MLB Grind Down: Thursday, August 20th
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down article will give you an in-depth analysis into the MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a major factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.279 (Rank: 30) — Strikeout Rate: 21.4% (Rank: 21)
Pitches per PA: 3.89 (Rank: 4)
Analysis: Tomlin is coming off of a strong start against the Twins, striking out five batters over six and one-third innings of work. While his numbers over the last two seasons are more than respectable, he can safely be avoided tonight in New York. On the season, the Yankees are ranked fifth in team wOBA and eighth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.
Pitcher Rating: 51.4
Ivan Nova : FD: $6,700 — DK: $7,100

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.335 (Rank: 11) — Strikeout Rate: 19.8% (Rank: 8)
Pitches per PA: 3.91 (Rank: 3)
Analysis: Nova has pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 3.89 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 18.2%. While it’s a good sign for Yankee fans, we shouldn’t trust Nova in daily fantasy just yet. He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Indians, who are ranked 15th in team wOBA and sixth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season. There is more risk than potential reward tonight for Nova.
Pitcher Rating: 58.0

Cleveland
The Indians’ offense has been very good in recent weeks, ranking in the top half of the majors in both team wOBA and strikeout rate. They draw a favorable matchup tonight against Ivan Nova, who has given up a .338+ wOBA to both left and right-handed hitters over the last two seasons. The Indians also see a nice ballpark boost playing in Yankee Stadium.

Tyler Duffey : FD: $5,400 — DK: $4,200
Pitching Stats:

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.349 (Rank: 4) — Strikeout Rate: 20.8% (Rank: 18)
Pitches per PA: 3.82 (Rank: 14)
Analysis: Duffey has not had the ideal start to his major league career. In his first two starts, he has a 5.51 SIERA with a walk rate that is nearly as high as his strikeout rate. Tonight he has to go on the road to face the Orioles, who have a very potent offense. On the season, Baltimore is ranked eighth in team wOBA against right-handed pitching. Duffey should be avoided in daily fantasy until further notice.
Pitcher Rating: 41.8
Miguel Gonzalez : FD: $7,100 — DK: $6,400

Pitches per PA: 3.80 (Rank: 15)
Analysis: Gonzalez has been in Gonzalez-like form recently. He always seems to give his team a chance to win, but he doesn’t have enough strikeout potential to really stand out as an elite play in daily fantasy. Since the start of last season, Gonzalez owns a 4.34 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 17.3%. He draws a decent matchup against the Twins, but he is not on my radar tonight. There are better pitching options in both cash games and tournaments.
Pitcher Rating: 59.7

The Twins are not as good of an offense on the road as they are at home, but they draw a nice matchup against Miguel Gonzalez in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards. Since the start of the 2014 season, Gonzalez has given up a .325+ wOBA to both left and right-handed hitters over the last two seasons.

Baltimore
The Orioles have a high team total tonight, as they square off against rookie Tyler Duffey at home. Duffey has not pitched well in his first two major league starts and both left and right-handed hitters are in play here. Tonight is a night where we don’t necessarily have to load up on hitters in Coors Field, as they are a few matchups that are just as enticing.

Pitches per PA: 3.79 (Rank: 19)
Analysis: Peavy has pitched well since coming back from injury, but he’s not a pitcher that usually stands out as a must start in daily fantasy. He has a mediocre SIERA with a below-average strikeout rate. He also draws a difficult matchup against the Pirates, who are ranked second in team wOBA over the last two weeks of play. Peavy is not the worst pitching option on the board, but it won’t hurt to avoid him in both cash games and tournaments.
Pitcher Rating: 52.6

Analysis: Morton has pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 3.67 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 20.6%. He has pitched well at home throughout his career, but I’m not the biggest fan of his matchup tonight against the Giants. On the season, San Francisco is ranked fourth in team wOBA and fifth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. I prefer Morton over Jake Peavy, but both pitchers can easily be avoided in tonight’s 11-game slate.

The Giants hit right-handed pitching well as a team, but they have a low team total tonight. Charlie Morton has pitched well recently, but he has given up a .328 wOBA to left-handed hitters over the last two seasons. Brandon Belt is the only fantasy option on my radar here.

The Pirates are small favorites tonight in a game that features a respectable total of 8.0 runs. Jake Peavy hasn’t been particularly effective against hitters from either side of the plate. Gregory Polanco has been swinging a hot bat and is a borderline elite play tonight. The right-handed bats of Andrew McCutchen, Jung-Ho Kang, and Starling Marte are better secondary options.

Analysis: Perez has been a serviceable starter for the Rangers over the last two seasons, posting a 4.01 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 15.0%. He doesn’t have the type of upside or matchup that we are looking for. Tonight he has to face a potent Tigers’ offense in the hitter-friendly Comerica Park. On the season, Detroit is ranked second in team wOBA against southpaws. Crazy things happen in baseball, but it would surprise me if this game didn’t turn into a shootout.

Detroit
The Tigers are coming off of a huge offensive outburst against the Cubs last night. They should be able to keep things rolling tonight, as they face Martin Perez at home. Perez is a low strikeout pitcher that has given up a .343 wOBA to right-handed hitters over the last two seasons. This is yet another offense that is in a great spot tonight.

Pitches per PA: 3.77 (Rank: 22)
Analysis: Corbin has been in great form recently, posting a 3.14 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 26.1% over the last month of play. He draws a difficult matchup tonight though, as the Reds are ranked eighth in team wOBA and ninth in strikeout rate against left-handed pitching this season. It also doesn’t help that Corbin has yet to throw more than 91 pitches in any single start this season.
Pitcher Rating: 72.5
John Lamb : FD: $4,900 — DK: $5,500
Pitching Stats:

Arizona Diamondbacks Offense (2015)

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.323 (Rank: 13) — Strikeout Rate: 19.8% (Rank: 13)
Pitches per PA: 3.71 (Rank: 28)
Analysis: Lamb may have given up five runs in his first major league start, but he struck out seven batters in a tough matchup against the Dodgers. Lamb was terrific in his 20 minor league starts earlier this season and he is a very sneaky play tonight against the Diamondbacks. There is obviously a lot of risk attached to this pick though, which is why he should only be targeted in tournaments.
Pitcher Rating: 59.3

Arizona
The Diamondbacks draw a decent matchup tonight against John Lamb, who is only making his second career major league start. It’s always difficult to predict how the first few starts for a pitcher are going to go, but the Diamondbacks hit left-handed pitching well as a team. The right-handed bats in this lineup are in play in the hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark.

Cincinnati
The Reds draw a mediocre matchup tonight against Patrick Corbin, who has really pitched well in his last five starts. They do get to face him at home, but there are teams with better matchups tonight. The Reds’ hitters are secondary options at their respective positions.
