The hype surrounding Severino is warranted, after he posted a 2.84 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22% last season. He produced an elite ground ball rate and he only gave up a 20% line drive rate. The main issue with Severino last season was how careful the Yankees were with him. He typically topped out at around 90 pitches, so he rarely pitched more than five or six innings. From what I can tell, the Yankees may do the same again this season. He still offers great strikeout potential, but he’s not going to be throwing any complete games anytime soon. Given the fact that he is pitching against the talented Tigers’ offense in Detroit, he can be avoided on Friday.

Zimmermann may not have the highest strikeout rate in baseball, but he has been one of the most reliable and durable pitchers in baseball. Since 2012, he has thrown at least 190 innings every year, while posting a strikeout rate of at least 18%. His move to the American League may impact his fantasy production this season though, as he no longer gets the luxury of facing the opposing pitcher in the lineup. Zimmermann opens as a small favorite against the Yankees, who have scored a combined 29 runs in their first three games. Both of these pitchers are talented, but the difficult matchups are more than enough reason to fade both.

NY Yankees
It’s always tough to predict games where we have two quality pitchers, but a fairly high run total. Luckily, since there is a game in Coors Field (which is included in the early and all-day slate), we may not have to take any hitters from either team in this one. New York’s matchup is less than ideal, but did allow a .336 wOBA (and 11 home runs) to left-handed hitters last season. The Yankees can be used as pivots in tournaments, but there are better options for cash games.

The Tigers have the fourth highest team total in the early slate and the 12th highest team total of the 28 teams in action today. In other words, their offense is expected to produce at a decent level against . This would typically be a decent spot to target some hitters, but with a game in Coors Field, you don’t need to load up on Tigers. They are similar to the Yankees’ hitters in that they are better targets for GPPs than they are for cash games.

Eickhoff pitched very well in the first eight starts of his career, posting a 3.56 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.1%. He has a nasty slider, but many are expecting some regression this season. He was never considered a top prospect and his command isn’t great. He is also pitching for the Phillies, who may compete for honors as the worst team in the National League this season. Eickhoff opens as a massive underdog against the Mets in New York. He should be avoided in all league formats.

The Mets’ starting rotation is just nasty. They basically get to throw an ace out on the mound every single night. DeGrom may be the Mets’ true ace. He finished the 2015 season with a 2.99 SIERA and a strikeout rate of 27.3%. He was close to unhittable at home and today he gets to face a Phillies’ offense that may be the least talented in the National League. DeGrom is my favorite pitcher in the entire Friday slate, so get him into your early and all-day lineups. The only concern with deGrom is that he is awaiting the birth of his child. Let’s hope that it doesn’t happen in the middle of his start.

Philadelphia
The Phillies have the lowest team total on the board tonight. I have them projected to score 2.5 runs (based on the line) and even that seems high. They draw an awful matchup against Jacob deGrom and they have to face him in the pitcher-friendly Citi Field. DeGrom was absolutely dominant against right-handed hitters last season (.209 wOBA allowed) and he held left-handed bats under a .290 wOBA. The Phillies’ offense should not be on your radar today.

NY Mets
Of the eight teams in the early slate, the Mets have the third lowest team total. While I don’t mind their matchup against , I would much rather save my roster spots for the hitters in Coors Field. Basically, I am going to max out my exposure to the Coors game, which leaves doesn’t leave a lot of room for much else. If you want to look at the Mets in GPPs, Eickhoff did allow a .353 wOBA to left-handed hitters last season.

Salazar was originally slated to pitch yesterday against the Red Sox, but that game was postponed due to rain. His start will be pushed back to Friday against the White Sox, which may actually be good for Salazar. He finished the 2015 season with a 3.39 SIERA and an elite strikeout rate of 25.8%. He does tend to walk a lot of batters every now and then, but we are more than willing to deal with that when a pitcher has such a high strikeout rate. He draws a favorable matchup against the White Sox, who had the sixth lowest wOBA against right-handed pitching last season.

I was tempted a time or two, but I’m proud to say that I didn’t roster Danks a single time last season. He just doesn’t fit the mold of the type of pitcher that I am looking to target. In 2015, he posted a 4.63 SIERA, a strikeout rate of 16.2%, and a walk rate of 7.3%. To make matters worse, he is facing an Indians’ offense that had the fifth lowest strikeout rate of any team against right-handed pitching last season. There is more downside than upside here – avoid Danks in all league formats.

The White Sox draw the second worst pitching matchup in the early slate. Jacob deGrom is the clear number one pitching option, but would be second. In his six big league starts, he posted a 4.13 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 19.6%. I say all of this because I want to keep an eye on him moving forward. Lyles had one of the lowest strikeout rates of any starting pitcher in 2015. He finished the season with a 4.70 SIERA and a strikeout rate of only 14.2%. Anytime a pitcher’s K/BB ratio is less than 2.0, that is a major red flag. Perhaps the biggest red flag of all is the fact that he pitches for the Rockies. Coors Field is basically a land mine for a pitcher’s production. The golden rule of daily fantasy baseball is to avoid targeting pitchers in Coors.

This is the game that we have all been waiting for. If you are new to daily fantasy baseball, I’ll let you in on a little secret – you want to target hitters in Coors Field. It yields the highest run production of any stadium in baseball and it’s really not even close. The Padres’ offense has been ice cold to start the season, but they should be able to string some hits together today. struggles with left-handed hitters, but you can really target any of the Padres’ hitters that are in the lineup today.

Colorado
The Rockies have the highest team total on the board today, both in the early-only and the all-day slates. They are playing at home in Coors Field and they draw a favorable matchup against . Hitters from both sides of the plate are in play here and basically anyone that is in the lineup should be on your radar. Load up on the Coors Field game and pair your hitters with Jacob deGrom. It will be a popular strategy in the early slate, but it should be an effective one.

Archer drew a difficult matchup in his season debut. He faced arguably the best offense in baseball in the Blue Jays. While he held his own with 12 strikeouts, he allowed three runs and was only able to last five innings. While his matchup against the Orioles isn’t much better in terms of the potential downside, Archer has more upside. In 2015, the Orioles had the sixth highest strikeout rate against right-handed pitching. For cash game purposes, it makes sense to use Jacob deGrom, but Archer is a great pivot in GPPs.

Tillman was well on his way to a great start in his season debut, striking out five batters in two perfect innings of work. Unfortunately, the rain set in and by the time it cleared, the Orioles had already moved on to the bullpen. While I want to be impressed by his work the other day, I’m not taking the bait. We need to trust the larger sample size, as he posted a 4.69 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 16.2% last season. I like the matchup against the Rays, but Tillman is an underdog pitching in a hitter’s park. Thanks, but no thanks.

The Rays are small favorites tonight against the Orioles in the hitter-friendly Camden Yards. They draw an exploitable matchup against , who has a low strikeout rate and allowed a .309+ wOBA to hitters from both sides of the plate.

Baltimore
The Orioles may end up hitting more home runs than any team in baseball this season, but we should be actively targeting them tonight against . In addition to an elite strikeout rate, Archer held both left and right-handed hitters under a .280 wOBA last season.
