It was a bit surprising to see the Arizona Coyotes hold on to Radim Vrbata yesterday, and frankly, he’s probably a bit surprised to still be here. With that said, the Coyotes were already pretty bad and are now without both Martin Hanzal and Ryan White who were traded to the Minnesota Wild. An unrestricted free-agent at season’s end, Vrbata leads the Coyotes with 47 points in 62 games and should at least be motivated to help any offseason contract negotiations by having a strong finish to the season. He’s now slated to be joined by Max Domi and Peter Holland on the top forward line, which is definitely a downgrade from playing alongside Hanzal all season. Vrbata and Domi both scored a goal and added an assist when they faced this Buffalo team earlier this season and look like the two I’d be willing to target in GPPs this evening. On defense, Oliver Ekman-Larsson has now been held off the score sheet in each of the last five games, but he’s still easily the top target on the Arizona blue-line. Baring a major set-back, he’ll post his fourth consecutive 40+ point season and is one of the key players that Arizona should be building around.

Buffalo seemed ready to flirt with the possibility of climbing into the playoff race in the Eastern Conference, but after a four game losing streak, their hopes seem pretty dim all of a sudden. With that said, they’re finally nearing full health offensively and have a terrific home matchup on tap tonight as the Arizona Coyotes invade the KeyBank Center in Buffalo. Jack Eichel scored a goal and added an assist in the first game between these two teams and is now averaging nearly four shots on goal per game and racked up two goals and 14 assists in 14 games during the month of February, solidifying him as a top-tier option at the center position tonight. His even strength linemates leave a bit to be desired (Brian Gionta and Marcus Foligno), he does have the luxury of joining Sam Reinhart, Ryan O’Reilly and Kyle Okposo on the number one power-play unit. With Arizona sporting an ugly 77.8% penalty kill, all four forwards see a significant fantasy boost. O’Reilly and Okposo have developed a very nice rapport together on the top forward line (along with Matt Moulson) and Arizona doesn’t really have anyone who can matchup well against them defensively. Rasmus Ristolainen is still the main target on the blue-line and facilitates things from the point of the top power-play unit. He’s able to rack up fantasy points in all categories and that makes him a very nice option in all formats.

There are a few lopsided matchups on the board tonight and this is certainly one of them. The New Jersey Devils will head to the Verizon Center having dropped four straight games. Since New Year’s day, they own an ugly 46.11 CF% and have been paying at one of the slowest paces in the entire league (102.88 CP60 during that span). Washington has steam rolled them in each of their last two meetings and the Capitals own also allowed an NHL low 2.08 goals against per game this season. Taylor Hall is always worth a GPP flier (and perhaps his linemates Travis Zajac and Kyle Palmieri), but that’s the extent of my interest. Moving on…..

The Capitals enter tonight’s game with an NHL best 91 points and after solidifying their blue-line with the trade deadline acquisition of Kevin Shattenkirk. If that wasn’t enough, they also own an 25-5-1 home record and are fresh off of a 4-1 beatdown over the rival New York Rangers on Tuesday night. New Jersey will do their best to slow this game down as much as possible, but they’re simply overmatched and Washington “should” continue their dominant play once again tonight. Alex Ovechkin has been eerily quiet lately, but he’ll still draw plenty of attention this evening. He’s scored two goals and added two assists in the three prior meetings with New Jersey this season and his sizable shot volume gives me the high-floor everyone is looking for in cash games. With T.J. Oshie once again expected to be watching from the press-box, Tom Wilson stands to be the biggest beneficiary as he’s slated to join Ovie and Nicklas Backstrom on the top forward line. He’s clearly not the most talented offensive weapon, but that opportunity (and price-tag) is tough to ignore. Alternatively, Evgeny Kuznetsov continues to roll as he picked up five goals and six assists in 12 games during the month of February and is looking more and more comfortable playing alongside Marcus Johansson and Justin Williams on the second forward line. On defense, Kevin Shattenkirk looks to have immediately grabbed the reigns as the point man on the Capitals lethal number one power-play unit and it’s difficult to view that as anything but an upgrade to his fantasy potential. While that news is a bit of a buzz-kill to both John Carlson and Matt Niskanen, they will both still run the show from the point of the second power-play unit and have more than enough offensive upside to be targeted in all formats tonight.

