Which useful trend or statistic stuck out most during your research?
CheeseIsGood: The lowest ERA and SIERA would seem like it should be a battle between Corey Kluber and James Paxton. But Ross Stripling has them fighting for 2nd place with his 1.65 ERA and 2.69 SIERA. His skills for the season are ace-worthy at 30.1% K and 4.6% BB, and they’ve gotten more obscene recently with a 35% K rate and just 1.7% walks over the past month. That’s a 43:2 K:BB ratio over his last five starts.
MrTuttle: Despite a game with 10 strikeouts and another with 8, Reynaldo Lopez has the lowest strikeout rate (16.7%) of Friday’s probable starters.
TheSeige: Jonathan Loaisiga will be a popular cheap play today but be careful, he hasn’t thrown more than 5 innings all year in the minors and hasn’t thrown over 77 pitches since early May.
boggslite: Dating back to last season, the current projected COL lineup owns a league best .372 wOBA against LHP.
What is your hot take of the day?
CheeseIsGood: Seth Lugo is the 3rd highest scoring pitcher on the slate
MrTuttle: Reynaldo Lopez + Brandon McCarthy each score 20+ DK pts.
TheSeige: Cubs outscore COL and TEX today
boggslite: COL/TEX combine for 15+ runs
Who is your top overall pitcher (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
CheeseIsGood: James Paxton – I would still absolutely play Corey Kluber first if salary were no issue, but this is a huge pricing gap down to Paxton who has every bit as much upside, and really even a tad more than Kluber. The 31.4% K rate for Paxton is tops on the slate and the Red Sox just aren’t an imposing offense against left-handed pitching.
MrTuttle: James Paxton – A matchup against the Red Sox will make you feel uncomfortable but Paxton offers a big enough discount from Kluber to make him the preferred SP1 target. Surprisingly the Red Sox have been #bad against southpaws this year as they own the league’s fifth highest strikeout rate (24.4 K%) and fourth worst wRC+ (85) against lefties.
TheSeige: James Paxton – I’m taking the savings from Kluber to Paxton who draws a Red Sox team whose lineup has struggled against LHP this year. The Red Sox have a .140 ISO and a 22.7% K rate vs LHP this year and outside the top 4 hitters there isn’t anyone that scares you. Combine that with Paxton’s 31.7% K rate to right-handed batters and he’s the top option on the slate.
boggslite: Corey Kluber – He won’t be cheap, but he draws a sneaky good matchup at home against a Twins team that will be without one of their best power threats in Miguel Sano.
Who is your top overall hitter (when considering price, matchup, projected ownership, etc.) on the board and why?
CheeseIsGood: Nolan Arenado – The high total game is in the mid-90’s heat in Texas, and the Rangers are calling up a pitcher in Yohander Mendez who doesn’t look anywhere near ready for the show based on his Triple-A numbers. He has to deal with the outlandish splits of Arenado. Since the start of 2017, Arenado has a .382 ISO and .523 wOBA against lefties with just an 11.2% K rate and a home run once every 11.3 AB.
MrTuttle: Nolan Arenado – Despite the high price tag Arenado is the first guy in my lineups regardless of the site. This is an unfair matchup for Yohander Mendez against Arenado who has unreal splits versus lefties for his career (143 wRC+, .270 ISO).
TheSeige: Nolan Arenado – While the Rockies team isn’t great in general, Nolan is and he gets a matchup against a rookie left-handed call-up (and potentially Moore after that from the pen) and Arenado’s numbers vs LHP have been unreal with a .312 ISO and .495 wOBA this year.
boggslite: Nolan Arenado – Arenado feasts on lefties and surprisingly comes with a cheaper salary than we are used to seeing.
