Stewart Cink is a great place to look for salary relief this week

Stewart Cink will play his 11th Honda Classic this week and is in a good spot to bounce back from a couple of disappointing missed cuts on the west coast swing. Cink has made his last seven cuts at PGA National finishing no worse than a T41. Typically a good wind player, Cink should fair well on at a tournament that often has its fair share of wind. While you would love a top ten from Cink this week, it’s important to understand that there is a reason for his decreased price. Cink only made three top ten’s in the last 18 months, but he has played consistently enough golf that you can expect a chance for a made cut and possibly a top 30 or better finish. If you are looking to fit in top named players this week, then a top 30 or better from Cink at his more than reasonable price makes him a great option in almost any format this week.

Vijay Singh has been ruled out

The 54-year-old Singh withdrew from this week’s event mid-Tuesday morning and has been replaced by Keith Mitchell. Due to the timing of his WD, Mitchell will not be available in this week’s field. At this time we have no report of injury associated with Singh.

DraftKings projections are live and Adam Scott ranks as a top play

Projections are live for The Honda Classic and Adam Scott ranks near the top in terms of Pt/$/K on DraftKings. A poorly timed three-putt on Friday’s final hole looked to have this former number one ranked player in the world on the wrong side of the cut line at last week’s Genesis Open. Luckily for Scott, the course played firm and fast for the remainder of the day and he ended up making the cut on the number. Still priced low due to his overall recent play, this former Honda Classic Champion ranks as a great overall play for this weeks tournament. In his last three starts at this event, Scott has a win and two top 15 finishes. Getting to play on the weekend last week should be a good boost to Scott, as the extra reps can only help him knock off the rust from his layoff. Motivation is not always the easiest thing to handicap, but Scott has a lot to play for this week. Currently ranked in the 58th position in the world, Scott has to get back inside the top 50 prior to the end of this week to ensure a spot at the WGC Mexico Championship. PGA National Champion Course demands the style of golf that fits Scott’s game, as his ability to hit both accurate and long golf shots plays well on this very hard course. Scott might fly under the radar again this week, and the combination of his skill set and great course history makes him a great play at an even better discount.

PGA rosters lock in 20 minutes, and no major news to report

With the exception of the Bill Haas news early this week, all is quiet on the injury front ahead of round number one. Rosters lock at 9:40 eastern time zone today, so if you have any last minute roster edits please do so at this time. Tiger Woods will compete in this event for the first time in over a decade. Making his second start this season, Woods switched driver shafts ahead of this event in order to hopefully improve on his awful driving performance at the Farmers Open. Woods went with a stiffer shaft that he last used in the 2015 season. The PGA gave golf fans a great pairing to watch over the first two rounds as Tiger is joined by Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas. Good luck this week grinders, we will keep an eye on the injury front up until lock.

Charl Scwhartzel could get over looked this week

We are to the point of the season where top-ranked players who divide their time between the European and PGA Tours begin to make their 2018 debuts. With the multiple WGC events over the next few weeks, players like Charl Schwartzel make their way over to American soil in order to prepare for the big events that lie ahead. With so many big named players in the field, it’s easy for very talented players like Schwartzel to fly a bit under the radar. Currently ranked 44th in the world, Schwartzel has built his career up through steady play on both tours. Known as a great ball striker, and a streaky putter, this former Masters Champion has a decent track record at Riviera. With a 4 for 5 cut record including two five or better finishes, Schwartzel is a player worth getting roster consideration this week. With all of the fanfare and ownership congregating around Thomas Pieters, Schwartzel makes for an interesting pivot at a much lower ownership.

