Samardzija got off to a quick start this season, but has been unraveling ever since. Over the last month of play, he has a 5.43 SIERA (6.85 ERA) with a strikeout rate of only 13.5% and a walk rate of 8.5%. His velocity has been fine this season, but his swinging strike rate is at its lowest point since 2010. He draws a fairly difficult matchup against the Marlins, who are ranked tenth in team wOBA and fifth in team K% against right-handed pitching this season. Until Samardzija can flash some form, he should continue to be avoided in all league formats.

Phelps doesn’t have the best track record as a starter, but he looked sharp in his first start of the season. He struck out four batters in four scoreless innings against the Rockies in Coors Field. He only threw 70 pitches though, and will be on a pitch count again today. The Marlins may look to extend him in this start, but don’t expect much more than 75 pitches, which obviously limits his upside. The good news is that he is only $5,500 on both FanDuel and DraftKings, so five innings is more than enough to reach and exceed value if you like his matchup against Giants. I typically don’t love picking on the Giants, as they have the second lowest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching this season.
Batter Grind Down
San Francisco
The Giants’ offense should have a nice finish to the season. They are finally healthy and the addition of Eduardo Nunez only solidifies the bottom of their lineup. They draw a mediocre matchup today against David Phelps, who has been great out of the bullpen, but mediocre as a starter in his career. Of the six teams playing in the early slate, the Giants have the second lowest run projection. The left-handed bats of Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford are my favorite plays here, but they are secondary options at their respective positions.

The Marlins have been a nice surprise this season. If the playoffs started today, they would find themselves as a Wildcard. Their offense is in a good spot today against Jeff Samardzija, whose form has been in question for the better part of two months. Samardzija has really struggled with hitters from the left side of the plate, allowing a .355 wOBA and a 30.9% hard hit contact rate in the last two seasons. Dee Gordon does lose some fantasy appeal if Buster Posey draws the start behind the plate. He has the second highest caught stealing rate (46.8%) for a catcher this season.

Hellickson has a 3.06 ERA in his last five starts, but his ERA estimators (SIERA & FIP) both suggest that some regression could be looming. Hellickson has managed to limit the hard hit contact against him this season (26.4%), but he comes into the game as the largest underdog in the early slate and the second largest underdog in the all-day slate. The Dodgers haven’t been great against right-handed pitching on the season, but they have come alive in this series. They are also a more formidable lineup with Josh Reddick batting clean-up against righties.

Kazmir is a tough pitcher to predict. His form seems to come and go with each and every start. He has allowed at least three earned runs in four of his last five outings, but comes into today’s game as one of the biggest favorites on the board. He is pitching at home and he gets to face a Phillies’ offense that is ranked 30th in team wOBA and 29th in team ISO against left-handed pitching this season. The upside is certainly there for Kazmir, but the Phillies have four above-average right-handed hitters in their lineup that he will have to deal with. He is my favorite pitcher in the early slate, but that says more about the other starters than it does about Kazmir.
Batter Grind Down
Philadelphia
The Phillies may not hit left-handed pitching well as a whole, but Aaron Altherr, Maikel Franco, Tommy Joseph, and Cameron Rupp are all capable right-handed hitters. The Phillies are no longer an auto-fade offensively. Even though they have the lowest implied team total in the entire slate, you can give these four hitters a look as one-offs in tournaments. Scott Kazmir has allowed 29 home runs to right-handed hitters in the last two seasons.

LA Dodgers
As I mentioned above, the Dodgers are a much better offense with Josh Reddick batting clean-up against right-handed pitching. They are currently ranked right around the major league average in most offensive categories, but I expect that to change down the stretch of the regular season. They draw an exploitable matchup against Jeremy Hellickson, who has allowed a .339 wOBA and a 31.5% hard hit contact rate to left-handed hitters in the last two seasons. That bodes well for this Dodgers’ lineup that could have seven of their eight position players hitting from that side of the plate.

Tomlin is one of those pitchers that I have a hard time rostering. His numbers are down across the board this season. The two most alarming statistics are the low strikeout rate and the low swinging strike rate. He doesn’t induce a particularly high ground ball rate and he has allowed a hard hit contact rate of 33.6% this season. The Indians are only small underdogs today against the Nationals, but I see this one as a one-sided affair.

