Iwakuma comes into this game off of two very solid efforts where he allowed just one earned run in 13.2 innings while posting 14 strikeouts. This has brought his ERA down to 4.07 (4.41 SIERA). The problem today in using Iwakuma is the matchup against a tough Blue Jays offense in Rogers Centre along with his low 18% strikeout rate on the year. He is a very risky play today on a short early slate against a Blue Jays offense ranked seventh in wOBA and fifth in ISO against righties.

Dickey is simply not someone we need to target actively in any DFS format. He has a 4.77 SIERA on the year to go along with a low 17% strikeout rate. The matchup against the Mariners is very tough, as they are ranked fifth in wOBA and seventh in ISO against righties. The upside is simply not there for Dickey as this game is projected to be the highest scoring game of the day slate.
Batter Grind Down
Seattle
This game looks like the one to target in the early slate for cash games, as both of these pitchers are projected to give up a number of runs. The Mariners have the second- highest projected run total of the early slate at 4.52 runs. Dickey is attackable from both sides of the plate, as he has allowed a .322 wOBA to righties and a .354 wOBA to lefties. While everyone will attack the Toronto bats, loading up on the Mariners is not a bad option either.

The Blue Jays feature the fifth-highest projected total of the day and the highest of the three-game early slate. The Blue Jays get a solid matchup against Iwakuma, who has allowed a 314+ wOBA from both sides of the plate this year. If you are playing the early slate, they are a great offense to target.

Nola broke a month-long string of terrible starts in his last outing, returning from the break to throw six innings of scoreless ball. He will look to continue that momentum today against a Pirates team that is ranked as an average offense against right-handed pitching. Even with his bad stretch, Nola sports a solid 3.11 SIERA and an above-average strikeout rate of 25.5%. Assuming the break was good for him, Nola should be looked at as one of the top pitching options of the three-game day slate.

Glasnow made his first career start prior to the break and had to face a tough Cardinals offense, which partially explains the four earned runs allowed. But he has a solid future ahead of him and has solid upside, as he is projected to be a strikeout-per-inning starter in the majors and now gets a much better second matchup against the Phillies, who rank in the bottom of the league in wOBA against righties and runs per game. He is a heavy favorite and, although not the safest play, looks like the top option on the day slate, especially at FanDuel, where he is basically free.

Philadelphia
While the other two games look to be the ones to target the offenses, this one does not appear to be the same on paper. Glasnow wasn’t elite in his first start, but he is a top prospect for the Pirates and now gets the Phillies, who have the lowest projected team total of the early slate. Like the Pirates’ breakdown, the Phillies should only be used if you want to go fully contrarian in the early slate.

Samardzija has really struggled over the last month, allowing at least four earned runs in four of his last five starts while giving up seven home runs during that span. His matchup against the Yankees is nothing scary, as they are in the bottom third of the league in wOBA against righties and runs per game. More importantly for Samardzija, though, is the fact that they are lefty heavy, which could bode badly for the Shark, who has struggled with lefty bats this year (.352 wOBA allowed). This makes using Samardzija a risky play for the day slate.

Nova has had a disappointing year so far, as he has allowed a 4.92 ERA on the season, but his 3.94 second-half SIERA shows that he’s making improvements. His matchup today against the Giants is not terrible, as they are ranked 11th in wOBA and 27th in ISO against righties. His low season strikeout rate makes me like the two pitchers in the previous game better for the day slate.

The Yankees have the third-highest total of the day slate, as they face off against the Shark today. It will be interesting to see which Samardzija shows up today – the one we saw early in the season, or the one who has seen his ERA rise two runs over the last month and a half. Tomlin sports a 4.29 SIERA on the year to go along with his low 16.3% strikeout rate. The low strikeout rate along with the matchup against the Orioles makes him an easy avoid tonight on the big slate that features way to many studs to go with such a low-upside play against a team is ranked third in both wOBA and ISO against righties.

Gausman has been a decent pick at times this year, as his price has been too low in certain matchups. This is not one of those times. Even though he does have a solid 3.78 SIERA and a decent 22.1% strikeout rate, today’s matchup negates those numbers a bit, as the Indians have been solid against righties, ranking sixth in wOBA and second in ISO. There are better pitchers in better spots tonight, but he is still very cheap at Draftkings making him worth a look for tournaments.

The Indians have an average projected run total of 4.28 today, as they are ranked 14th of the 30 teams playing today. The Indians are not a top offense to target, as Gausman has held lefties to a .273 while looking like a reverse splits pitcher the last two seasons.

Baltimore
Baltimore comes into this game with the eighth-highest projected run total of the day (4.72) as they get to face off against Tomlin. They fared well yesterday in a tougher matchup and now get Tomlin, who has struggled a bit against righties, allowing a wOBA of .325 on the season. Looking at the list, the top seven guys all hit righties very well and could be in play today.

Jackson actually pitched well in his first start for San Diego, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He ended up giving up two runs in 6.1 innings while striking out four. I wouldn’t put a whole lot of faith into that start as he has not had a SIERA under 4.00 in the last three seasons and has one of the lowest strikeout rates (15.1%) of any starter going tonight. He is an easy fade against the Nationals.

Wow, there a lot of good pitching options going tonight. You can count at least five clear cut aces, which means there are going to have to be some tough choices when taking your starter. Scherzer is in an unbelievably good spot tonight, as he gets to take his 2.96 SIERA and elite 32.3% strikeout rate into his home field against a Padres offense that is ranked 29th in team wOBA and strike out at a very high 24.6% rate. He is in a top spot, and due to the fact that Fernandez and DeGrom are facing each other tonight (making the win tough to predict in that game), Scherzer gets the top spot for me.

I have a hard time thinking that Jackson will be able to take a no-hitter into the second inning, let alone the sixth again. The Nationals are monster favorites today and have a projected team total of 4.90 runs, which is the seventh highest of the day. Jackson has allowed a career wOBA of .331+ from both sides of the plate, putting the two big lefties as elite play, while the rest of the plays are secondary.