The Rangers will head to Beantown having dropped two straight game and weren’t as active at the trade deadline as many expected (though they did bring in Brendan Smith to help stabilize their blue-line). They sit in fourth place of the very competitive Metropolitan Division but are currently safely holding one of the eight Eastern Conference playoff berths. They’ve won each of the first two meetings against the Bruins by a 5-2 score and will likely be eager to try and snap the Bruins three-game winning streak and keep them on the playoff bubble as long as possible. Offensively, the Rangers are one of the most balanced scoring teams in the NHL and that’s been a constant headache for fantasy players as each of Alain Vigneault’s top three lines can erupt on any given night. One of these three lines will likely be seeing a very heavy dose of the pesky defense from Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and David Backes, but it’s not 100% clear who they’ll be shadowing just yet (they split time pretty evenly against each of the top two lines in their last meeting). Sprinkle in the fact that Boston owns the second best penalty kill in the NHL this season (85.7%) and it’s pretty tough to get too excited about the Rangers forwards in cash games. With that said, they’re all very much in play in GPPs and it’s worth noting that Derek Stepan has scored a goal and added four assist in those first two meetings. On defense, Ryan McDonagh will naturally draw the most attention. He’s averaging over 24 minutes of ice-time per game this season and quarterback’s the top power-play unit. If you’re looking for some salary relief, Brady Skjei continues to see a heavy workload as well and it’s unlikely Brendan Smith presence will significantly impact the former first-round picks playing time. Skjei scored his third goal of the season on Tuesday and now owns 30 points in 62 games played in his rookie season.

The Bruins enter action tonight tied with Ottawa for second place in the Atlantic Division and have won each of their last three games. As mentioned above, they have struggled against this Rangers hockey club this season, but both of those meetings were much earlier in the season and Boston is now playing its best hockey of the season (7-1-0 record in their last eight games). Boston did add some forward depth at the trade deadline in Drew Stafford, but Bruce Cassidy still primary leans on each of his top two scoring lines to carry the load offensively. The trio of Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and David Backes have been on fire down the stretch and are the main reasons for Boston’s recent success. Marchand and Bergeron combined for a ridiculous 11 goals and 19 assists in ten games during the month of February and make significant contributions on both ends of the ice. Meanwhile, David Krejci centers David Pastrnak and rookie Peter Cehlarik on a second line that continues to offer plenty of secondary scoring. Pastrnak has picked up points in each of the last three games and owns 14 goals and 12 assists in just 25 games at the TD Garden. Torey Krug has established himself as the top option on the Boston blue-line. He runs the show from the point of the top power-play unit and has scored a goal and added nine assists in his last nine games.

Florida snapped a three game losing streak with a key 3-2 shootout victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night and badly need to get rolling very soon if they plan on being part of the Eastern Conference playoff field. They made a pretty big splash at yesterday’s trade deadline by picking up Thomas Vanek from Detroit and now, finally at full health, have three very dangerous forward lines to contend with. Both Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov have carried the offensive load lately; combining for 11 goals and 11 assists in 11 games during the month of February. Jaromir Jagr is clearly not the same weapon he once was, but does join those two on the top line and did score his 12th goal of the season in their last game. Alternatively, Vincent Trocheck has been healthy all season and therefore leads the team with 43 points in 62 games. He centers the team’s second power-play unit where he’ll be joined up front by the newly acquired Thomas Vanek, Reilly Smith and Jussi Jokinen. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs and Dallas Stars have played at a quicker pace than the Philadelphia Flyers since the All-Star break (118.61 CP60), which should mean some extra scoring chances to go around. On defense, it’s Keith Yandle and Aaron Ekblad that require your attention. Both players absorb the lion’s share of the playing time on the point of the power-play and offer plenty of offensive upside.

