Channing Frye (out)
Iman Shumpert (out) update

Hello, and welcome to the Sunday edition of the Grind Down. We have one early game, one afternoon game, and six games that lock 6 PM ET. DraftKings is not offering an all-day slate, while FanDuel is. It all kicks off in Philadelphia as the Sixers host the Cavs once again. They met earlier this month, and the Sixers were able stay competitive and only lost by one point. LeBron James dominated that game with 25 points, 14 assists, eight rebounds and two steals. We can expect James to dominate once again and expect him to play about 30-34 minutes. SF is really ugly over on FanDuel, and it’s better off just grabbing the sure thing with James and moving on. Rudy Gay is not a bad option as an SF1 but for cash games in the all-day, expect James to be heavily owned.

Kyrie Irving struggled against Philly in their last meeting, shooting 3-for-17. Don’t expect that to happen again this morning/afternoon. If you’re not paying up for Lillard or Paul for this slate, Irving is a strong option in the next tier of PGs. Eric Bledsoe might have high a slightly higher ceiling than Irving against Denver, but on FanDuel, Irving is slightly cheaper than Bledsoe. On DraftKings, Irving is the more expensive guard in the two-game slate. Expect Bledsoe to garner more ownership and likely be the safer route with Vegas setting the implied spread at 12 for Cavs and Sixers game. Still, as I’ve mentioned before, players have to play well to cause a blowout, and Irving is still a strong tournament option. Kevin Love has been a model of consistency and should be safe enough for cash games.

With Channing Frye away from the team, expect Love to likely play the most minutes out of their “Big 3.” As we saw in the blowout of the Mavs on Friday, the Cavs really used their bench, playing six guys over 10 minutes. Jordan McRae is most likely to be the scorer against his former team if the game turns into a blowout in the fourth quarter. Everyone else is a risky option without much upside. Still, they can hit their floor since the bench is all minimum salaried players over on FanDuel.

Philadelphia 76ers

Editor’s Note: Jerryd Bayless has been ruled OUT for Sunday.

Nerlens Noel (out)
Jerryd Bayless (out) update 12:33 PM ET

The Sixers are expecting to play Joel Embiid tonight and rest him tomorrow against the Raptors. Embiid has been able dominate in most matchups with Philadelphia force-feeding him the ball. Embiid scored 36.20 FanDuel fantasy points against them last time but was also $1.2k cheaper. He’s not a cash game lock on FanDuel with so many good center options on the all-day slate, but he is likely the best option on the two-game slate. With Love being able to play C on DraftKings, Embiid is simply a tournament option with his salary sitting at $6.4k. Jerryd Bayless is working his way back from a wrist injury and took over the starting role from Sergio Rodriguez in the Sixers previous game. He did not bust out like he did in the previous game, but feel free to go back to the well here on FanDuel. He’s only $200 over the minimum and should see 26-30 minutes. His salary has spiked on DraftKings, but on a two-game slate, you’ll need some salary savers. Still, he should only be used as a second guard for cash games and not your primary option with Bledsoe in such a nice spot. For tournaments, we can expect some ownership to be off him for the all day slate, but on a two-game slate he could also go overlooked with most users gravitating towards Jamal Murray in the same price range.

Jahlil Okafor is a also a viable tournament option who has played over 24 minutes in consecutive games, and one was a start and one was off the bench with Embiid playing. Don’t over 30 fantasy points, but he has a chance to exceed value. Ersan Ilyasova was not with the team the last time they played and he’s been on a major roll over his last three games, averaging 32.2 DK fantasy points. We can expect him to play 28-30 minutes tonight, making for a solid value option on the two-game slate. Dario Saric has been in a slump, and we’ll need to see him snap out of before we can recommend using him. Nik Stauskas is now more expensive over on FanDuel than he is on DraftKings, and he is a better play on DK because of the three-pointers. His role seems secure off the bench and won’t greatly exceed value but is a solid cash game with a projectable floor. Gerald Henderson was starting to play well before his illness and we’ll need to see him also pick it back up before feeling comfortable using him.

Update: Jerryd Bayless has been ruled out, Sergio Rodriguez will start in his place. Rodriguez is an elite play on DraftKings and a PG2 option with 5-8x upside on FanDuel.

Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets are traveling to Phoenix after a thrilling overtime loss to the Thunder. Danilo Gallinari and Will Barton did not play in that contest, so Wilson Chandler (55.3 DKFP) and Jamal Murray (34.8 DKFP) really stepped up. Jameer Nelson also had his best game of the season, playing 41 minutes and scoring 21 points and handing out 13 assists. If Gallinari and Barton are ruled out again, expect all three players to get chased heavily against the Suns. Wilson Chandler is the most expensive of the bunch and also has the highest ceiling. Emmanuel Mudiay returned 5x on DK against the Thunder and should be heavily considered against the Phoenix since he leads the Nuggets with a true usage rate of 27.1% and is averaging 31.2 MPG on the season. Mudiay has yet to be consistent and is better off as a tournament option.

Kenneth Faried has struggled to exceed value since his salary has spiked but should be on the radar against the Suns. Faried’s minutes continue to fluctuate, so he is also better off as a tournament option. Nikola Jokic and Jusuf Nurkic continue to get used randomly and are way too risky for cash games, but Jokic stands out as a viable tournament option if Tyson Chandler starts for the Suns. Chandler did not start in the Suns previous game, so it’ll be interesting to see how the rotation goes. Darrell Arthur has yet to make an impact since returning from injury but did play 20 minutes against the Thunder. He’s a minimum-priced option across the industry but is simply a boom-or-bust low dollar GPP option.

Phoenix Suns

Eric Bledsoe is playing his best basketball of the season and should be considered a strong option in all formats against the Nuggets. He’s actually played better now that Knight is in the lineup with him, making Knight a tournament option at best. Bledsoe has seen a usage rate increase of 6.4% over the last week and leads the team with a 27.5% true usage rate on the season. Devin Booker has moved over to SF with Knight in the starting unit and is back to his struggling ways. Knight has only had one huge game so far this season and is a better option off the bench. Booker has only exceeded value once in his last five games, making him too risky for cash games. Still, on a two-game slate with one projected to be a blowout, we’ll need some potential high upside guys and Booker has proven he can get 50 fantasy points.

Alex Len continues to be solid but is now in a weird time-share with Tyson Chandler back in the mix. Both players are viable C options for the two-game slate with whoever the starter is likely playing more minutes and having the higher upside. Jared Dudley has really cooled off and has not seen over 30 minutes in almost 10 days. P.J. Tucker has also seen his minutes go down over the last week and is too risky as a cash game punt. Dudley has the higher upside due to scoring but if Wilson Chandler really starts to get going for the Nuggets, Tucker can see extended run as their best defensive wing.

Sacramento Kings

Finally, we’ve arrived at the main course after some appetizers. I hope those first two games provided some fantasy goodness, but if we’re lacking any, this game is expected to make up for it. The Kings have the third-highest implied team total on the slate, and basically everyone is in a good matchup. DeMarcus Cousins is back at it, scoring 50+ fantasy points in back-to-back games and should be used in all formats against the Nets. Considering that Vegas expects this game to remain close, expect Cousins to play 34-38 minutes. He’s the second most expensive big man on the slate and has just as high of a ceiling as Anthony Davis tonight. Not much else we need to say about a guy that leads the team with a 35.4% usage rate that has flashed 70+ point upside.

Rudy Gay is back to his struggling ways but should turn it around against the Nets. Expect Gay to go overlooked today with LeBron James right above him in the all-day slate and Wilson Chandler right under him. He makes a ton of sense on the six-game slate, but it will depend on your roster construction since there are so many studs available. His salary makes it tough to fit in on a stars and scrubs approach. Balanced will definitely be contrarian on it’s own today, so just make the best plays possible if you’re going in that direction.

Darren Collison has been starting the last three games for the Kings and this could be the spot from him to greatly exceed. He’s shown he can get 30 fps and we should look for Collison to play nearly 30 minutes against the Nets. Ty Lawson seems to be struggling on the court with the Kings but has been a solid fantasy contributor. Don’t expect Collison and Lawson to start again due to their defensive deficiencies. Aaron Afflalo will likely jump back into the starting lineup tonight but he remains a boom-or-bust option that can possibly boom tonight. His best game this season was 23.3 DKFP in 41 minutes, so keep those expectations in check if Afflalo is named the starter today. Matt Barnes is getting the minutes but is not really producing right now. He’s also in a great spot and is not a terrible option at his punt level salary. He’s not a primary scorer but has 30 fps upside in this game.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets get a pace down game tonight, which should be good for Brook Lopez. Still, Lopez has yet to play over 31 minutes this season and has a bunch of bad games followed by a 50 burger. With so many solid options on the slate, Lopez is better off avoided. Sean Kilpatrick started at SF since Rondae Hollis-Jefferson missed their last game due to an ankle injury. RHJ is considered questionable for tonight’s game and Kilpatrick will once again be a solid punt option if Hollis-Jefferson is out. Jeremy Lin continues to be out and Isaiah Whitehead has started the last three games. He played a season-high 29 minutes on Friday and is $200 over the minimum on DraftKings and $400 over the minimum on FanDuel. He’s a viable option but not mandatory by any means. Trevor Booker continues to prove that the Nets were getting a productive player when they signed him in the offseason. Booker has had a couple of duds this month but is averaging 28.9 DKFP in eleven contests. He put up 46 FPs in a season-high 33 minutes against the Celtics last week. Since the Kings are 19th in rebounding differential, we can expect Booker to have a shot at a double-double tonight.

Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks travel to Orlando to take on a Magic team that they just beat last week. In a low-scoring affair, Giannis Antetokounmpo was able to put up a season-high 67 DK fantasy points, dishing out his first triple-double of the season. Antetokounmpo will once again be a solid option against the Magic since he leads the team with a 30% true rate, but could have a tough time greatly exceeding value. At his slightly inflated salary point today, anything less than a 50 burger will be a disappointment. While it’s definitely in reach, but his upside is limited, having shown that he is a better player at home so far this season than on the road. Since he’ll need a triple-double to greatly exceed value, his teammates will also have to hit shots.

Jason Kidd is so random with his rotation and benchs guys over the most random things and Jabari Parker was his latest victim. He’s simply too erratic to trust for cash games, making Jabari Parker a GPP option only. Parker was playing well before Friday, but with so many solid forward options tonight, he’s only a secondary option. “The surprising thing is that Matthew Dellavedova and Tony Snell have been getting consistent minutes and are viable punt options if you’re digging in this price range. The carousel continues to spin at center and we have no idea who will actually start. In a pace-down game and having one of the lowest implied team totals, it might be best to limit your exposure to the Bucks.

Update: I have added Giannis Antetokounmpo as an elite play instead of secondary after further consideration.

Orlando Magic

Update: 4:30 ET
Jeff Green (questionable)
C.J. Watson (questionable)

The Orlando Magic host the Bucks and the Vuce might be back. Nikola Vucevic has greatly exceeded value in his last two games and saw a season-high 35 minutes on Friday. Hopefully, this holds because Vucevic is still fairly priced for this contest. Vucevic only scored 25.3 DKFP/23.2 FDFP against the Bucks last week, but only saw 28 minutes. He’s simply been too inconsistent this season but seems to be turning it around, making him a strong tournament option. He definitely has the most upside of all the guys priced in his range but also checks in with a team that has one of the lowest implied totals. Vucevic is tied with Evan Fournier with a 24.3% true usage rate. Fournier has yet to put it together consistently this season and remains a low-end tournament target. Serge Ibaka has scored 40+ FPs in two out of his last three games but is also the most expensive he’s been all season on DraftKings and just $100 under it on FanDuel. There is not much upside here and he does not seem mandatory tonight.

Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers really disappointed in their loss to the Pistons on Friday, and I expect the ownership of their studs to be low with a spread of over 10 points. Blake Griffin has been consistent this season, averaging 42.8 DKFP on the season. He’ll look to get back on track against the Pacers and should continue playing 36 minutes. BG has only had over 50 fantasy points in one of the Clippers many blowouts this season. This should also keep his ownership down and from a game theory perspective, you can do a lot worse than using Blake Griffin when his ownership is low. Still, he is not mandatory tonight and better served as a tournament option. Chris Paul is slightly over-priced but has one of the best matchups on the slate. He’s also lacked consistency this season and is also only a GPP option.

J.J. Redick has been consistent, averaging 27.13 DKFP / 24.45 FDFP over his last nine games. He’s only a cash game viable play that lacks much upside. Since the Pacers rank 28th in rebounding differential, we have to take a look at DeAndre Jordan. He’s only returned 6x or more twice this season and since the minutes have fluctuated, he’s too risky for cash games as well. Since the Clippers have the 5th highest implied team total they deserve consideration if you’re making multiple tournament teams.

Indiana Pacers

The Clippers are one of the best defensive teams in the league and the Pacers are projected to score five points less than their season average. With Paul George, C.J. Miles, and Kevin Seraphin out, the other Pacers have tried to step up. Jeff Teague, Myles Turner, Rodney Stuckey, Aaron Brooks, and Al Jefferson all had solid games against the Nets on Friday, while Thad Young and Monta Ellis struggled. With so many better options on the slate, it looks like the Pacers are in a prime avoid spot. Rodney Stuckey might be the best option on DK since he is under $4k and multi-position eligibile. Someone has to score but it just seems like the ceilings are capped for everyone here.
