game in great form, averaging 27 fantasy points in 37.8 minutes over his last five games.

New York Knicks

Record: 22-26 — Home: 13-10 — Last 10: 4-6

The Knicks have lost six of their last ten games, but are still fighting for the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. They are listed as 9-point favorites tonight at home against the Suns. This is as favorable of a matchup as you are going to find on the schedule tonight. The Knicks are projected to score 106.8 points, which is 7.3 points higher than their season average.

The Suns have arguably been the worst defensive team in the NBA over the last three weeks of play. On the season, they are now ranked 26th or worse in all four of the defensive categories above. We should get an update on the Knicks’ injuries well before tip-off. At the time of writing this, Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis, and Jose Calderon are all listed as questionable.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Record: 32-12 — Road: 14-9 — Last 10: 7-3

The Cavaliers have won seven of their last ten games and are now 32-12 overall. Tonight they head to Detroit to take on the Pistons in a game that is expected to be competitive throughout. The Cavaliers are 5-point favorites with their team total set at 106 points, which is 4.4 points higher than their season average.

The Pistons have been tough defensively this season, ranking tenth or better in all four of the defensive categories listed above. Despite the difficult matchup on paper, the Cavaliers have the seventh highest team total on the board. This is also one of the few times where we can actually project their starters to see a full complement of minutes.

Elite Plays

Tristan Thompson

Given his price point, Thompson is more of a secondary option on DraftKings. However, he is still an elite play on FanDuel at a bargain-bin price of only $4,500. He has played well over his last five games, averaging 20.5 fantasy points in 27.2 minutes per contest. If he can stay out of foul trouble (which is a fairly big if), he should see around 35 minutes tonight against the Pistons.

Secondary Plays

LeBron James

Anytime the spread is close in a Cavaliers’ game, James deserves consideration. He should see minutes in the mid to upper-30s tonight and he has shown that he is matchup-proof. The reason that he isn’t listed as an elite play is twofold. First, his usage rate is down since Kyrie Irving came back from injury. And second, Kevin Durant is only a bit more expensive.

Kevin Love

Love is one of the most frustrating fantasy players in DFS. He seems to play well and then once everyone starts to notice, he puts up a dud or two. Everything checks out for him tonight though, as he takes on Ersan Ilyasova and the Pistons, who are ranked 21st against power forwards this season.

Detroit Pistons

Record: 25-21 — Home: 15-7 — Last 10: 5-5

The Pistons have some impressive wins on their resume this season. They have a chance to add a notch on their belt tonight with a win over the Cavaliers at home. This may not be a great matchup for fantasy production, but Vegas is expecting a close, high-scoring game. The Pistons are projected to score 101 points, which is slightly lower than their season average.

The Cavaliers have been an elite team defensively this season, ranking seventh or better in all four of the defensive categories listed above. While Vegas is expecting the Pistons to score close to their season average, this is not a matchup that we need to go out of our way to target. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Marcus Morris, and Ersan Ilyasova are all too expensive given the matchup.

Elite Plays

NONE

Secondary Plays

Andre Drummond

Drummond has been extremely inconsistent recently. After poor outings against the Nuggets and the Jazz, he bounced back with 25 points and 18 rebounds against the Sixers. While his matchup against the Cavaliers looks tough on paper, he posted a nice stat line of 25 points and 18 rebounds (strange) against them in their first meeting this season.

Reggie Jackson

Jackson rarely plays more than 30-32 minutes, but he could see a few extra tonight in a big game against the Cavaliers at home. Jackson has been productive this season, averaging over a fantasy point per minute. His price is also appealing on both FanDuel and DraftKings. There may be better cash game options, but I love Jackson in tournaments.

Orlando Magic

Record: 20-24 — Road: 8-13 — Last 10: 1-9

The Magic can’t seem to buy a win lately. They have lost nine of their last ten games and have fallen to 20-24 on the season. They head to Boston tonight to take on the Celtics. The Magic are only projected to score 98.3 points, which is the 12th highest team total of the 18 teams in action tonight.

The Celtics have an underrated defense. On the season, they are ranked 11th or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game this season. The Magic come into this game relatively healthy. They will be without C.J. Watson and Joe Harris, but neither player carries any fantasy appeal when healthy anyway.

Elite Plays

Aaron Gordon

I went back and forth on whether I should list Gordon as an elite play. His minutes are always in question, which is a byproduct of playing for Scott Skiles. However, he played 37 minutes the other night against the Bucks and he has scored at least 21 fantasy points in each of his last three starts. He also draws a nice matchup against the Celtics, who are ranked 26th against power forwards.

Secondary Plays

Nikola Vucevic

Vucevic is a borderline elite play tonight, but is a little risky given the fact that the Magic are such large underdogs. I’d rather target DeAndre Jordan at a similar price point. While the blowout factor is also present for the Clippers, they are at least on the right side of the blowout. Vucevic has been playing well though, averaging 35.7 fantasy points in his last five games.

Victor Oladipo

Oladipo is a little too expensive on DraftKings, but is certainly worth a look on FanDuel. Over his last five games, he is averaging 36.6 minutes and 27.5 fantasy points per contest. His matchup against Avery Bradley is a tough one, but the upside is certainly there at his price point.

Boston Celtics

Record: 26-21 — Home: 13-10 — Last 10: 7-3

The Celtics have won seven of their last ten games and are now 26-21 on the season. They draw a favorable matchup tonight against the Magic, who are playing their worst basketball of the season. The Celtics are projected to score 106.8 points. Not only is that the third highest team total on the board, but it is also 2.3 points higher than their season average.

