Edinson Volquez : FD: $8,300 — DK: $7,300

Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 385.0 — SIERA: 4.30 — ERA: 3.34 — K%: 17.7% — BB%: 8.6% — HR/9: 0.8

Chicago White Sox Offense (2015)

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.298 (Rank: 24) — Strikeout Rate: 22.2% (Rank: 17)
Pitches per PA: 3.80 (Rank: 18)

Analysis: Volquez has been in average form recently, posting a 4.31 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 19.0% over the last month of play. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the White Sox, but his limited upside has me looking elsewhere at pitcher. There are better plays for both cash games (higher floor) and tournaments (higher ceiling).

Pitcher Rating: 65.4

Jose Quintana : FD: $8,300 — DK: $8,400

Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 397.2 — SIERA: 3.57 — ERA: 3.35 — K%: 21.0% — BB%: 5.7% — HR/9: 0.5

Kansas City Royals Offense (2015)
vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.316 (Rank: 15) — Strikeout Rate: 15.1% (Rank: 1)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.325 (Rank: 12) — Strikeout Rate: 23.2% (Rank: 26)
Pitches per PA: 3.71 (Rank: 30)

Analysis: Quintana has pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 3.68 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22.0%. He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Royals, though. On the season, Kansas City has the lowest strikeout rate of any team against left-handed pitching. With the Royals still fighting for home field advantage, Quintana is a very risky play tonight.

Pitcher Rating: 73.9

Batter Grind Down

Kansas City

As mentioned above, the Royals are still fighting for seeding in the American League playoff picture. They draw a difficult matchup tonight against Jose Quintana, but how many times have we seen this offense play well against above-average pitchers? I won’t be using any Royals in cash games, but Lorenzo Cain is in play for tournaments.

Chicago White Sox

The White Sox draw a mediocre matchup tonight against Edinson Volquez. While he may not strike a ton of hitters out, he has held both left and right-handed bats under a .315 wOBA over the last two seasons. The White Sox should be considered secondary options at best tonight.

Analysis: Bettis has been in surprisingly good form recently, but it’s going to take a lot more than that before I will consider targeting him in DFS. He has a below-average strikeout rate and his opponent has the fourth-highest team total on the board tonight. There is more risk than potential reward here, especially given the fact that this game will be played in the hitter-friendly Chase Field.

He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Rockies, who have the second-highest team wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. This is expected to be a high scoring affair and I will be avoiding both pitchers here.

Analysis: The Astros have been one of the best stories in baseball this season, but a lackluster final month of the season now has them on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. They are now a half game behind the Angels for the final Wildcard spot, so every game here on out will be treated as a must-win. While I like the Astros in this game, I will be avoiding Kazmir. We saw what happened after the Royals locked up their division, as they rolled out a Triple-A caliber lineup in the following night. If the Dodgers do the same, Leake deserves consideration. If they roll out their usual lineup, Leake should be avoided.
