MLB Grind Down: Friday, July 17th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.
Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing.

Kansas City at Chicago White Sox – 2:10 PM EST
After what felt like a lengthy All-Star break, welcome back to the wonderful world of daily fantasy baseball. There is one early game on the schedule today. This game is only included in the All-Day slate, so I will keep the analysis brief. Jeff Samardzija is the recommended pitching option over Chris Young, although there are better options at his price point in the later games. The Royals offense can be avoided altogether, while Jose Abreu and Adam Eaton are in play for the White Sox.

Analysis: Fernandez takes the mound the for Marlins tonight in what will be his third start of the season. He has pitched well in his first two outings, striking out 15 batters over in 13 innings of work. He has a good chance to start the second half of the season off on a high note, as the Phillies are ranked dead least in wOBA (.284) against right-handed pitching this season. With Clayton Kershaw scratched, Fernandez becomes the highest rated pitcher on the schedule tonight.

Analysis: Morgan hasn’t been terrible, but his numbers are nothing to write home about either. So far this season, he has a 4.56 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 16.7%. He draws a difficult matchup against a Marlins’ offense that is actually very good against left-handed pitching. They are ranked third in team wOBA (.326) against southpaws this season. Morgan can safely be avoided in all league formats.
Pitcher Rating:35.5

Miami
The Marlins are still missing Giancarlo Stanton, but they find themselves in a favorable matchup tonight against Adam Morgan. Morgan has given up a .419 wOBA to right-handed hitters this season, but I wouldn’t completely rule out the left-handed bats of Dee Gordon and Christian Yelich.

Analysis: Clayton Kershaw start was pushed back to Saturday, so Bolsinger will draw the start for the Dodgers tonight. He has really pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 2.93 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 25.2%. He gets to face a depleted Nationals’ offense tonight, although he does have to face them on the road. Bolsinger is worth a look as a value SP2, but there are safer options on single-pitcher sites.

Pitchers per PA: 3.89 (Rank: 4)
Analysis: Zimmermann draws the start for the Nationals tonight, as they host the Dodgers. He will look to continue the good form that he took into the All-Star break. Over the last month, he has a 3.22 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 21.3%. The issue tonight is his matchup. On the season, the Dodgers are ranked second in wOBA (.336) against right-handed pitching. Zimmermann is a bit overpriced for his matchup tonight.

LA Dodgers
While the Dodgers are one of the best offenses in baseball when facing a right-handed pitcher, they draw a difficult matchup against Jordan Zimmermann. Since the start of the 2014 season, he has held left and right-handed hitters under a .305 wOBA. Adrian Gonzalez and Joc Pederson are in play, but are both secondary options at their respective positions.

Analysis: Montgomery could be in for some serious regression in the second half of the season. His ERA is nearly two full runs lower than his SIERA. This causes him to be overpriced on fantasy sites. He is an easy avoid tonight against the Yankees, who are ranked fifth in wOBA (.319) and fifth in strikeout rate (18.6%) against left-handed pitching this season. Run support will also be an issue for Montgomery, as the Yankees have their ace on the bump tonight.

Analysis: Tanaka has pitched well since returning from injury, posting a 3.25 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 21.4%. After throwing 114 pitches in his last start, we no longer have to be worried about a pitch count. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Mariners, who are ranked 24th in wOBA (.296) and 26th in strikeout rate (22.1%) against right-handed pitching this season. He may not have as much upside as Jose Fernandez, but he’s considerably cheaper on both FanDuel and DraftKings.

The Mariners are hoping to turn their offensive woes around in the second half of the season, but with a matchup against Masahiro Tanaka, they may get off to a rocky start. Tanaka is a high-strikeout pitcher that has held left and right-handed hitters under a .305 wOBA over the last two seasons.

The Yankees are large favorites tonight at home against Mike Montgomery, who has had some reverse-splits in his short time in the majors. Analysis: Odorizzi is looking to start the second half of the season on a strong note, although he is going to have his hands full tonight with the Blue Jays. On the season, Toronto is ranked fifth in wOBA (.327) against right-handed pitching. To make matters worse, Odorizzi has to face them in the Rogers Centre, which is basically the American League’s version of Coors Field. Analysis: Hutchison has pitched well over the last month, posting a 3.60 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.4%. Even though he has to pitch at the Rogers Centre, he draws one of the most favorable matchups on the board. On the season, the Rays are ranked 26th in wOBA (.294) and 26th in strikeout rate (22.1%) against right-handed pitching. Hutchison is a bit overpriced on FanDuel, but he’s definitely worth a look as an SP2 on DraftKings at a price of only $6,700.

Analysis: Sanchez has pitched well over the last two seasons, posting a 3.72 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 20.7%. He draws a plus-matchup in terms of strikeout potential, as the Orioles have the third-highest strikeout rate (22.7%) against right-handed pitching this season. The blowup potential is also there though, as Baltimore is ranked eighth in wOBA (.321) against right-handers. Sanchez is an appealing tournament option, but he can be avoided in cash games.

Baltimore
The Orioles draw a difficult matchup tonight against Anibal Sanchez, who has held left and right-handed hitters under a .315 wOBA over the last two seasons. Matt Wieters and Chris Davis are in play, but both are secondary options at their respective positions.

Detroit
The Tigers may be without their best hitter in Miguel Cabrera, but their offense hasn’t missed a beat. They have the highest team wOBA of any team over the last 14 days of play. Ubaldo Jimenez has given up a higher wOBA to left-handed hitters than he has to right-handed hitters, making Victor Martinez and Alex Avila attractive options tonight.
