The first game of the night kicks off with two pitchers that are slightly past their prime. In 11 starts this season, Pelfrey has a 5.16 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 12%. He doesn’t generate a lot of swings and misses and he gives up a hard hit contact rate over 30%. He draws a difficult matchup tonight against the Yankees, who have scored 29 runs in their last four games at home. I know we want to get Coors Field batters into our lineup, but that doesn’t mean that we have to take Pelfrey.

Sabathia has pitched out of some jams in his last couple of starts. While I always like to see him pitch well, I don’t expect it to last. He is an aging pitcher that has lost velocity and command. That is not a great combination for a pitcher. He draws a very difficult matchup tonight against the Tigers. Sabathia’s biggest weakness has been against right-handed hitters and the Tigers will likely throw nine of them at him tonight.
Batter Grind Down
Detroit
The Tigers are ranked ninth in team wOBA against left-handed pitching this season, but when all is said and done, I expect them to be ranked inside the top five. Their matchup against couldn’t be any better for their lineup construction. Over the last two seasons, Sabathia has allowed a .347 wOBA and 26 home runs to right-handed hitters.

The Yankees come into tonight’s game with the fourth highest implied run projection on the board. Their offense should be riding high, after scoring 29 runs against the Angels in their last four games. They have a great chance to keep it rolling tonight against , who has allowed a .372 wOBA to left-handed hitters and a .329 wOBA to right-handed hitters over the last two seasons.

Hellickson has been underrated in the early part of the season. He is off to a great start, posting a 3.56 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24.4% and a walk rate of only 6%. Unfortunately, he plays for the Phillies and is almost always listed as an underdog. He checks into tonight’s game as the largest underdog on the board. He draws a difficult matchup against the Nationals and run support will likely be limited with pitching opposite him.

When I first looked at the pitcher ratings that my model spits our for me each day, I had to do a double take – Kershaw wasn’t ranked #1. I then saw that Strasburg beat him out by .1 percentage point in terms of their overall rating tonight. The way Kershaw is pitching right now, it’s hard to argue against him. However, Strasburg is pitching at home and he draws the better matchup of the two. On the season, the Phillies are ranked 28th in team wOBA and 18th in team K% against right-handed pitching. Strasburg should dominate tonight and pick up an easy win.

The Phillies have struggled offensively all season, averaging the second fewest runs scored per game. This one is pretty simple – don’t target bad offenses against elite pitchers.

The Nationals have the 12th highest team total on the board tonight, as they square off against at home. Since Hellickson has looked like a different pitcher this season, I am placing more of an emphasis on his recent splits. His swinging strike rate and ground ball rate are both down from where they were a year ago. Cole has a low ERA this season, but eventually those balls put into play are going to start finding holes and gaps. His strikeout rate is down 6% from where is was last season and he is generating a very mediocre swinging strike rate of 18.6%. While he is pitching at home tonight, he draws a tough matchup against the Cardinals, who are ranked second in team wOBA and first in team ISO against right-handed pitching. I will be avoiding Cole in all league formats.

Gausman has some nice numbers so far this season. In nine starts, he has a 3.72 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 22.3%. While there are certainly spots when we can use him in DFS, this is not one of them. Not only does he have to face the Blue Jays in the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre, but the splits don’t line up well for him in this matchup. He is a reverse-splits pitcher and the Blue Jays best hitters bat from the right side of the plate.

Estrada has been the Blue Jays best pitcher so far this season. In 11 starts, he has a 2.41 ERA with a strikeout rate of 21.5%. While those numbers are certainly impressive, it’s hard to imagine him keeping a .191 BABIP for the rest of the season. Estrada generally has a lower BABIP than the major league average, but his career average is .255. He is an extreme fly-ball pitcher that could struggle against a powerful Orioles’ lineup.

Baltimore
The Orioles may not have the best matchup on the board, but if we have learned anything from Baltimore, it’s that they always make a great stack in tournaments. They are facing an extreme fly-ball pitcher in a hitter-friendly ballpark. That alone makes them worthy of GPP consideration. I will be avoiding the Orioles in cash games though, as has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .270 wOBA.

The Blue Jays come into tonight’s game with the sixth highest run projection. Their matchup against looks like it favors the Blue Jays when you look at his splits. Over the last two seasons, Gausman has allowed a .360 wOBA and 20 home runs to right-handed hitters. The best part is that with a game in Coors Field tonight, Toronto’s offense will be lower owned that it otherwise would be. left last night’s game early with hamstring tightness. Make sure he is in the lineup if you are considering him tonight.

McCullers has incredible upside, but he is a wild pitcher that really struggles with his command. On the season, he has a 3.96 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 29.4% and a walk rate of 15.1%. Basically, you are getting the good and the bad when you roster McCullers. He is not a great cash game target (especially at his price) and I’m not sure that you need to look at him in tournaments either. While the upside is there, I find myself leaning toward other pitching options.

Andriese has been a serviceable starter for the Rays this season, posting a 4.23 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 16.2%. While we do need to save some salary cap somewhere if we are planning on using an ace with some Coors Field hitters, Andriese seems a bit overpriced on DraftKings. The Astros may strikeout at a high rate, but they are ranked above the major league average in both team wOBA and team ISO against right-handed pitching this season.

Houston
The Astros are an offense that most people will just gloss over tonight. I will likely be doing the same. They draw a mediocre matchup against in the pitcher-friendly Tropicana Field. Over the last two seasons, Andriese has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .305 wOBA. While I don’t hate the Astros, they seem a bit overpriced in this matchup.

The Rays are small underdogs tonight at home against . While he does struggle with his command at times, he has an elite strikeout rate. The one potential weakness for McCullers is right-handed hitters – allowing a .321 wOBA and eight home runs to righties in his last 27 starts.