Injury situations to monitor ahead of round one

As the PGA Tour gets ready for the last leg of the west coast swing there are a few injury situations worth keeping an eye on ahead of round one. Outside of the Bill Haas news this morning, there have been no other players to withdraw from The Genesis Open. There are however a couple of players to keep an eye on in terms of potential injuries. Charley Hoffman pulled out of last week’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am midway through round three due to a sore back. As of now, Hoffman is still in the field, and the risk of an injury withdrawal during the tournament remains a real threat. If he were to play healthy, then Hoffman becomes an interesting play at his low predicted ownership. Hoffman’s T4 at last year’s Genesis Open reminds us of his potential to compete on this type of course. J.J. Spaun is also in the field this week after pulling out of the Waste Management Open a few weeks ago. Spaun cited an injury as the reason for this withdrawal but did not specify the nature of his injury. Spaun has a lower projected ownership than that of Hoffman and appears to be less of an appealing roster option. Prior to his injury last week, Hoffman had been playing great golf and could be a great low owned dart that has high upside. The Choice to roster Hoffman is for those not scared of a withdrawal risk. Rosters lock at 9:40 EST time tomorrow and we will update all news prior to that time.

Jimmy Walker looks to build on a good week

Jimmy Walker has the daunting task of dealing with the effects of Lyme Disease. This one time Ryder Cup hero informed the world last April that he had contracted the disease. Walker had one of his worst seasons on tour last year, but he still has hope that he can compete at the highest levels despite his physical ailment. After starting his 2018 PGA season with three missed cuts Walker posted a T8 at last week’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Currently ranked in the 82nd position in the world, Walker looks to keep the momentum going as he prepares to play in his ninth Genesis Open. Still priced low due to his poor play over the last 8 months Walker represents a great value for the week. In order to fit in top priced players into roster builds this week, you will need to find value plays that offer more upside than just making the cut. Over his last 30 rounds at Riviera Country Club, Walker is 31 under par and represents a great chance to buy upside at a discount.

Brendan Steele is a popular play amongst experts this week

Brendan Steele is quietly becoming one of the more consistent players on tour. Over the duration of his last 80 starts on tour, Steele made his way to the weekend 81% of the time. While making cuts is nice, Steele has managed to do more than just hang around on the weekend. Since the start of the 2015 season, Steele has posted 36 top 25 or better finishes including two wins. This type of solid play has Steele often pegged as a cash game staple for many in the DFS community. Currently ranked inside the top 40 in the world, Steele comes into this week once again playing some great golf. With one win under his belt already this season and a game built for Riviera, it’s no surprise to see Steele rank out as a top player in the mid pricing tier amongst our experts. Steele will tee it up in his seventh Genesis Open this week and will look to improve on his two top 15 finishes at Riviera. At $7,900 Steele makes a great play in all formats this week.

Adam Scott needs to play well in order to ensure WGC status moving forward

Adam Scott’s world ranking has been on the decline over the last ten months. Scott found himself inside the top ten in the world after his T6 at last year’s Players Championship, but overall poor play has this one time major champion in danger of missing some of the WGC events this season. Currently ranked in the 51st position in the world, Scott has to get back inside the top 50 prior to the end of the Honda Classic to ensure a spot at the WGC Mexico Championship. If Scott continues to drop out of the top 64 in the rankings he would also miss the WGC match play at the end of March. While Scott performed poorly at last week’s ATT Pebble Beach Open, there is some hope that this week’s venue will provide a chance for him to get back on track. In addition to his win at the 2005 Genesis Open, Scott has only finished outside the top 20 twice in his nine starts at Riveria. Scott is an elite ball striker that should play well once again at this course. Poor play has created a big discount on Scott this week, but even at $7,400, he is still trending towards a sub 10% ownership. Many in the industry are off Scott until signs of life appear in his game, but this is a great spot to get back on a talented golfer ahead of that time.

Tony Finau looks to bounce back after missing cut

To the surprise of many, Tony Finau missed the cut at The Waste Managment Open. Known for his ability to hit the ball a long way, Finau had the perfect setup to play well that week, but he faltered on Friday and left a large majority of supporters out in the cold. Finau returns to the tour this week, and once again should have the skill set needed to play well at this bombers paradise. Finau has only made one cut in two tries at Riviera, as he missed a short putt on his last hole in The 2017 Genesis Open. Many in the industry will look at his lack of course history when making selections this week, but Finau is just too talented to ignore at this price. A made cut at last year’s tournament could have impacted Finau’s value greatly for his year’s event, so you can gain an edge by looking past his 2 for 3 in missed cuts at Riviera. While many in the industry see Finau as mostly a GPP play, the chance to get a talented golfer at a discount in ownership also makes him a great play for cash. At $8,200, Finau has the ability to do more than just make the cut. With a game built around making birdie’s, four rounds from Finau at low ownership could be the difference in your cash game lineups this week. The choice to roster Finau for this year’s Genesis Open has less to do with his course history, and more to do with an evaluation of his talent in the long run.

