MLB Grind Down: Wednesday, June 10th

The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.

The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Remember, these writeups are done prior to lineups being released, so make sure to check our Starting Lineups page to ensure the recommended options are playing.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.337 (Rank: 4) — Strikeout Rate: 15.7% (Rank: 2)
Pitchers per PA: 3.69 (Rank: 28)

Analysis: Williams has struggled in his last five starts, posting a 4.67 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 12.7%. He has an unsustainably high HR/FB rate this season, but even with some positive regression, he’s not going to be a recommended fantasy option anytime soon. The Reds’ offense has been red-hot over the last two weeks, ranking 4th in wOBA (.337) and 2nd in strikeout rate (15.7%). Williams should not be on your radar today, even in the early slate of games.

Pitcher Rating:36.8

Jon Moscot (FD: $5200, DK: $4500)

Pitching Stats:

Philadelphia Phillies Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.273 (Rank: 30) — Strikeout Rate: 19.7% (Rank: 13)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.274 (Rank: 29) — Strikeout Rate: 21.8% (Rank: 22)
Pitchers per PA: 3.70 (Rank: 26)

Analysis: Moscot was knocked around a bit in his first career major league start, giving up four earned runs in five innings of work against the Padres. He has never been a high strikeout pitcher in the minors and that’s not likely going to change in the majors. He does draw a favorable matchup against the Phillies though. On the season, they are ranked dead last in wOBA (.273) against right-handed pitching. Moscot’s upside is limited, but he’s the preferred fantasy option of the two starters in this game.

Analysis: Votto hit not one, not two, but three home runs last night against Aaron Harang and the Phillies. He has been the main reason why the Reds’ offense has had so much success over the last two weeks, posting a .464 wOBA and a .333 ISO during that stretch. He draws another favorable matchup today against Jerome Williams, who has given up a .340+ wOBA to batters from both sides of the plate. Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.372 (Rank: 1) — Strikeout Rate: 16.1% (Rank: 3)
Pitchers per PA: 3.80 (Rank: 14)

Analysis: Koehler takes the mound for the Marlins tonight in what will be a very difficult matchup. Koehler has been a serviceable starter over the last two seasons, posting a 4.29 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 18.4%. He is fairly efficient against batters from both sides of the plate, holding them under a .320 wOBA during that two-year span. The big issue here is Koehler’s matchup against Toronto. The Blue Jays are ranked 3rd in wOBA (.329) against right-handed pitching and 1st in wOBA (.372) over the last 14 days of play. Koehler also has to face this team in the Rogers Centre, which is one of the best hitting parks in all of baseball.

Scott Copeland (FD: $3000, DK: N/A)

Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 3.0 — SIERA: 7.12 — K%: 0.0% — BB%: 16.7% — FB Rate: 22.2% — HR/FB: 0.0%

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.312 (Rank: 14) — Strikeout Rate: 21.6% (Rank: 20)
Pitchers per PA: 3.71 (Rank: 25)

Analysis: Copeland will be making a spot start for the Blue Jays today, as Aaron Sanchez is dealing with “overall soreness.” While I’m not knocking him for missing a start, my guess is that his “overall soreness” is nowhere near the level of Matthew Dellavedova right now. Copeland will be making his first career major league start. He has pitched well in the minors this season with a 3.04 FIP and a K/9 of 5.5. Even though he’s a sizable favorite here, I like the Marlins’ offense more than Copeland in this one.

Analysis: Bour hasn’t exactly been tearing the cover off the ball recently, but it’s hard to pass on him today against a rookie pitcher. Bour is priced at $2,900 on both FanDuel and DraftKings, which is way too cheap for a player with a .376 wOBA and a .163 ISO against right-handed pitching. The Marlins should be able to put some runs on the board today against the rookie. Don’t be afraid to load up on Miami in both cash games and tournaments.

