Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.308 (Rank: 17) — Strikeout Rate: 20.2% (Rank: 15)
Pitchers per PA: 3.86 (Rank: 8)
Analysis: Thomas will draw the start for the Dodgers tonight, as Zack Greinke is not with the team to attend the birth of his child. Thomas is not expected to pitch deep into this game, as the Dodgers are expected to treat this as a bullpen start. Whenever this happens, you should automatically avoid the starter. Even if he pitches well, he may not even be eligible for the win. The matchup against the Mets is enticing, but there is little upside here.
Pitcher Rating:30.5
Jon Niese : FD: $7,700 — DK: $7,300

Pitchers per PA: 3.88 (Rank: 5)
Analysis: Niese may have a 1.53 ERA over the last month of play, but his indicators suggest a different story. He has a 4.52 SIERA over the stretch with a low strikeout rate of 12.8%. He is pitching at home where he has had great success throughout his career, but he draws a difficult matchup against the Dodgers. There are better pitching options at this price point tonight.

LA Dodgers
The Dodgers are an above-average offense against left-handed pitching. While Citi Field is not a hitter-friendly ballpark, that doesn’t mean that we have to avoid the Dodgers completely. Justin Turner, Howie Kendrick, and Scott Van Slyke are in play against Jon Niese, who has given up a .329 wOBA to right-handed hitters over the last two seasons.

NY Mets
The Mets face Ian Thomas tonight, but they will also see quite a few different arms out of the Dodgers’ bullpen. It’s hard to narrow down our fantasy options when the opposing pitcher is expected to change every few innings. The Mets can be avoided altogether, but if you want to take a hitter here, Ruben Tejada is the preferred target. He is cheap and he has a .370 wOBA over the last 14 days of play.

Analysis: Kazmir was traded to the Astros right before his start yesterday. Houston will waste no time getting him acclimated, as they will throw him into the fire tonight against the Royals. Kazmir may press a bit, trying to pitch well in his first start and with a matchup against Kansas City, he is an easy avoid tonight. The Royals have the fewest strikeouts of any team in baseball this season.

Analysis: Guthrie is one of my least favorite pitchers to use in daily fantasy baseball. He has a below-average SIERA with a very low strikeout rate. That’s just not what I’m looking for in a starting pitcher. The Astros may strikeout at a high rate, but they are a very competent offense with some talented left-handed hitters in their lineup. I have had zero exposure to Guthrie this season and that trend will continue tonight against Houston.

Houston
Even though this game will be played in the pitcher-friendly Kaufmann Stadium, the Astros can still be targeted tonight. They draw a favorable matchup against Jeremy Guthrie, who has given up a .376 wOBA to left-handed hitters over the last two seasons. The Royals should never be counted out in DFS, because they put the ball in play and manufacture a lot of runs. They may not have the best matchup on the board tonight, but as I mentioned above, Scott Kazmir may try to do a little too much in his first start with the Astros. The Royals are sneaky plays tonight.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.295 (Rank: 21) — Strikeout Rate: 24.2% (Rank: 26)
Pitchers per PA: 3.80 (Rank: 14)
Analysis: Pineda continues to pitch well for the Yankees. In the last two seasons, he has a 3.04 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22.8%. He has a good chance to keep it going tonight against the Twins, who are ranked 20th in wOBA and 22nd in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. Pineda typically flies under the radar in these types of matchups, so I expect him to have a very low ownership level. For that reason, I have him pegged as one of my favorite tournaments plays.

Analysis: Hughes will have a good start every now and then, but he has shown zero consistency this season. He has a 4.57 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 12.7% over the last month of play, so his form is certainly an issue. He also draws one of the worst matchups on the board, as the Yankees are ranked fifth in wOBA and eighth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. There is very little to like about Hughes tonight.

The Yankees draw a terrific matchup against Phil Hughes, who has not been the same pitcher that he was in 2014. Hughes would love to throw a gem against his former team, but I don’t see that happening tonight. Analysis: Cooney is a decent value play tonight, but he’s not a pitcher that I’m going to have a ton of exposure to. He has pitched well this season with a 3.96 SIERA and a strikeout rate of 23.3%, but he struggles with his command and he is still largely unproven at the major league level. The matchup against the Braves is a favorable one though, so he could make a decent tournament play or SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.

The Braves’ offense is ranked 26th in wOBA and 24th in strikeout rate over the last 14 days of play.