The Magic are ranked seventh in points allowed per game this season, but they haven’t been nearly as effective defensively over the last three weeks. The Celtics should be at full strength for tonight’s game at home. We may have to factor in a potential blowout here, as they are 8.5-point favorites. The Celtics have been involved in quite a few blowouts this season.

Secondary Plays

Isaiah Thomas

The former face of Pizza Guys is now an NBA All-Star. He was names as a reserve for the Eastern Conference yesterday and in my eyes, he deserved it. The Celtics have played well this season and he is the engine of this offense. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Magic at home.

Miami Heat

Record: 25-21 — Road: 10-12 — Last 10: 3-7

This game shouldn’t take too long to break down. It is a matchup between two of the slowest-paced teams in the NBA. The Heat come into tonight’s game in awful form, losing seven of their last ten games. They are listed as 1-point underdogs with their team total set at only 95 points.

The good news for the Heat is that they draw a favorable fantasy matchup against the Bucks. Despite their slow pace of play, the Bucks are ranked 20th or worse in all four of the defenisve categories listed above. Goran Dragic is expected to return to the lineup, which will cut into the minutes of Beno Udrih and Tyler Johnson. Hassan Whiteside is listed as questionable.

Elite Plays

NONE

Secondary Plays

Chris Bosh

Bosh is really the only Heat player on my radar tonight and that’s only if Hassan Whiteside is ruled out. Dwyane Wade could draw some interest, but I don’t love him with Goran Dragic back in the mix. Bosh is a safe play at power forward. He draws a nice matchup against the Bucks and he has averaged 31.9 fantasy points over his last five games.

Milwaukee Bucks

Record: 20-28 — Home: 13-7 — Last 10: 5-5

The Bucks have played better recently – and while I’m not saying that Jason Kidd is a bad coach, they did hit their stride when he was away from the team. Kidd is back on the sidelines now, as the Bucks host the visiting Heat. The Bucks are only projected to score 96 points, which is the fifth lowest team total on the board.

The Heat have been one of the best defensive teams in the NBA this season, ranking fifth or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. The Heat’s defensive efficiency obviously takes a big hit when Hassan Whiteside is out though, so keep an eye on his status for tonight. Greg Monroe could be an interesting tournament play in the event that Whiteside were ruled out.

Elite Plays

NONE

Secondary Plays

Khris Middleton

I typically like to avoid taking players against the Heat, but I have to at least mention Middleton with the tear that he has been on. He has score at least 33 fantasy points in eight of his last nine games and he has averaged 37.4 over his last five outings. He will be low owned tonight, making him an intriguing tournament play.

Houston Rockets

Record: 25-23 — Road: 10-12 — Last 10: 6-4

The Rockets have been playing good basketball recently, winning six of their last ten games. They draw one of their toughest tests to date, as they take on the Thunder in Oklahoma City. This game is littered with fantasy goodness and we should try to get as much exposure to it as we can. The Rockets are projected to score 106.8 points, which is the third highest team total on the board.

The Thunder have an above-average defense, ranking at or above the league average in all four of the defensive categories listed above. Despite the difficult matchup on paper, pace can trump all (we talk about this often with the Warriors). This should be one of the fastest-paced games on the board. My plan is to avoid Dwight Howard tonight. He only played 23 minutes in his first game back from injury and has to face a tough Thunder frontcourt anyway.

Elite Plays

James Harden

The first couple of seasons after leaving Oklahoma City, Harden didn’t play too well against his former team. However, he seems to have figured it out, averaging 31.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 2.8 blocks/steals. In what should be a fast-paced, high-scoring game, Harden is the top shooting guard target on the board tonight.

I have mixed feelings on Ariza tonight. On the one hand, he is a streaky shooter that has been an fire recently. This is also a good game environment for him to excel in. On the other hand, his price has come up across the industry and if he starts at the four again tonight, he will match up against Serge Ibaka. Ariza is a viable option tonight, but I don’t consider him a must.

Beverley is a sneaky value play tonight. He minutes and production are both up over his last five games and he typically sees a boost in minutes when the Rockets face elite point guards. Oklahoma City Thunder

Record: 35-13 — Home: 21-5 — Last 10: 9-1

The Thunder are still a ways behind the Warriors and Spurs in the West, but they are clearly in that upper echelon. They have won nine of their last ten games and are now 35-13 on the season. Tonight’s game against the Rockets has a whopping total of 221.5 points. The Thunder are projected to score 114.8 points, which is easily the highest team total on the board.

The Rockets have been one of the top teams to target players against this season. They are ranked 25th or worse in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and fantasy points allowed per game. Andre Roberson and Cameron Payne have both been ruled out tonight. Dion Waiters will continue to start at shooting guard.

Elite Plays

Russell Westbrook

There haven’t been many games with totals over 220 points this season. As long as this game stays close, Westbrook and Kevin Durant could both reach value. That’s how great of a spot the Thunder are in tonight. They should both be considered the top plays at their respective positions. I generally don’t like to use them together though. I’d rather pair one of them with Damian Lillard or James Harden.

As mentioned above, this is a game where Durant and Russell Westbrook could both reach value. The Thunder have the highest team total on the board and Durant comes into the game in great form, averaging 49.1 fantasy points in his last five outings. Durant’s price has come up, but he should be the most popular target at small forward tonight and for good reason.

Even though Ibaka’s minutes are up over his last five games, his usage rate and production are both down. While he has been a bit of a disappointment recently, he deserves consideration against a Rockets’ defense that is ranked dead last in fantasy points allowed to power forwards. Ibaka can currently be targeted at a discount on both FanDuel and DraftKings.