Analysis: The Blue Jays were happy to have Encarnacion back in the lineup last night, as he ended up giving Toronto a walk off win with his home run in the bottom of the ninth. Encarnacion has not hit for a high average, but he still has great power in his bat. He is priced down on both FanDuel and DraftKings and he draws a favorable matchup against Tom Koehler in one of the best hitter’s parks in baseball.

Pitchers per PA: 3.91 (Rank: 5)

Analysis: The last time Gonzalez faced the Yankees, he had nine straight ground-ball outs to start the game. He then fell apart in the fourth inning and was quickly pulled. I remember it well because I had him that night. Gonzalez gets to face the Yankees again today, although this time the game will be played in Yankee Stadium. The Yankees have really played well offensively over the last two weeks, ranking 9th in wOBA (.321) and 9th in strikeout rate (18.8%) during that stretch. Gonzalez is in play on multi-pitcher sites (early slate), but I’m actually leaning toward Nathan Eovaldi in this one.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.287 (Rank: 23) — Strikeout Rate: 21.4% (Rank: 18)
Pitchers per PA: 3.76 (Rank: 19)

Analysis: Eovaldi doesn’t have that high strikeout rate that we like to look for in a pitcher, but given the lack of options in the early slate, we should be willing to cut him some slack. He has pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 3.93 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 16.3%. If he can pitch around Bryce Harper, he could have a very nice outing at home against a struggling Nationals’ offense. Over the last two weeks, the Nationals are ranked 23rd in wOBA (.287) and they are a team that strikes out at a higher rate than the major league average.

Analysis: As mentioned above, Koehler could be in for a quality start if he is able to pitch around Bryce Harper. That is a major IF though, as Harper hit yet another home run last night off of Masahiro Tanaka. Harper has a .445 wOBA and a .325 ISO over the last two weeks of play. Analysis: Martinez is having an excellent season for the Cardinals, but like many pitchers before him, he’ll likely leave Coors Field with a much higher ERA than before his trip to Denver. Coors Field is the best hitter’s park in all of baseball and the Rockies are ranked 2nd in wOBA (.341) against right-handed pitching this season. While I’d like to see him continue to pitch well, the odds are not forever in his favor. Pittsburgh Pirates Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.306 (Rank: 19) — Strikeout Rate: 20.20% (Rank: 18)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.321 (Rank: 9) — Strikeout Rate: 21.20% (Rank: 16)
Pitchers per PA: 3.79 (Rank: 15)

Analysis: Lohse has quietly pitched well over the last month, posting a 3.54 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 21.6%. He is a fly-ball pitcher with an an average HR/FB rate of 10.8% over the last two seasons. Tonight he faces a Pirates’ offense that has been much better in recent weeks, ranking 9th in wOBA (.321). He’ll have a very low level of ownership tonight, making him an easy fade in cash games and tournaments.

Pitcher Rating:49.7

Charlie Morton (FD: $6800, DK: $6300)

Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 176.1 — SIERA: 3.7 — K%: 17.80% — BB%: 8.20% — FB Rate: 20.70% — HR/FB: 9.40%
Last 30 Days: IP: 19 — SIERA: 2.77 — K%: 7.90% — BB%: 5.30% — FB Rate: 6.10% — HR/FB: 25.00%

Milwaukee Brewers Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.295 (Rank: 24) — Strikeout Rate: 21.80% (Rank: 25)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.29 (Rank: 19) — Strikeout Rate: 19.10% (Rank: 10)
Pitchers per PA: 3.75 (Rank: 20)

Analysis: Morton is an interesting play tonight. His price isn’t going to stay under $7,000 for much longer, especially if he continues to pitch the way that he has since coming back from injury. He has a 2.77 SIERA this season. While the strikeouts haven’t been there, it’s only a matter of time before his strikeout rate gets up closer to his career average. He draws a favorable matchup at home against the Brewres, who are ranked 24th in wOBA (.295) and 25th in strikeout rate (21.8%) against right-handed pitching this season.
