The Flyers were outlasted by the visiting Montreal Canadiens last night and won’t have much time to recover as they head to Pittsburgh to their division rival Pittsburgh Penguins. Playing Pittsburgh on the second half of a back-to-back is obviously not an ideal spot for the Islanders and it’s definitely worth a downgrade from a fantasy standpoint here tonight. As expected, John Tavares leads the way thus far with six points in seven games. He scored a pair of goals against the Penguins in their four meetings last season and is easily the top option here. He’ll be flanked by Josh Bailey and Andrew Ladd both on the top forward line and #1 power-play unit and it’s unlikely that Pittsburgh will be overly interested in trying to “slow down” that line as they’re likely perfectly content on fighting fire-power with fire-power. Former first-round pick Ryan Strome has now tallied points in three straight games and has earned a spot alongside Tavares and company on that top power-play unit, making him an intriguing contrarian play this evening. On defense, New York is very pleased to have Nick Leddy back in action and he really helps stabilize things on the back end for the Islanders. He’ll draw back into his usual role as the point man on the #1 power-play unit and is a mortal lock for 20+ minutes of playing time. He posted a goal and two assists in those four meetings with the Penguins last season and figures to be rather sparsely owned.

The Penguins were thrilled to welcome Sidney Crosby into the lineup for the first time this season on Tuesday, and they promptly picked up a statement victory as they edged out the visiting Florida Panthers on Tuesday. They find themselves sitting atop the Metropolitan Division after six games and their hopes are obviously quite high now that they have Mr. Crosby back in the mix going forwards. Crosby’s return is important not only because he’s arguably the most talented offensive player in the NHL, but also because It makes life much easier for Mike Sullivan as he once again has two truly deadly forward lines to throw over the boards. If you’re playing fantasy hockey you likely already know both Crosby and Malkin are special offensive talents and fine plays on a nightly basis; i won’t bore you. Having them both in the lineup also significantly raises the fantasy outlook for guys like Patric Hornqvist, Phil Kessel and Chris Kunitz as teams can no longer simply key in stopping Evgeni Malkin as they were earlier this season. Kris Letang looks like he’ll remain out of the lineup once again tonight, which means plenty of power-play minutes for both Justin Schultz and Trevor Daley. While that’s certainly a fantasy boost for those two, keep your expectations in check as the Islanders have owned one of the best penalty kills in the NHL over the last 1+ seasons.

The Arizona Coyotes have several very nice players to build around going forward, but after a 1-5-0 start to the season, it’s pretty obvious that they’re still several years away from being competitive in the Western Conference. They’ve dropped all five prior games on their East Coast road trip that wraps up tonight in the City of Brotherly Love, and aside from some GPP fliers, there’s just not a ton to love from the Coyotes this evening despite Philadelphia’s early season defensive struggles (3.57 GA/G). With that said, Oliver Ekman-Larsson lit the lamp on two occasions in their last game and has already racked up four goals on the young season. He led this entire Arizona team in points last season and is the one ‘Yote on my cash game radar this evening. Up-front, Radim Vrbata is off to a nice start in his return to the desert. He’s scored three goals and added two assists in six games this season and remains very willing to throw the puck at the net as much as possible. Vrbata is joined on the top forward line and #2 power-play unit by the solid tandem of Max Domi and Martin Hanzal on what will likely be the primary source of offense for Dave Tippett all season. Meanwhile, Jordan Martinook has been a pleasant surprise early on and finds himself tied with Vrbata at five points. He’s earned a spot as the center of the second forward line and was even given some action on the power-play in their last game.

After a sluggish start against the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday, the Flyers stormed back with three goals in the third period to ultimately win a 4-3 shootout decision to bring their record to 3-3-1 on the young season. They have another very favorable matchup awaiting them tonight as the Arizona Coyotes come to town having allowed an NHL worst 4.33 goals against per game this season while also allowing a league high 34.5 SA/G. The Flyers rely heavily on their top two scoring lines to provide their offense and I’m expecting both to get plenty of consideration this evening in all game formats. Claude Giroux has yet to find the back of the net this season, but he still leads the Flyers in points as he’s racked up eight assists in the first seven games. The All-Star forward is joined by Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds both on the top forward line and #1 power-play unit and all three look like very strong targets this evening. Meanwhile, Giroux’s former partner-in-crime Jakub Voracek is also off to a fine start to the season and his presence alongside Travis Konecny and Sean Couturier has given Dave Hakstol a very capable secondary scoring line. Voracek also has the luxury of joining three forwards from the top line on the #1 power-play unit which is gives him a big fantasy boost as the Coyotes owned an abysmal 77.3% penalty kill last season. With that poor penalty kill in mind, the Flyers also have several very viable options on the blue-line. Shayne Gostisbehere quarterbacks the #1 power-play unit and looks to be well worth his big-ticket asking price in this matchup. Meanwhile, Mark Streit showed he still has plenty left in the tank with a three point performance against Buffalo on Tuesday and is joined by very talented rookie Ivan Provorov on the point of the second power-play unit. If you’re looking for some value on the blue-line, both players are very much in play this evening.