The Flyers ten-game winning streak from earlier this season is a distant memory, and they’ve now posted just a 10-16-4 record over their last 30 games. They did pick up an very important 4-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night and have to be viewing tonight’s game as a “must-win” as they’ll head out on a tough four game road trip on Saturday. While facing the Panthers is not an ideal matchup by any means, I did mention that Philadelphia has been pushing the pace lately and they’re at least pretty straight forward when trying to predict where there scoring will come from on a nightly basis. Brayden Schenn, Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds form one of the most dangerous trios in the league and flexed their offensive muscles with three first period goals against the Colorado Avalanche. Meanwhile Jakub Voracek actually leads the team in scoring and has thrived at the Wells Fargo Center where he’s posted 13 goals and 20 assists in 32 home games. He’s now slated to be joined by the newly acquired Valtteri Filppula on the second line, which figures to be beneficial to both players. On defense, the Flyers shipped Mark Streit to the Tampa Bay Lightning (who then sent him to Pittsburgh) before yesterday’s trade deadline and that now means Ivan Provorov and Shayne Gostisbehere are locked into as big of a workload as they can handle. Gostisbehere has picked up a goal and four assists in the last four games and remains well under-priced on several sites.

After acquiring Martin Hanzal from the Arizona Coyotes, the Minnesota Wild have solidified themselves as one of the front-runners to represent the Western Conference in the Stanley Cup Finals. Hanzal’s signing was welcomed news by most in the Twin Cities, but it happened to come right as the Wild learned of Zach Parise and Jason Pominville diagnosis of mumps. As you’d expect, both forwards will be out action once again tonight but Bruce Boudreau’s team is luckily loaded with forward depth that will help soften the blow a bit. Even without those two stars, each of the top three forward lines is in play on a nightly basis. Mikael Granlund has really elevated his game this season and is thriving alongside countrymate Mikko Koivu (and Jason Zucker) on the top forward line and second power-play unit. He scored at least one goal in each of the last four games and now leads Minnesota with 59 points in 61 games. With the Erik Haula, Martin Hanzal and Charlie Coyle line likely asked to try and slow down Cam Atkinson, Granlund and Koivu are my preferred options. With that said, Nino Niederreiter, Eric Staal and Ryan White are certainly capable offensively and are worth GPP consideration as well. On defense, their impressive depth is on full display as well. Ryan Suter took a nasty spill in their last game, so monitor his status after the morning skate. If he’s unable to suit up, Jared Spurgeon, Jonas Brodin, Mathew Dumba and Marco Scandella all emerge as fine options.

Columbus dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision in Montreal on Tuesday night, but their front office still has to be very pleased with their hockey club this season. Tonight, they’ll return home to Nationwide Arena where they own an impressive 22-9-1 home record this season. They did defeat this Minnesota team when they collided earlier this season, but it’s still tough to get too excited about this matchup in general as the Wild have allowed just 2.38 goals against per game this season and Devan Dubnyk has emerged as one of the best goaltenders in the league. With that said, both of Columbus’ top two scoring lines have proven themselves to be worth GPP consideration (at least) all season long and things shouldn’t be any different tonight. Cam Atkinson scored a pair of goals against Minnesota in that first meeting and leads the team with 53 points and 185 SOG in 61 games. He’s expected to skate alongside Boone Jenner and Brandon Dubinsky at even strength and all three players should benefit to some degree with Zach Parise sidelined with the mumps. Alternatively, Alexander Wennberg has racked up six points in the last three games and now trails just one point behind Atkinson. He’ll skate with Nick Foligno and Oliver Bjorkstrand at full strength and also center the teams number one power-play unit. On defense, it’s a two-headed attack for Columbus as both Seth Jones and Zach Werenski soak up all of the available playing time with the man advantage. Both blue-liners have flashed impressive offensive upside and figure to be widely overlooked considering the matchup, making them very intriguing GPP plays.
