Bud Norris : FD: $6,800 — DK: $7,600

Philadelphia Phillies Offense (2015)

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.278 (Rank: 27) — Strikeout Rate: 19.5% (Rank: 9)
Pitchers per PA: 3.72 (Rank: 26)
Analysis: After a rough start to the season, Norris has bounced back nicely since returning from the DL. In those two starts, he has a 2.80 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 25.5%. I’ll side with the larger sample size, but in a matchup against the Phillies, he could certainly post a quality start. The Phillies are ranked dead last in wOBA (.272) against right-handed pitching, they are ranked 27th in wOBA (.278) over the last 14 days, and they average the fifth-fewest pitches per plate appearance. Pitching is scarce in the early slate of games, making Norris a viable SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.
Pitcher Rating:59.6
Sean O’Sullivan : FD: $4,900 — DK: $4,600
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 64.0 — SIERA: 5.03 — K%: 9.6% — BB%: 6.1% — FB Rate: 35.3% — HR/FB: 15.2%

Baltimore Orioles Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.316 (Rank: 13) — Strikeout Rate: 22.6% (Rank: 27)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.321 (Rank: 8) — Strikeout Rate: 22.7% (Rank: 26)
Pitchers per PA: 3.77 (Rank: 17)
Analysis: O’Sullivan has been downright awful over the last month of play, posting a 5.59 SIERA with a strikeout rate (6.9%) that mirrors his walk rate (6.9%). Anytime a pitcher is giving up more walks than strikeouts, he should automatically be avoided in daily fantasy baseball. The surging Orioles’ offense will likely have yet another field day against this Phillies’ pitching staff.

Analysis: Machado was hitless in last night’s win, but he still has a .406 wOBA and a .192 ISO over the last 14 days. He has good numbers against right-handed pitching and he is swinging one of the hottest bats in baseball. He draws a favorable matchup today against Sean O’Sullivan. Even though there is a game in Coors Field, the Orioles should be considered one of the top offenses to target in the early slate of games.

The Phillies are still the worst offense against right-handed pitching this season. While the matchup against Bud Norris is appealing, the Phillies are secondary fantasy options in the early slate. There is such little upside with this offense right now.

Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.267 (Rank: 29) — Strikeout Rate: 18.8% (Rank: 8)
Pitchers per PA: 3.79 (Rank: 15)
Analysis: Garcia is coming off of his best outing of the season, striking out six Royals’ batters in eight scoreless innings of work. He has some tremendous numbers since the start of last season with a 2.84 SIERA and a strikeout rate of 20.7%. It’s time to start trusting the numbers as the sample size continues to get bigger. While the Twins have made it tough on a few left-handed pitchers this season, they are still ranked 18th in wOBA (.309) against southpaws on the season. Garcia has a good chance to pick up another win today, as run support shouldn’t be an issue with Mike Pelfrey pitching opposite him.
Pitcher Rating:72.8

Pitchers per PA: 3.75 (Rank: 23)
Analysis: Pelfrey has pitched better recently, but he is still doesn’t fit the mold of an appealing pitcher in daily fantasy baseball. He has an average SIERA with a below-average strikeout rate. Even though the Cardinals’ offense is short-handed at the moment, they are still a very capable offense against right-handed pitching. Pelfrey can safely be avoided in the early slate of games.

Analysis: Reynolds has never been known for his ability to hit right-handed pitching, but with all of the injuries, he remains the Cardinals’ clean-up hitter. He has performed admirably thus far, posting a .355 wOBA and a .190 ISO over the last 14 days. He draws a favorable matchup against Mike Pelfrey, who has given up a .378 wOBA to right-handed hitters in the last two seasons.

The Twins are a much better offense against southpaws than they are against right-handed pitching, but the matchup against Jaime Garcia is less than ideal. He is a reverses-splits pitcher, which hurts the fantasy appeal of the Twins’ right-handed hitters. For that reason, they are secondary fantasy plays in the early slate.

