Ervin Santana : FD: $7,500 — DK: $4,800

New York Yankees Offense (2015)

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.279 (Rank: 30) — Strikeout Rate: 21.4% (Rank: 21)
Pitchers per PA: 3.89 (Rank: 4)
Analysis: Santana has been in awful form recently, posting a 5.50 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 9.2% over the last month of play. That form will likely continue today against the Yankees, who are ranked fifth in team wOBA and eighth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. There are a limited number of pitching choices in the early slate, but Santana should not be on your radar against the Yankees.
Pitcher Rating: 44.0
Nathan Eovaldi : FD: $7,400 — DK: $7,300
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 328.2 — SIERA: 3.97 — ERA: 4.33 — K%: 16.5% — BB%: 5.7% — HR/9: 0.7

Minnesota Twins Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.301 (Rank: 24) — Strikeout Rate: 20.7% (Rank: 21)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.299 (Rank: 21) — Strikeout Rate: 20.7% (Rank: 16)
Pitchers per PA: 3.79 (Rank: 17)
Analysis: Eovaldi always seems to be in relatively good form, but he has a very low strikeout rate for a starter. Over the last two seasons, he has only struck out 16.5% of the batters that he has faced, which is well below the league average. He does draw a nice matchup against the Twins though, who are ranked 24th in team wOBA and 21st in strikeout rate. Tyson Ross is the obvious play in the early slate, but Eovaldi could serve as a cheap SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.
Pitcher Rating: 66.3

Minnesota
The Twins draw a decent matchup against Nathan Eovaldi, but his splits don’t exactly work in their favor. He gives up a much higher wOBA to left-handed hitters than he does to right-handed hitters. Joe Mauer is really the only lefty in this lineup that stands out though. Miguel Sano is also worth a look, as he has crushed right-handed pitching all season.

NY Yankees
The Yankees’ offense is in a great spot today against Ervin Santana. Not only do they get to face him at home, but he has given up a .337 wOBA to left-handed hitters, which bodes well for this lineup. All of the left-handed bats in this lineup are in play, including whichever one starts at first base (Mark Teixeira or Greg Bird).

Analysis: Montgomery has not pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 7.81 ERA (4.51 SIERA) with a walk rate of 13.8%. He is an easy pitcher to avoid today against the Rangers, who are a very good offense at home. Texas is also ranked ninth in team wOBA over the last 14 days of play. There is more risk than potential reward with Montgomery in the hitter-friendly Globe Life Park.

Until he can string together a few quality outings where he doesn’t get hurt, he can be avoided in daily fantasy. He draws a fairly tough matchup against the Mariners, who have the fifth-highest team wOBA over the last 14 days of play.

The Mariners draw a favorable matchup against Derek Holland, who may be a bit rusty in his first start back from injury. The Rangers are small favorites today in a game that features a total of 9.5 runs. Both offenses are expected to have some success in this day game, which should lead to plenty of fantasy production. Analysis: Koehler is an easy pitcher to avoid in daily fantasy. He has a mediocre SIERA (4.28) with a low strikeout rate of 18.1% over the last two seasons. He draws a decent matchup on paper, but the Brewers are a capable offense and he has to face them in the hitter-friendly Miller Park. So far, we have five out of five pitchers that we can avoid here in the early slate of games.

Pitchers per PA: 3.72 (Rank: 27)
Analysis: Peralta has not been in the best of form recently, but he does have a 3.92 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 17.0% over the last two seasons. He draws a favorable matchup today against the Marlins, who are ranked 30th in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. The big concern here is that he struggles with left-handed hitters and the Marlins have a few good ones in their lineup (Dee Gordon, Justin Bour, and Derek Dietrich). Peralta could be a cheap source for a win, but at best, he is an SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.

As mentioned above, Wily Peralta has not fared well against left-handed hitters in his career. Since the start of the 2014 season, Peralta has given up a .357 wOBA to left-handed hitters. Analysis: Wood has been a serviceable starter this season, but his strikeouts have taken a small hit. He draws a bad strikeout matchup today against the A’s, who have the third-lowest strikeout rate against left-handed pitching this season. If Clayton Kershaw can only strikeout seven A’s, I doubt Wood is going to have a ton of success in the way of strikeouts. The Dodgers are ranked second in team wOBA against right-handed pitching and fourth in team wOBA over the last 14 days of play. He can safely be avoided in all league formats today.

San Diego Padres Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.295 (Rank: 28) — Strikeout Rate: 21.8% (Rank: 26)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.300 (Rank: 20) — Strikeout Rate: 20.0% (Rank: 11)
Pitchers per PA: 3.83 (Rank: 13)
Analysis: Teheran has been sharp recently, but unfortunately, he is not pitching at home today. His career home/road splits are glaring and at this point, he is an automatic fade when he is pitching on the road. The matchup and ballpark are both in his favor, but he is a sizable underdog on the road. I will be avoiding Teheran in the early slate of games.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.315 (Rank: 13) — Strikeout Rate: 16.7% (Rank: 3)
Pitchers per PA: 3.77 (Rank: 21)
Analysis: Ross has pitched very well recently, posting a 2.92 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 25.3% over the last month of play. He draws a favorable matchup against the Braves, who are ranked 24th in team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. Ross is a high-strikeout pitcher that gets to play at home in the pitcher-friendly confines of Petco Park. Don’t overthink this one, use Ross in your cash games in the early slate.

Atlanta
The Braves have one of the lowest team totals on the board today and they are one of the worst hitting teams in baseball against right-handed pitching. They can safely be avoided against Tyson Ross.

San Diego
Even though I won’t be targeting Julio Teheran, I don’t love any of the Padres’ hitters either. Teheran gives up a much higher wOBA to left-handed hitters and none of the lefties in this lineup stand out as elite or even secondary plays.
