The Avalanche moved some pieces prior to yesterday’s trade deadline (mainly Jarome Iginla), but it wasn’t quite the firesale that many were expecting. They’ll take the ice tonight in Ottawa as easily the worst team in the NHL with a 17-41-3 record and have averaged a laughable 1.98 goals against per game this season. While they do have several guys worth fliers in GPP’s (Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan Mackinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Matt Duchene up-front with Tyson Barrie and Erik Johnson on the blue-line), they’re a pretty easy fade in cash games this evening on such a large slate. Rantanen tends to be almost completely overlooked and has scored eight goals and added four assists over in his last 16 games, giving him considerable GPP appeal.

Ottawa was embarrassed after their 5-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Monday, but will finally head home after a four-game road trip and are pleased to still be sitting in second place in the Atlantic Division. While Colorado has not been quiet as terrible down the stretch as they were early in the season, this is still one of the best matchups on the board as they’ve allowed a league worst 3.31 goals against per game this season and sport an ugly 77.9% penalty kill. Ottawa’s offensive attack actually starts on their blue-line with Erik Karlsson. He leads the team with 55 points in 61 games and, as I’ve stated in these Grind Down’s previously, also leads the entire NHL in blocked shots. Karlsson scored two goals and added 12 assists in 13 games during the month of February and a strong case could be made that he’s potentially the number one overall option on defense tonight (and yes, Brent Burns is playing). Up-front, the Bobby Ryan injury has finally forced Guy Boucher to place his top offensive weapons on his top two forward lines (as opposed to three lines). Mike Hoffman and Kyle Turris form one of the quickest duos in the NHL and are now slated to be joined by the newly acquired Alexandre Burrows on the top forward line. Burrows has been a non-factor in recent seasons for Vancouver, but does have a 35-goal season on his resume could be sparked by this change of scenery. Meanwhile, Zack Smith, Derick Brassard and Mark Stone provide some consistent secondary scoring.

With four straight wins under their belt, Nashville has pushed themselves safely into the Western Conference playoff mix. They’re offense is rolling right now but they will face a stiff test tonight as they invade the Bell Centre to battle Carey Price and the Canadiens. If you’ve been sleeping under a rock, you may not realize that Filip Forsberg is wielding as hot of a stick right now as anyone in the NHL. The 22 year-old has scored at least one goal in each of the last five games and owns ten goals and three assists during that stretch. He thriving alongside Ryan Johansen and Viktor Arvidsson on the top forward line and number one power-play unit and they’re simply a tough tournament fade tonight despite the perceived tough matchup. Behind them are several serviceable “plug” option like James Neal, Mike Fisher, and Colin Wilson but the Forsberg line should command the most attention up-front. On defense, both Roman Josi and P.K. Subban are known commodities. The biggest story of this game is Subban’s return to Montreal and his flare for the dramatic makes him a guy I want to target. If you can’t afford either of those two, Ryan Ellis can be found at a much cheaper price point and does see plenty of work with the second power-play unit. He scored two goals and three assists in his last six games and the Canadiens’ mediocre 80.4% penalty kill shouldn’t scare you away.

Montreal was very active at the trade deadline, but it’s tough to get too excited about any of their moves in particular. They struggled a bit through the middle of the season, but did pick up an important 1-0 victory against Columbus on Tuesday and have now won three straight games. They have posted an impressive 19-9-4 record at the Bell Centre this season and should be eager to Nashville’s struggles on the road (13-15-2 road record). After a very mediocre start to the season, Max Pacioretty has come alive lately and looks poised to carry this team offensively. He racked up seven goals and seven assists in 13 games during the month of January and scored a goal the only other time he’s faced Nashville this season. He’ll be joined on the top forward line by Phillip Danault and Alexander Radulov, which is an obvious boost to both of their fantasy outlooks. Radulov dished out a pair of assists in that first meeting and flashed his offensive upside with a four-point night earlier this week against New Jersey. After a career best 56 point season last year, Alex Galchenyuk has regressed just a bit lately. However, the former third overall draft pick looks to be heating up just at the right time. He’s now scored goals in three straight games and has the luxury of centering the number one power-play unit. On defense, Shea Weber is the top option, but Andrei Markov, Jeff Petry and Nathan Beaulieu also see a healthy dose of playing time on the point of the power-play and can be found at a fraction of the price on many sites.