Gonzalez is always a wildcard when he is pitching on the road, but is generally predictable when he is at home in the pitcher-friendly Nationals Park. Here is a quick glance at his home/road splits in 2016:
*Home: 3.44 xFIP / 26.2% strikeout rate / .299 wOBA allowed
*Road: 4.57 xFIP / 18.1% strikeout rate / .321 wOBA allowed
Gonzalez isn’t as big of a favorite as Kazmir and he doesn’t have as good of a matchup, but he is the clear number two option in the early slate. The Indians are a much better offense against right-handed pitching than they are against left-handed pitching and they won’t be able to utilize the DH.
Batter Grind Down
Cleveland
The Indians have a higher run projection than expected. Gio Gonzalez has been much better at home throughout his career and the Indians are a below-average offense against left-handed pitching. They are also playing on the road in a National League ballpark. Gonzalez has struggled a bit with right-handed hitters in the last two years (.320 wOBA allowed), but this ballpark negates some of that. I see the Indians as deep GPP plays in this matchup.

The Nationals find themselves in a good spot today against Josh Tomlin. He doesn’t have overwhelming velocity, he doesn’t induce a high ground ball rate, and he allows a lot of hard contact to right-handed hitters. The interesting thing about this matchup is that Tomlin is an extreme reverse-splits pitcher. Over the course of the last two seasons, he has held lefties to a .258 wOBA while giving up a .343 wOBA to righties. Even though the splits may not be in their favor, Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy are still strong plays in the early slate.

Jackson has struggled mightily this season, posting a 5.52 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 12.7% and a walk rate of 10.1%. It’s always a red flag when a pitcher walks nearly as many batter as he strikes out. The Pirates’ offense hasn’t been great this season, but Jackson is facing them in Pittsburgh in a game that features an over/under of 9.0 runs. There isn’t enough upside to justify the play – Jackson should be avoided in both cash games and tournaments.

Vogelsong pitched well in his first start back from injury. He struck out six batters in six innings of work against the Braves, allowing a single run in the process. He only threw 83 pitches in that start, but we could see him throw 85-90 tonight against the Padres. This is a boom or bust type of play. While the Padres’ offense has been better in the last couple of months, they are still ranked 29th in both team wOBA and team K% against right-handed pitching. Vogelsong offers good value on FanDuel, but I’m not sure that I will have any exposure to him with so many options on the mound tonight.

The Padres have a slightly above-average run projection tonight, as they square off against Ryan Vogelsong in the pitcher-friendly PNC Park. This is one of the easier matchups to break down, as Vogelsong splits by handedness clearly favor one side of the plate. In the last two seasons combined, he has allowed a .384 wOBA and a hard hit contact rate of 34.1% to left-handed hitters. Travis Jankowski, Alex Dickerson, and Ryan Schimpf are all nice contrarian options.

The Pirates are ranked below the major league average in team wOBA, team ISO, and team K% against right-handed pitching this season. That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement, but they do have the sixth highest run projection on the board. They draw a favorable matchup against Edwin Jackson, who has allowed a .344 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .331 wOBA to right-handed hitters in his career. This is a good spot to target the leadoff hitter from the Pirates, whether it ends up being Josh Harrison or Adam Frazier.

Snell is one of the Rays’ top pitching prospects. He is starting to show why they are so high on him. In his last four starts, he has a 3.50 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 31.2%. He doesn’t induce a ton of ground balls, but his fly balls haven’t been hit hard (28.6% on the season). The biggest issue with Snell is his matchup against the Blue Jays, whose lineup is littered with right-handed power hitters. As a large underdog on the road in a hitter’s park, there is more risk than potential reward for Snell tonight.

Happ has been sharp in his last four starts, posting a 3.46 SIERA (1.82 ERA) with a strikeout rate of 30.1%. His price on DraftKings is a bit inflated, but he is sitting at a playable $9,200 on FanDuel. He draws a boom or bust type of matchup against the Rays, who have good power against southpaws, but also have one of the highest strikeouts rates in the majors. Happ looks to be a safe cash game play, as he is a huge favorite at home.

The Rays may strikeout at a high rate, but they are ranked 12th in team wOBA and 11th in team ISO against left-handed pitching this season. They see a nice ballpark boost playing in the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre and their matchup against J.A. Happ isn’t as bad as the Vegas line suggests. Over the last two seasons, Happ has allowed 26 home runs and a hard hit contact rate of 30.8% to right-handed hitters.

The Blue Jays’ lineup is filled with right-handed bats that can hit left-handed pitching. In fact, if you look at the projected lineup below, not a single player has an ISO under .180 against southpaws in the last two seasons combined. Blake Snell has shown some nice upside recently, but he may be outmatched tonight in the Rogers Centre. Drew Smyly was able to quiet the Blue Jays’ hitters last night, but Snell will have a tough time finding that same type of success.