Bill Haas has withdrawn from The Genesis Open

Haas was involved in a car accident late on Tuesday night. The driver who was a close family friend of the Haas family was pronounced dead at the scene. Haas was released from the hospital early this morning but will not play this week. Initially reported to be in serious condition, Haas is now slated to recover in full, but he has withdrawn from this week’s tournament in order to head home. In an official statement from his agent, Haas escaped serious injury but is obviously shaken up.

K.J. Choi looks to stay perfect at The Genesis Open

At the age of 47, K.J. Choi is at the point in his career where he can begin to think about his future on The Champions Tour. This 8 time PGA Tour winner last stepped into the winner’s circle at the 2011 Players Championship. Choi enters the 2018 season looking to bounce back from one of his worst seasons on tour. Already off to a decent start this season, Choi gets to play on a course that very much fits his game. Choi is 17 for 17 in cuts made at Rivera Country Club including 5 top 10 or better finishes. With an average finish position inside the top 25 for his career at The Genisis Open, Choi has only finished outside the top 33 in this tournament twice. Reasonably priced at $7,000 you would think that Choi would find his way into a high spot on our expert ranking for this week. With so much value to be had below $8,000 this week, Choi is flying under the radar and could be a sneaky play this week. Whether for cash or GPP’s Choi provides enough upside at his cost to merit roster consideration this week.

Thomas Pieters set to make his 2018 PGA Tour debut

With his second-place finish at last year’s Genisis Open, Thomas Pieters began to make his presence known on the PGA Tour. This 26-year-old player from Belgium divides his time between both the European and PGA Tours. Currently ranked inside the top 40 in the world, Pieters posted 5 top 15 or better finishes in 12 starts last season. Last week we saw a very talented Rafael Cabrera Bello priced too low in comparison to his talent on DraftKings thus making him one of the more popular plays of the week. Early ownership projections have Pieters headed in that same direction. With the proven talent to compete with the biggest names on Tour, Pieters feels a bit underpriced at $7,700. Pieters has played twice this calendar year on the European Tour, including a fifth-place finish at The Abu Dhabi Championship last month. Known for his length off the tee, Pieters should once again be in play at Rivera and makes for a great play in all format.

DraftKings projections are live and Chez Reavie ranks as a top play

Projections are live for The Genesis Open are live and Chez Reavie ranks near the top in terms of Pt/$/K on DraftKings. Currently ranked in the top 50 in the world, Reavie is playing some of the best golf of his career. Since the start of the wraparound season, Reavie is 9 for 9 in made cuts with 8 top 25 or better finishes. This 36-year-old tour veteran comes into The Genesis Open on the heels of back to back second place finishes and appears to be an obvious value for his $8k price tag this week. With only two cuts made in seven trips to Rivera, Reavie lacks the course history that some might look for when making roster choices this week. With a current form this hot, it’s fair to say that course history should mean less, and Reavie is a great play in all formats this week.

PGA rosters lock in 10 minutes, and no major news to report

As expected it’s quiet on the injury front ahead of opening round tee times for The AT&T Pebble Beach Open. Defending Champion Jordan Spieth looks to bounce back from a rare missed cut at last week’s Waste Managment Open. Spieth is currently projected to the fourth highest owned player in this week’s field. Spieth will look to become the first player to win this event in back to back years since Dustin Johnson’s wins in the 2009 and 2010 season. With 32 of the top 100 in the official world golf rankings in this week’s field, Spieth will have plenty of strong competition as he prepares to defend his title. Good luck this week grinders, we will keep an eye on the injury front up until lock.