The Islanders were absolutely embarrassed by a 7-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets over the weekend. However, that loss aside, Doug Weight actually has this team playing pretty well down the stretch. They’ve posted a 13-5-2 record over their last 20 games and have somehow pulled their way within striking distance of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Both of these teams play at a very quick tempo, and with the Dallas Stars owning a historically terrible 73.4% penalty kill, I will be targeting New York tonight despite their road struggles (9-14-4 road record). As you’d expect, John Tavares leads the charge offensively and has posted 52 points in 61 games. He scored a pair of goals against the Stars in their only previous meeting this season and is the headliner of both the top forward line and #1 power-play unit. Joining Tavares on both of those lines are the duo of Anders Lee and Josh Bailey, and that makes them both fine options as well. Those two have thrived alongside Tavares since being grouped together and just combined for 10 goals and 13 assists in 13 games during the month of February. Alternatively, Ryan Strome doesn’t garner nearly as much attention, but he also sees plenty of run on that top power-play unit and has been solid down the stretch with five goals and six assists in his last 14 games. On defense, that Dallas penalty-kill vaults both Nick Leddy and Johnny Boychuk up my rankings tonight. Both players are very reasonably priced can be targeted in all formats tonight considering the matchup.

Dallas did surprise many with a 3-2 win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, but barring a miracle, they know they’ll be missing out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs once again. Their defense (and penalty kill) has let them down all season and they’ve now surrendered an ugly 3.21 goals against per game this season. Their front office waived the proverbial white flag before the trade deadline by shipping off Patrick Eaves, but this team does still possess plenty of offensive firepower. With the Islanders likely perfectly willing to partake in a back-and-forth hockey game, I expect both sides of this game to skate into plenty of scoring opportunities. Be sure to monitor the morning skate, but Lindy Ruff’s line combinations have not been the most fantasy friendly over the past few weeks, so rather than deal with that mess, I’ll be focusing on the Dallas power-play as New York owns a subpar 80.1% penalty kill. Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn are far-and-away the most dangerous offensive weapons to target. They join forces on the top power-play unit and have both been putting up solid numbers down the stretch. Benn has picked up points in four straight games and has posted 11 goals and 12 assists in his last 18 games. Meanwhile, Seguin has scored a pair of goals and dished out eight assists in his last seven games. With Eaves out of the picture, value opens up all over the place with options like Jiri Hudler, Patrick Sharp, Brett Ritchie and Devin Shore all seeing some playing time on the power-play. John Klingberg remains the player to target from the Dallas blue-line. He’s picked up two goals and three assists in the last three games and is locked into all the work he can handle. Rookie Esa Lindell has seen his workload increase throughout the season and has now earned some playing time on the man-advantage, making him punt play if you’re desperate for salary relief.

The Maple Leafs were busy at the trade deadline, but none of the moves were overly significant. They currently find themselves just one point ahead of the Florida Panthers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and Mike Babcock knows his young team will need to play very well down the stretch to extend their season. This looks to be an interesting battle between a Toronto team that loves to push the pace and a Los Angeles squad that controls the puck about as well as anyone in the NHL (55.11 CF%). While Toronto is certainly capable of an offensive explosion every time they take the ice, I’m not expect Los Angeles to give them too many opportunities. Auston Matthews leads the charge with 55 points and 220 SOG this season and his high-event nature solidifies him as a fine play in all formats on a nightly basis. He’s slated to be joined by William Nylander and Zach Hyman on the top line, but those three will also draw plenty of attention from last season’s Selke winner, Anze Kopitar. Alternatively, Mitchell Marner is finally back to full speed and joins James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak on a very dangerous “secondary” scoring line. Marner’s home versus road splits are a small concern in this matchup, but all three forwards have to be on your GPP radar at the very least. On defense, Nikita Zaitsev and Jake Gardiner continue to see the lion’s share of the work with the Toronto power-play and are therefore the two top targets.

