Conley has pitched well in his first 12 major league starts, posting a 4.04 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 21.2%. He has walked a few too many hitters though, and he draws a fairly tough matchup against the Mets today. He is listed as a small underdog in a game that features a total of 8.0 runs. I suppose if you are playing the early only slate (three games) and want to pivot off of you could look his way, but he’s not really on my radar today.

Verrett pitched well as a spot starter for the Mets last season, posting a 3.90 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 20.5%. It’s worth pointing out that he only has two major league starts where he has thrown at least 75 pitches. He is expected to head back to the bullpen soon and we shouldn’t expect him to come out and throw 90 pitches. He will likely be on a pitch count, which really limits his upside. I’m a fan of his matchup against the Marlins, but the risk outweighs the potential reward.

Miami
The Marlins had a difficult time with last night and their struggles against right-handed pitching are well documented. In 2015, Miami had the third lowest team wOBA against righties. They have the second lowest team total of the six teams playing in the early slate. While I don’t love the spot as a whole for the Mets, (power) and (speed) are both in play at their respective positions.

The Mets are small favorites today against , who is still largely unproven at the major league level. Conley has had reverse splits in his short stint in the majors, but I’ll chalk that up to sample size. If you are targeting any hitters in the Mets’ lineup, I prefer the ones that can hit from the right side of the plate.

Shoemaker has flashed some upside in the majors, but he has struggled with consistency. Overall, his numbers don’t look terrible. Since the start of last season, he has a 4.06 SIERA with a strikeout rate over 20%. He actually draws a pretty decent matchup against the A’s, who have struggled against right-handed pitching over the last two seasons. Again, is the clear cash game target in the early slate, but Shoemaker makes an interesting pivot in tournaments.

Surkamp is my least favorite pitching option in the three early games. It’s not that he can’t pitch well, he just doesn’t have the strikeout upside that I am looking for from a starting pitcher. This game is basically set as a pick ‘em with a total of 8.5 runs. The Angels don’t have much in terms of offensive talent, but I’m not sure that will translate into a strong outing for Surkamp. I’m giving the edge to the Angels’ bats in this one.

The A’s have the highest team total of the six teams in the early slate. They draw a nice matchup against , who has not been able to consistently get hitters out on a nightly basis. Griffin may have lasted six innings in his first start of the season, but he only recorded one strikeout while giving up three runs. He is listed as a sizable underdog today against the Mariners. While they didn’t have the best numbers against right-handed pitching as a team last season, they have seven hitters that have at least a .320 wOBA against righties over the last two seasons. Griffin is an easy pitcher to avoid in all league formats.

Walker is the top target in the early slate of games, but if you are playing the all-day slate, I would consider him more of a GPP play. He really improved his command last season, which helped cut down on his walks. He has always had great stuff, but he struggles to keep the ball in the park. Since the start of last season, he has given up 26 home runs. I’m not expecting a blemish-free start from Walker, but he should pitch well at home against the Rangers.

As mentioned above, the biggest weakness in game is giving up the long ball. He has given up 13 home runs to left-handed hitters and 13 home runs to right-handed hitters since the start of last season. Outside of the rookie , I’m not crazy about any of the Rangers for cash games. However, anyone with decent power in this lineup is worth a look in tournaments.

In his first start of the season, I mentioned that if you had never played daily fantasy baseball, you should consider yourself lucky, because that means that you hadn’t been burned by Strasburg. He got off to shaky start against the Braves, but he eventually rallied and picked up the win. He gets to face them again tonight, only this time at home. If you look at Strasburg’s home/road splits, they are glaring. He should be considered the top pitching target tonight for cash games. The combination of safety and upside is too good to pass up.

Greene is not a pitcher that is going to be used very often in daily fantasy baseball. In 2015, he posted a 4.82 SIERA with a well below-average strikeout rate of 13.3%. Once again, anytime a pitcher has a K:BB ratio less than 2.0, that is a major red flag. Greene should be avoided tonight on the road.

I was quite surprised when the line for this game was set. The Pirates were originally listed as -170 favorites with the total set at 7.5 runs. It didn’t take long for the line to move though, and now it looks like a more accurate representation of how this game should pan out. I’m expecting a decent season from Vogelsong, but he draws a bad matchup against the Tigers and he doesn’t have a lot of strikeout potential.
Batter Grind Down
Detroit
This is an interesting matchup for Detroit. On the one hand, we like targeting hitters against . On the other hand, the Tigers don’t really have any left-handed hitters to take advantage of the fact that Vogelsong has allowed a .381 wOBA to hitters from that side of the plate. is not expected to be in the lineup, as there will not be a DH in this game. I like the right-handed bats as tournament plays, but no one stands out as a must start.

Pittsburgh
The Pirates have the eighth highest team total of the 24 teams in the main slate tonight. They draw a favorable matchup against , who has allowed a .423 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .324 wOBA to right-handed hitters. If the price is right, I don’t mind using the Pirates’ bats in cash games or tournaments.