After back-to-back lackluster performances, I think it’s safe to say that Bruce Boudreau laid into his Minnesota hockey club prior to Tuesday’s game in Boston. The likely tongue lashing resulted in an inspired performance up and down the lineup as the Wild skated to an impressive 5-0 victory over the Bruins and will now head to Buffalo looking to finish off their four game road trip with another victory. The Buffalo Sabres are undoubtedly improving, but their still banged up a bit on offense and have allowed 3.00 goals against per game thus far this season. With that in mind, there is some opportunity here for the Wild to get on the scoreboard early and often tonight. Boudreau has been mixing up his forward lines a bit lately, but it’s still his top six forwards that require your attention tonight. Zach Parise is the headliner and is off to a fine start with a pair of goals and three assists in the first seven games. It looks like he’ll be joined by the duo of Mikko Koivu and Mikael Granlund on the top forward line and slide in alongside Eric Staal and Nino Niederreiter on the #1 power-play unit. That leaves the talented Charlie Coyle to line up alongside Staal and Niederreiter on the second line with the 24 year-old also seeing a healthy dose of playing time with the second power-play unit. On defense, Ryan Suter looks like a fine option this evening in all formats. He’s not only leading the Wild with seven points through the first seven games (two goals and five assists), but is also guaranteed to be among the league leaders in average ice-time per game once again this season. If you’re looking for some cost savings on the blue-line, Minnesota is hoping to have Jared Spurgeon back in action tonight and he should step back into nearly 25 minutes of playing time. If healthy, he figures to build upon the career high 29 points he posted last season and is rapidly becoming more and more of a weapon on the point of the #2 power-play unit.

Injuries have hit the Buffalo Sabres very hard to start the season, and after blowing a 3-0 lead in Philadelphia tonight, they’ll finally head back home owning an unflattering 1-2-2 record after five games. With star forwards Jack Eichel and Evander Kane still sidelined for the foreseeable future, the scoring weight falls firmly on the Ryan O’Reilly and Kyle Okposo (with Matt Moulson) on the top forward line. Those three are also slated to skate together on the #1 power-play unit where they’ll also be joined by Sam Reinhart and looking much deeper than that seems unnecessary this evening (especially in cash games). O’Reilly lead this team with 60 points last season and is off and running once again this year as he’s racked up three goals and three assists in the first five games. Meanwhile, Okposo missed the season opener but has looked comfortable with his new team and has added a goal and three assists in his four appearances this season. On defense, Rasmus Ristolainen looks to be on the verge of NHL stardom. The former first round pick has already dished out six assists this season and runs the show on the point of their #1 power-play unit. He’s one of the biggest beneficiaries from FanDuel’s new scoring system (where he still looks underpriced) and deserves a small upgrade tonight as Minnesota struggled their way to an ugly 77.9% penalty kill last season.

The Panthers should be a highly motivated hockey club tonight when they hit the ice at the Air Canada Centre as they’re fresh off a very disappointing loss to Pittsburgh in which they let a 2-0 lead slip away in the third period. Florida finished on top of the Atlantic Division last season and will be very disappointed if they’re unable to leave with two points against a Toronto team who they defeated in three of their four meetings last season. Toronto is undeniably a team on the rise, but they’ve allowed an ugly 4.17 goals against per game thus far this season and Mike Babcock still has a ways to go before molding the Maple Leafs into a playoff contender. The Panthers are not a team that likes to push the pace offensively and therefore often don’t make for the most intriguing DFS picks, but they simply can’t be ignored in this matchup. Key injuries to the likes of Nick Bjugstad, Jonathan Huberdeau and Jussi Jokinen have really thinned out the Panthers forward depth, but that does make it pretty easy to safely target their top forward line. Somewhat surprisingly Jonathan Marchessault leads the Panthers with three goals and five assists on the young season and looks very comfortable playing alongside Aleksander Barkov and Jaromir Jagr both at even strength and one the #1 power-play unit. With Toronto trailing only the Dallas Stars in pace of play this season (122.45 CP60), all three should skate into a few added scoring opportunities tonight. On defense, both Keith Yandle and Aaron Ekblad shoot up my rankings this evening. They not only also see a boost from the increased pace, but both players also see a very healthy dose of playing time on the point of the Panther’s #1 power-play unit.