With their playoff hopes dwindling with every loss, the Los Angeles Kings made a big move to bring in veteran Jarome Iginla at the trade deadline (and Ben Bishop to stabilize their goaltending situation). They’ll enter tonight’s game having dropped each of their last two contests and Darryl Sutter knows his team has very little margin for error at this point. Iginla should immediately slot alongside Anze Kopitar on the top forward line and that should be mutually beneficial for both players. Adrian Kempe looks to be the “third-wheel” on that line and that makes the former first-round pick a fine value option if you’re really in need of some cost savings. Meanwhile, Jeff Carter is still the focal point of this offense and the “That 70’s Line” is proving to once again be very threatening in the offensive end. Carter leads the way with 30 goals and 26 assists in 63 games and his 198 shots on goal makes him the most consistent fantasy producer of the bunch. With that said, Pearson has been absolutely rolling lately and has now posted six goals and seven assists over his last nine games. On defense, Drew Doughty is the most well known name, but both Jake Muzzin and Alec Martinez have proven themselves as fantasy relevant as well. Doughty and Muzzin shares the duties on the point of the number one power-play unit and are therefore my favorite two to target here this evening.

It’s a ten game slate and I simply have little to no interest targeting this Vancouver team in any formats this evening. They moved several offensive pieces prior to the deadline, are only averaging 2.23 goals per game on the road this season, and Martin Jones has posted a 15-7-4 record to go along with a 2.12 GAA at the GP Pavilion. Throw in the fact that San Jose has easily won both prior meetings between these two teams this season and it’s a pretty easy fade on a ten-game slate. Sure the Sedin brothers are still capable of offensive fireworks from time to time, but being shadowed by Logan Couture all over the ice is simply not the time to target them.

With a five point lead and two games in hand on the Edmonton Oilers, the Sharks are starting to tighten their stranglehold on the Pacific Division. They picked up an important 3-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leads on Tuesday night and just rolled to an easy win against this Vancouver team over the weekend. With Vancouver selling off several of their remaining assets prior to yesterday’s trade deadline, San Jose figures to have a significant advantage in this matchup. They own an impressive 19-7-4 record at the Shark Tank this season and Vancouver has been an absolute train wreck away from Rogers Arena (8-19-3 road record). If you’re targeting San Jose, things have to start with Brent Burns. Burns is having one of the most dominant offensive seasons the NHL has ever seen from a defenseman and he’ll enter tonight’s game leading the entire NHL with 245 SOG and sitting tied for third place in scoring with 66 points. He’s scored a goal and added two assists in two games against the Canucks this season and is the elite option on the blue-line, as usual, tonight. If you can’t find a way to squeeze him into your lineup and still want some exposure to the Sharks defense, then both Marc-Edouard Vlasic and David Schlemko are fine value options as they both see a healthy dose of playing time on the point of the second power-play unit and their abilities to rack up the peripheral stats gives them a nice floor for cash games. Up-front, it’s the top two forward lines that require your attention. Joe Pavelski scored a goal and picked up an assist on Tuesday and has now racked up an impressive 32 points in 30 games at the HP Pavilion. He’ll headline the top forward line where he’ll be joined by Kevin Labanc and Joe Thornton. This leaves Logan Couture as the focal point of the second line with Mikkel Boedker and Patrick Marleau on his wings. Meanwhile, Tomas Hertl has scored goals in back-to-back games, tallied 25 goals last season and sees plenty of playing time with the second power-play unit.
