MLB Grind Down: Thursday, September 1st
The RotoGrinders MLB Grind Down will give you an in-depth analysis into the upcoming MLB schedule. This article will break down the numbers for every single game and give you analysis on which trends you can exploit. While matchups are a factor in daily fantasy baseball, there are plenty of other factors to consider such as injuries, weather, and salaries.
The analysis should point you in the right direction, but it is still up to you to decipher the information and make your own selections. No sport has more variance than baseball. The best choice is not always the right choice but following the trends will win you money over time.

We only have four games on the schedule on Thursday, which should shape up to be a quiet day on the DFS front. Cosart has been in slightly better form recently, but he has had a down season overall. In nine starts, he has a 4.88 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 15.3% and a walk rate of 13.8%. He draws a favorable matchup against the Braves, but comes into the game as a sizable underdog on the road. I have him ranked as the second worst pitching option in the slate.

Foltynewicz has been a mediocre pitcher this season, posting a 4.17 SIERA with a strikeout rate just above 20%. The Braves’ starters have had a ton of success in this series and there’s no reason to think that Foltynewicz can’t do the same. On the season, the Padres are ranked 30th in team wOBA and 22nd in team ISO against right-handed pitching. His price is a bit steep on DraftKings, but he is very playable at $7,000 on FanDuel.
Batter Grind Down
San Diego
The Padres have really struggled offensively. In the last month of play, they are ranked dead last in team wOBA. They draw a mediocre matchup against Mike Foltynewicz, but they have to face him in a pitcher-friendly ballpark. This would typically be a good spot to fade the Padres, but there are only four games in the slate, which leaves us with limited option. In the last two seasons, Foltynewicz has allowed a .376 wOBA and 17 home runs to left-handed hitters.

It typically takes a strange situation for the Braves to have one of the highest run projections in the slate. They draw a favorable matchup against Jarred Cosart, who has allowed a .351 wOBA to right-handed hitters in the last two seasons. Cosart has done a nice job of limiting hard contact against left-handed hitters though, so you may want to limit your exposure to the likes of Ender Inciarte, Freddie Freeman, and Nick Markakis.

Urena hasn’t had a lot of success in the majors. In his last 15 starts, he has an ERA well over 5.00 with a strikeout rate close to 13%. He has given up a lot of hard contact this season and he comes into tonight’s game as a large underdog. The Mets have struggled against right-handed pitching this season, but their offense seems to be trending in the right direction. Urena is an easy fade in both cash games and tournaments.

DeGrom is having another stellar season, posting a 3.62 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 23.7% and a walk rate of 5.5%. He draws one of the best matchups on the board and he is easily the highest rated pitcher in the slate. Over the last month of play, the Marlins are ranked 28th in team wOBA. They also have the third lowest team ISO against right-handed pitching this season. DeGrom will be the chalk play tonight and for good reason.

Miami
The Marlins have been awful in the last couple of weeks. They can’t seem to score any runs and they aren’t getting any help from their starting rotation. They come into tonight’s game with the lowest run projection in the entire slate. Even though there are only eight offenses to choose hitters from, I recommend looking elsewhere. DeGrom has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .285 wOBA in the last two seasons.

Samardzija gets to face his former team tonight in Chicago. He is having a mediocre season thus far, posting a 4.35 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 18.3%. He comes into the game as a large underdog and the Cubs have the highest run projection in the slate. Chicago is currently ranked fifth in team wOBA against right-handed pitching and second in team wOBA over the last month of play. There is more risk than potential reward here.

Montgomery was one of my favorite value plays in yesterday’s slate, but the Cubs decided to flip his start with Jason Hammel. The main concern with Montgomery before his last start was a potential pitch count, but he threw 91 pitches in five innings against the Dodgers. His matchup against the Giants is a decent one, as they are ranked 19th in team wOBA and 25th in team ISO against left-handed pitching this season. Jacob deGrom is locked and loaded as the top SP1 in this slate, but Montgomery is a viable SP2 on multi-pitcher sites.

San Francisco
The Giants have not fared well against left-handed pitching this season and they come into tonight’s game with the second lowest run projection in the slate. While they see a favorable ballpark shift playing in Wrigley Field, Montgomery has held both left and right-handed hitters to a .312 wOBA in the last two seasons.

Chicago Cubs
The Cubs have the highest implied team total in the slate tonight. Granted, they don’t have a lot of competition. They draw a favorable matchup against Jeff Samardzija, who has allowed a .348 wOBA to left-handed hitters in the last two seasons. During that stretch, Samardzija has also given up 51 home runs.

Quintana is one of the best pitchers in baseball that people outside of DFS don’t really know about. In 26 starts this season, he has a 2.77 ERA (3.96 SIERA) with a strikeout rate of 21.9%. He has good command and historically, he has limited the hard contact against him. I’m not a huge fan of his matchup tonight against the Twins, who are ranked tenth in team wOBA and seventh in team ISO against left-handed pitching this season. It’s worth it to pay up for Jacob deGrom.

Santana comes into tonight’s game in solid form, posting a 3.73 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.8% in the last month of play. He draws a favorable matchup against the White Sox, who are ranked 24th in both team wOBA and team ISO against right-handed pitching this season. He may be a small underdog at home, but he makes an intriguing GPP play. We have seen this White Sox offense disappear on a number of occasions this season.
Batter Grind Down
Chicago White Sox
The White Sox come into tonight’s game with the fourth highest run projection in the slate. They draw a mediocre matchup against Ervin Santana, who has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .310 wOBA in the last two seasons. Santana isn’t nearly as favorable of a matchup as the common perception. I’d actually rather target the Twins’ offense.

Minnesota
The Twins may have the third lowest run projection in the slate, but they are a top ten offense against left-handed pitching. Their lineup will likely consist of seven or eight right-handed hitters, which bodes well for their matchup against Jose Quintana. In the last two seasons, Quintana has allowed 25 home runs to batters from the right side of the plate.