Four straight losses have pushed the Maple Leafs to an uninspiring 1-2-3 start, but there is still plenty of energy pouring out of their fan base. There’s no secret that the team is still in the midst of a rebuild, but with Auston Matthews leading the league 10 points in six games, the future in Toronto looks very bright for the first time in recent memory. Matthews has racked up six goals and four assists in his first six games at the NHL level and the #1 overall pick has really helped elevate the games of his linemate and fellow first round pick William Nylander. Nylander has now tallied at least one point in four straight games and will hit the ice tonight owning four goals, five assists and sits tied with Matthews for the team lead with 26 SOG. Those two not only play together in 5 on 5 situations, but also join forces with the more experienced duo of Nazem Kadri and Leo Komarov on the Leaf’s #1 power-play unit. Alternatively, James van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak and rookie Mitchell Marner have proven to be a very capable secondary scoring line and those three also happened to see the lions share of the playing time with the man advantage in the Leafs last game. With all of that said, this matchup is very tough as the Florida Panthers are very stingy in their own end, own a rock solid penalty kill (with great goaltending) and suppress shots just about as well as any other team in the NHL. On defense, Morgan Rielly, Nikita Zaitsev and Jake Gardiner all sit tied with four points on the young season and figure to be the only fantasy relevant options on the Toronto blue-line this season. While Morgan Rielly seems like the best bet for fantasy production long-term, he was barely used on the power-play against Tampa Bay their last time out (losing minutes to Connor Carrick) so it’s probably wise to take a wait-and-see approach as things shake out there.

The Tampa Bay Lightning entered the season as a common pick to win the Stanley Cup this time around, and after an impressive 5-1-0 start, they certainly look to be one of the NHL’s elite teams. John Cooper will lead his team into the Bell Centre tonight in what is a battle for the lead in the Atlantic Division. While squaring off against Carey Price is never an easy task, this Tampa Bay offensive has been firing on all cylinders early on this season and overlooking them can be a costly move. They’re fresh off of a seven goal performance against the Toronto Maple Leafs in their last outing and are now averaging a league best 3.83 goals per game. As was the case last year, it’s the top two forward lines that are responsible for the bulk of Tampa’s offense. Steven Stamkos is the household name and off to a terrific start with five goals and four assists over the first six games of the season. He’s slated to center the top forward line alongside Vladislav Namestnikov and Nikita Kucherov with all three players also seeing plenty of playing time on the power-play. Meanwhile, Ondrej Palat, Tyler Johnson and Jonathan Drouin combine forces on a very dangerous secondary scoring line and have plenty of GPP appeal as they generally receive far less attention than their offensive counterparts. On defense, Victor Hedman lit the lamp for his first goal of the season on Tuesday and has blossomed into one of the most consistent defensemen in the league. He and Anton Stralman soak up nearly all of the available minutes on the point of the Lightning power-play and therefore the two options worth digging into here.

In a very tightly contested battle, the Canadiens improved to an NHL best 6-0-1 with a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders in Brooklyn last night. They’re not faced with the unenviable task of traveling home tonight before facing a very talented Tampa Bay team. While it’s definitely not one of the better matchups on the board, the Canadiens did defeat Tampa Bay in four meetings last season, so you’ll want to dig in a bit more here than you may have initially thought. Up-front, it’s the top line of Max Pacioretty, Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher that has carried the offensive load thus far and will likely be counted on doing so going forward as well. Those four combined for six goals and seven assists in just ten combined games played against the Lightning last season and all three join forces on the team’s very dangerous #1 power-play unit. Alexander Radulov also grabs a spot on that top power-play and he’s now racked up two goals and three assists in the last five games. Shea Weber occupies a spot on the point of the #1 power-play where he’s very willing to fire his 100+ mph slap shot towards then net with frequency. He leads the team with nine points (three goals and six assists) and can rack up fantasy points with the peripheral stats as well making him a top tier option on the blue-line.
