Shoemaker has been a quality option in good matchups for the majority of the season, holding a 3.82 SIERA and a 21.9% strikeout rate. Today, he does have a tough matchup, as the Indians have brought up their rank against righties to fifth in wOBA and third in ISO. Shoemaker is priced very fairly tonight considering the matchup, making him a tournament play, but one with a lot of risk.

Cleveland
Vegas has Cleveland as slight favorites tonight, and with a run total of 4.64 (seventh-highest). While I don’t fully agree with the total, if you trust Vegas, a number of Indians bats should be in play. Shoemaker has been a bit of a reverse splits pitcher this year, as he has allowed a .337 wOBA to righties.

deGrom has had a great season for the Mets. He has a 3.55 SIERA and an above average 23.8% strikeout rate. The matchup tonight is great against the Padres, who are ranked 29th in wOBA and 20th in ISO against righties, while striking out at a high 24.4% clip. He is right there tonight with Bumgarner for top pitcher, yet has a much better matchup tonight, making him a bit safer.

Avoid the Padres bats tonight as they have the lowest projected run total (2.81) and face DeGrom who has kept batters from both sides of the plate to a wOBA under .291.

The Mets offense is not one we usually want to target a lot of batters from, as they have been sputtering recently. They do have a decent 4.19-run total today and get a great matchup against Cosart, who has allowed a .343+ wOBA from both sides of the plate.

Boyd has been a serviceable starter for the Tigers this season, as he has a 4.69 ERA (4.26 SIERA) after 10 starts. Yet, his 20.9% strikeout rate is not enough of an upside kick considering the matchup. Tonight, he faces the Rangers, who are ranked in the top half of the league against lefties and have a huge team total. He is not a terrible pitcher, but one to avoid tonight.

Hamels comes into this game as a -180 favorite against a solid Detroit Tigers squad. Hamels has a lot of blue and green on his chart, as he has been great over his last five starts with a 1.83 ERA (3.49 SIERA), as well as a solid 25.9% strikeout rate. The matchup is tough, making Bumgarner and deGrom safer options, but he makes a solid tournament play tonight.

Gausman has been a good source of value/mid-level priced pitching this season. He has a 3.81 SIERA on the year to go along with a solid 22.7% strikeout rate. His matchup today is not ideal, as the Giants strike out at a low rate and run support may be difficult against Bumgarner. He is an SP2 tonight.

Bumgarner is another guy with a lot of blue and green on that board, as he comes into this game with a 3.33 SIERA and great 27.7% strikeout rate. As we have seen this season, the Orioles have surprisingly struggled against lefties, as they are ranked 26th in wOBA and 18th in ISO. Bumgarner has elite upside and a high floor every time he takes the mound and is arguably the top option going tonight. I see deGrom as a slightly better option, but both can win you tournaments tonight.

Baltimore
Bumgarner has kept both righties and lefties to a wOBA of under .271 this season, and the Orioles have a projected run total of just 3.12 tonight for the second lowest on the day. Avoid their offense.

Gausman has been a reverse splits pitcher this year, sporting a .370 wOBA allowed to righties. This bodes well for the likes of Posey and Pence up front, but the rest of the offense can be avoided today.

Iwakuma has been solid recently, as he has put up a 2.08 ERA over his last five starts . His SIERA of 3.71 shows promise, and the 23.3% strikeout rate is what can make him a usable daily fantasy starter tonight. He is a slight favorite in one of the few games with a low total tonight, making him a solid play against the Athletics, who are ranked in the bottom third in most of the offensive categories listed below.

Graveman is never a pitcher to target in any format. He has a high SIERA (4.55) and a very low strikeout rate (14.1%). Those two stats alone should take him out of consideration in any matchup.

Graveman should be attacked with the Mariners lefty bats, as he has allowed a .357 wOBA to lefties on the season. The Mariners have a low team total, but don’t shy away from some of their value up front.