Analysis: Don’t let Collin McHugh splits scare you off of the Rockies today. While he has held left and right-handed hitters under a .310 wOBA over the last two seasons, this is Coors Field that we are talking about. Gonzalez has really played well at home over the last few weeks and he has feasted on Astros’ pitching in this series. With no aces on the mound in the early slate, it’s fairly easy to load up on Coors bats.

Analysis: Kennedy is slowly rounding into form. He has pitched well over the last month, posting a 3.28 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 25.2%. The issue with Kennedy today is his matchup. The A’s are one of the toughest offenses for a pitcher to face, as they rarely strike out and they tend to drive up pitch counts. The A’s are ranked 8th in wOBA (.321) and 5th in strikeout rate (17.6%) against right-handed pitching this season. I’d much rather take my chances with Jaime Garcia in the early slate.

Analysis: It appears that Graveman has his confidence back after being sent back down to the minors. In his last two starts, he has struck out 13 batters while only giving up two earned runs in 15 innings of work. He is an interesting play today against the Padres and he’ll likely fly under the radar. On the season, the Padres are ranked 26th in wOBA (.293) and 25th in strikeout rate (21.9%) against right-handed pitching. Graveman is a sizable favorite and I wouldn’t blame you for using him in cash games and/or tournaments.

Kendall Graveman has struggled against left-handed hitters this season, but he has been sharp in his last two starts. The Padres are also one of the worst offenses against right-handed pitching. I see the left-handed hitters in this lineup as secondary options in the early slate.

His numbers against right-handed pitching may not jump off the page, but he’s a streaky player that is seeing the ball well right now. He draws a favorable matchup against Ian Kennedy, who has struggled against left-handed hitters throughout his career.

Arizona Diamondbacks Offense (2015)
vs. LH Pitching: wOBA: 0.314 (Rank: 11) — Strikeout Rate: 19.7% (Rank: 10)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.312 (Rank: 15) — Strikeout Rate: 21.1% (Rank: 19)
Pitchers per PA: 3.65 (Rank: 30)
Analysis: Wilson has pitched well over the last month of play, posting a 3.63 SIERA with a high strikeout rate of 25.2%. If this game was being played in Los Angeles, he would deserve consideration, but I’m not thrilled with his matchup against the Diamonbacks in the hitter-friendly Chase Field.
Pitcher Rating:59.7
Allen Webster : FD: $5,400 — DK: $7,200
Pitching Stats:
2014 – 2015: IP: 64.2 — SIERA: 5.05 — K%: 13.5% — BB%: 11.0% — FB Rate: 33.0% — HR/FB: 4.5%

LA Angels of Anaheim Offense (2015)
vs. RH Pitching: wOBA: 0.299 (Rank: 22) — Strikeout Rate: 19.9% (Rank: 17)
Last 14 Days: wOBA: 0.305 (Rank: 19) — Strikeout Rate: 21.3% (Rank: 21)
Pitchers per PA: 3.76 (Rank: 19)
Analysis: Webster will draw the start for the Diamondbacks today. Since the start of 2014, he has a 5.05 SIERA with a low strikeout rate of 13.5%. While the Angels’ offense has struggled against right-handed pitching this season, they have been much better in recent weeks. The low strikeout rate is more than enough reason to avoid Webster in the hitter-friendly Chase Field.

Last 14 Days: PA: 50 — wOBA: 0.449 — ISO: 0.378 — wRC+: 201
Analysis: Since the start of 2014, Allen Webster has given up a .337 wOBA to right-handed hitters. In that same time period, Trout has a .405 wOBA and a .286 ISO against right-handed pitching. Trout has been swinging a hot bat recently and he sees a favorable ballpark shift today playing in the hitter-friendly Chase Field.

Last 14 Days: PA: 57 — wOBA: 0.528 — ISO: 0.286 — wRC+: 238
Analysis: I learned my lesson yesterday. I faded Goldschmidt because his price was a little too expensive. It was the wrong decision, as he hit another home run. In the last two seasons, he has an impressive .482 wOBA with a .248 ISO against southpaws. Target all of the right-handed hitters in this lineup.
