Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.353 (Rank: 6) — Strikeout Rate: 19.3% (Rank: 14)
Pitchers per PA: 3.76 (Rank: 20)
Analysis: Arrieta owns a 2.86 SIERA with an impressive strikeout rate of 27.0% over the past two seasons. He comes into tonight’s start in good form and he gets to face a Cardinals’ offense that is missing one of their best hitters in Matt Holliday. The issue here is that the Cardinals are one of the worst matchups for a pitcher. They rarely strike out and they are ranked fifth in wOBA (.326) against right-handed pitching this season. Arrieta may be worth a look in tournaments, but he can be avoided in cash games.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.329 (Rank: 11) — Strikeout Rate: 22.5% (Rank: 25)
Pitchers per PA: 3.99 (Rank: 1)
Analysis: Lackey has pitched well over the last month, posting a 3.63 SIERA and a strikeout rate of 20.0%. He draws a plus matchup in terms of strikeout potential, as the Cubbies have the second-highest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. Lackey seems a bit overpriced at the moment though and he is a very small favorite, which makes it difficult to rely on him picking up the win. He’s a pitcher that I’ll likely have no exposure to tonight, even though he has a decent matchup at home.

This is an interesting game because there is little fantasy appeal for the pitchers and for both offenses. John Lackey is an above-average pitcher that typically pitches well at home. Anthony Rizzo and Miguel Montero are in play, but both are secondary options at their respective positions.

Since the start of 2014, Jake Arrieta has held left and right-handed hitters under a .265 wOBA, which basically takes all of the Cardinals’ hitters out of the elite play consideration. Jason Heyward has been swinging a hot bat though and may be worth a look in tournaments, as his ownership level will be extremely low.

Analysis: Volquez has the unfortunate task of facing the A’s in Oakland. The A’s are always one of the worst pitching matchups, because they take a ton of pitches, they don’t strike out often, and they get a ton of base hits. Volquez is overpriced for his matchup tonight and he should be avoided in all league formats.

Analysis: We go from one bad pitching matchup in the A’s to another one in the Royals. On the season, the Royals have the lowest strikeout rate of any team against right-handed pitching. Even though Hahn has been a serviceable starter for Oakland this season, he an be avoided in a difficult matchup against half of the American League All-Star team.

Even though Jesse Hahn isn’t a recommended fantasy option, that doesn’t mean that we have to load up on hitters against him. This is still a bad matchup for the Royals, as Hahn has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .300 wOBA over the last two season. The A’s offense has been scoring runs in bunches recently. They will look to keep the hot streak going tonight against Edinson Volquez at home. Volquez gives up fairly equal splits to hitters from both sides of the plate, but the left-handed hitters are the ones that you want to target in this A’s lineup tonight.

Analysis: Walker has really pitched well over the last month, posting a 2.84 SIERA with an impressive strikeout rate of 28.4%. The statistic that stands out to me the most during that stretch is his walk rate of only 2.2%. He has always had electric stuff, he just hasn’t had great command. If he can control the strike zone moving forward, he could be in for a very strong second half of the season. While he has been pitching well, I’d like to see another quality start or two before targeting him in daily leagues.

Over the last month he has a 3.84 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 20.0%. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Mariners, who are ranked 29th in wOBA (.287) and 28th in strikeout rate (22.9%) against right-handed pitching. Shoemaker makes a solid play in both tournaments and as a value SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.

San Francisco
Since the start of 2014, Chad Bettis has given up a .323+ wOBA to hitters from both sides of the plate. He has really struggled against right-handed hitters, making Buster Posey and Matt Duffy great plays at their respective positions. Meanwhile, Angel Pagan offers good value in the outfield.
