Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.271 (Rank: 27) — Strikeout Rate: 23.1% (Rank: 27)
Pitchers per PA: 3.71 (Rank: 28)
Analysis: Lorenzen is an easy pitcher to avoid in daily fantasy baseball. He has an above-average SIERA and walk rate with a below-average strikeout rate. That’s not a good combination for a pitcher. He draws a favorable matchup against the Marlins, but I’ll give the edge to Miami in this matchup. Lorenzen’s biggest struggle this season has been left-handed hitters and the Marlins have a few talented lefties in their lineup.
Pitcher Rating:41.0
Jose Fernandez : FD: $9,900 — DK: $9,800
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 57.2 — SIERA: 2.21 — K%: 33.0% — BB%: 5.7% — FB Rate: 32.1% — HR/FB: 11.1%

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.306 (Rank: 13) — Strikeout Rate: 15.8% (Rank: 2)
Pitchers per PA: 3.73 (Rank: 24)
Analysis: Fernandez was a little shaky at the start of his first outing back, but he quickly turned it around. He finished with six strikeouts, as well as a home run in the Marlins win over the Giants. When healthy, Fernandez is one of the best pitchers in baseball and he’s not going to be priced under $10,000 for much longer. Take advantage of the cheap price tag while you still can, even in a somewhat difficult matchup against the Reds.
Pitcher Rating:92.5

Cincinnati
The Reds draw a difficult matchup against Jose Fernandez, who has held left and right-handed hitters under a .275 wOBA in his career. Rust could still be an issue for Fernandez, but the Reds shouldn’t be targeted outside of tournament play. There are better matchups on the board tonight.

The Marlins draw a favorable matchup against Michael Lorenzen, who has given up a .413 wOBA to left-handed hitters over the last two seasons. Dee Gordon, Christian Yelich, and Justin Bour are all in play tonight and I don’t mind using them together in both cash games and tournaments.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.302 (Rank: 17) — Strikeout Rate: 22.2% (Rank: 23)
Pitchers per PA: 3.93 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: Oberholtzer is a low-strikeout pitcher with an average SIERA. He has struggled with his command a bit this season, walking nearly 10% of the batters that he has faced. He draws a bad matchup tonight against the Indians, who are ranked seventh in wOBA (.318) and third in strikeout rate (17.5%) against left-handed pitching this season. The Indians also average the third-most pitches per plate appearance.
Pitcher Rating:42.3
Cody Anderson : FD: $6,400 — DK: $6,300
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 23.2 — SIERA: 3.97 — K%: 11.9% — BB%: 1.2% — FB Rate: 30.6% — HR/FB: 4.5%

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.315 (Rank: 11) — Strikeout Rate: 25.7% (Rank: 29)
Pitchers per PA: 3.85 (Rank: 10)
Analysis: Anderson has pitched well in his first stint in the majors, posting a 3.97 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 11.9% in his first three starts. He has never been a high-strikeout pitcher in the minor leagues though, which will limit his fantasy appeal moving forward. He is a boom or bust option tonight against the Astros, who have a ton of pop in their lineup, but also strike out at the highest rate of any team against right-handed pitching. Restrict your exposure of Anderson to tournaments tonight.
Pitcher Rating:58.2

Houston
The Astros are an interesting offense to target tonight, especially in tournaments. Not only do they lead the majors in home runs, but they are facing a rookie pitcher that is only making his fourth career start. I’ll likely avoid the Astros’ hitters in cash games, but they deserve consideration in GPPs.

The Indians draw a favorable matchup against Brett Oberholtzer, who has given up a .329+ wOBA to left and right-handed hitters over the last two seasons. The right-handed bats obviously have the splits in their favor against the southpaw, but Michael Brantley is also a strong play, as he hits left-handed pitching well.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.319 (Rank: 8) — Strikeout Rate: 19.2% (Rank: 13)
Pitchers per PA: 3.78 (Rank: 18)
Analysis: Price has faced the Twins two times this season, having drastically different results. In their first meeting, he was one out away from a complete-game shutout. In their next meeting, the Twins scored three runs and got him out of the game in the sixth inning. Price is a high-strikeout pitcher that throws a ton of strikes. That helps keep his pitch count low and his strikeout total high, but there isn’t a ton of guesswork on the part of the opposing offense. Price may have a little more upside, but Zack Greinke is a much safer pitching option tonight.

Analysis: Pelfrey is one of the worst starting pitchers in all of baseball. Since the start of last season, he has a 5.03 SIERA with a strikeout rate (10.7%) that is nearly as low as his walk rate (9.7%). While that’s a huge red flag, it’s great news for Pelfrey’s opponents. The Tigers are the hottest offense in baseball right now and they should have a field day tonight against Pelfrey.

Analysis: Richards is still searching for his 2014 form. He is slowly improving, as he had a 3.47 SIERA and a strikeout rate of 18.6% over the last month of play. He draws a favorable matchup tonight against the Mariners, who are ranked 26th in wOBA (.292) and 27th in strikeout rate (22.3%) against right-handed pitching this season. This is a matchup that should suit him well, as he has left-handed hitters to a .246 wOBA over the last two seasons.

Pitchers per PA: 3.77 (Rank: 20)
Analysis: Hernandez hasn’t been as sharp over the last month of play, but he is still one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. He has a high strikeout rate and a decent matchup against the Angels, who are ranked 18th in wOBA (.310) and strikeout rate (19.3%) against right-handed pitching this season. The Angels’ offense has been red-hot recently, but some of that is inflated by their series in Coors Field.

LA Angels
Since the start of the 2014 seasons, Felix Hernandez has held left and right-handed hitters under a .260 wOBA. The Angels should be avoided in cash games, but Mike Trout deserves a look in tournaments.

Analysis: Clayton Kershaw was the chalk play in cash games last night and Zack Greinke is the chalk play in cash games tonight. He has pitched well recently with a 3.07 SIERA and a strikeout rate of 22.9% over the last month. He also draws a terrific matchup against the Phillies, who are ranked 29th in wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. Don’t try to outsmart everyone by fading Greinke in cash games.
